Chrome’s inactive-tab settings can move older tabs out of the main tab view, but the controls differ by platform. On Android, tabs unused for 14 days move to Inactive tabs and are automatically closed after six months unless you switch that option off. On iPhone and iPad, choose Never move to stop tabs moving into the inactive section. These are tab-organization settings; Google’s help pages do not establish that they improve memory use.
Stop Chrome from moving inactive tabs on Android
Chrome for Android moves a tab or tab group that has gone unused for 14 days or more to the Inactive tabs section. To keep inactive tabs in the main tab view:
-
Open Chrome and tap More.
-
Tap Settings, then Tabs and tab groups.
-
Tap Move to inactive section and choose Never.
Google documents this 14-day behavior and setting on its Chrome for Android tab-management help page.

Prevent automatic closure of inactive tabs on Android
Moving a tab to Inactive tabs is separate from closing it. Google says Android tabs and groups in the Inactive section are automatically closed after six months. To prevent that automatic closure, turn off Automatically close inactive items in Chrome’s inactive-tab settings. This closure rule is documented for Android; the cited iPhone and iPad help page does not state the same rule.

Find and reopen tabs already in the inactive section
Inactive tabs are still accessible from Chrome’s tab switcher. On iPhone and iPad, tap Switch Tabs > Inactive Tabs, then select a tab to reopen it. Moving a tab to that section is not the same as deleting it.

What this setting does—and what it does not prove
These controls change where Chrome displays older tabs and, on Android, whether inactive items are automatically closed after six months. Google’s cited documentation does not show that changing them frees a particular amount of memory, makes Chrome faster, or prevents a phone from closing background apps. The setting can reduce clutter in the main tab view, but it is not a verified memory-performance fix.
