To stop marketplace product photos from appearing sideways, read the image’s EXIF orientation, apply its rotation or mirroring exactly once, and create thumbnails and marketplace versions from the corrected image. Then validate each output against the current requirements for its marketplace, country, and image slot. A single universal preset is not reliable: platform guidance differs, and even Walmart Canada’s cited pages list different limits.
Why are my uploaded product photos sideways?
A photo’s pixel data and its intended display orientation are not always the same thing. Apple explains that an iOS camera can encode pixel data in the sensor’s native landscape orientation while metadata indicates how the camera was held; UIKit uses that information to display the photo correctly. If an ingest system or image decoder ignores the orientation tag, a portrait photo can appear sideways.
EXIF orientation can also specify mirroring, not just rotation. A pipeline that handles only 90-degree turns can therefore leave some images incorrectly displayed. Apple’s UIImage.Orientation documentation describes the camera behavior and orientation cases, while Core Image provides an EXIF orientation transform for reorienting an image.

Use an orientation-aware decoder or normalize the image pixels before generating derivatives. The key is to apply the orientation once: if a decoder has already corrected the displayed image, applying the EXIF transform again can turn it the wrong way. This workflow follows from Apple’s documented camera behavior and transform API; individual image libraries may differ, so verify how your chosen decoder handles orientation.

- Receive and inspect the file. Read the actual file format, pixel dimensions, and orientation metadata. Do not rely on the filename extension as proof of format or orientation.
- Decode with orientation awareness. Interpret the EXIF orientation value, including mirrored variants, or explicitly transform the pixels to the intended visual orientation.
- Normalize once. Make a canonical image whose pixels match the intended display. Avoid applying a second transform if decoding already honored the orientation.
- Create derivatives from the normalized image. Generate thumbnails and marketplace-specific versions from the corrected visual image so they share the same orientation.
- Validate and report failures. Check each output against the destination’s current format, dimensions, size, color-space, aspect-ratio, composition, content, and metadata rules. Keep a clear error path for files that cannot be decoded or fail a requirement.
What image size and format does my marketplace require?
Requirements vary by marketplace, country, workflow, and image role. Treat the figures below as platform guidance tied to the cited pages, not universal standards; consult the destination’s current seller instructions before setting hard validation rules.

Should I remove camera metadata before uploading product photos?
Decide what to retain based on privacy, product content, and the destination’s requirements. Camera make, model, and exposure settings are optional information for ordinary product photos in the cited marketplace guidance; they do not replace image pixels or provide a dependable substitute for applying orientation. Removing metadata indiscriminately can also remove a field required for a specific disclosure.
Amazon specifies that, under its stated conditions, images featuring photorealistic people generated entirely by AI need the XMP dc:subject keyword contains-synthetic-performer. How should I set up marketplace-specific validation?
- Separate checks by destination and image role. The main image may have composition rules that do not apply to supporting images; country-specific guidance can also differ.
- Keep configuration current. Policies, formats, limits, and disclosure rules can change. CIPA lists Exif 3.1 (DC-008-Translation-2026), published 2026-01-30, and Exif metadata for XMP (DC-010-2026), published 2026-06-01; see its standards listing when implementing format-level compliance.
- Distinguish policy validation from image selection. Passing checks does not guarantee a marketplace will display an image. Amazon explicitly notes that uploading an image does not guarantee it will appear on the product detail page.
- Do not infer commercial outcomes from technical requirements. The cited specifications establish platform rules and recommendations, not evidence that a particular image count, size, or orientation correction increases sales or reduces returns.
