To keep water from freezing in a cold Minecraft biome, block its direct exposure to the sky with a solid block. For a farm that also needs light, put a block one air space above the water and place a torch or another bright block on top.

Keep water from freezing with an overhead block

Place a solid block directly above the water so the water is no longer exposed to the sky. Minecraft Wiki’s Tutorial:Crop farming says that covering water with a solid block guards it against freezing in cold biomes. This is the clearest practical method in the available guidance.

  1. Check that the water is in a cold or snowy biome.
  2. Place a solid block above the water to obstruct its direct sky exposure.
  3. If the water still freezes, check that the cover blocks the sky at the water’s location.

Add light for crops without covering the water directly

If crops need light, the same tutorial describes placing a block one air space above the water, then putting a torch, jack o’lantern, or glowstone on top of that block. This arrangement combines an overhead cover with a light source. Follow the tutorial’s layout rather than assuming a light source by itself will prevent freezing.

Why exact light rules depend on edition and version

Do not rely on a universal light-level threshold to keep water from freezing. Minecraft Wiki’s water summary discusses sky exposure and light, but the available evidence does not establish a current threshold that applies across Java and Bedrock. It also notes differences in water-light behavior between editions. Mojang’s Java snapshot notes document a historical change to how water blocks light, so exact light calculations need to be checked against the player’s edition and version.

Do not mistake naturally frozen terrain for a prevention guide

Frozen rivers and oceans are generated terrain variants associated with snowy settings; they do not explain how to keep a player-built water source from freezing. Minecraft Help’s biome list and Microsoft Learn’s frozen-ocean creator reference describe biome generation, not a player-built water protection method.

What to check if the water still freezes

  • Confirm that the location is in a cold or snowy biome.
  • Check that the overhead block actually interrupts the water’s direct exposure to the sky.
  • Do not treat an old bug report as the current rule: Mojang’s legacy MCPE-75719 records a Bedrock freezing issue affecting version 1.14.60 that was fixed in 1.16.0.61 Beta. Its quoted description reflects older wiki-derived conditions, not definitive current mechanics.

The directly relevant construction guidance comes from a Minecraft Wiki tutorial, not current official documentation of freezing mechanics. The available sources do not establish a complete, current Java-versus-Bedrock comparison. If the cover method does not work in your world, check guidance for your specific edition and version rather than relying on an assumed light threshold.
