Evaluation scores can look healthy even after a grader has become stale: the test cases change, but the rules used to score them do not. Dakota Ma proposes treating graders as versioned artifacts alongside evaluation cases, with deterministic structural checks kept separate from model-based semantic judgment. The proposal is an unexecuted sketch, not a validated harness or benchmark.
Why a grader needs its own version
An evaluation result depends on more than the model and its test cases. It also depends on the rules deciding what counts as a pass. If those rules change silently—or fail to change when the cases do—a score can conceal whether a system improved, regressed, or was simply judged differently.
Ma’s proposal makes the grader’s identity visible and records a grader version on each case. That makes scoring-rule changes reviewable and helps distinguish a model failure from a mismatch between a case and the rules being applied. The goal is diagnostic clarity, not a higher score.
What structural checks can establish
The proposed GoldenCase stores a case ID, prompt, required and forbidden text, a JSON requirement, a grader-version field, and a semantic rubric. Its structural grader checks whether required JSON parses when JSON is required, looks for required and forbidden strings without regard to case, and checks for one boilerplate phrase.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These checks are useful for observable contract requirements: for example, whether output is parseable JSON or contains a required literal. They are deterministic in the sense that the same input and rules produce the same check result. But substring rules are blunt: a correct paraphrase can fail a literal must_include check, while the presence of a phrase does not by itself prove the answer is correct.
What semantic grading adds—and what it cannot guarantee
For interpretive requirements, the sketch sends a rubric and a completion to a configurable endpoint and expects a JSON score and reason. This can assess obligations that are difficult to express as simple string or format checks, but the judgment is still produced by a model. A semantic judge can share the evaluated system’s blind spots, so its score is not independent proof of correctness.

The runner is designed to call semantic grading only after structural checks pass and when endpoint credentials are available. That separation makes different failures easier to inspect: invalid format, a missed semantic obligation, and a grader-version mismatch are not the same event. Ma argues that one aggregate pass rate can obscure distinctions such as instruction-priority failures or invented confidence.

How the example handles grader versions
The sample configuration names the structural grader struct-3 and the semantic grader sem-2026-09-16. These are illustrative strings, not evidence of deployed production versions. Before grading, the runner records a case’s grader-version mismatch against the changelog. The intended effect is to make a stale or inconsistent scoring rule visible rather than quietly treating it as current.

In practice, versioning only helps if the rules themselves are reviewable and the relationship between case and grader is clear. Keep changes to cases and scoring logic in version control, explain why a rule changed, and inspect score differences after an update. The version label is an audit aid, not a substitute for reading the grader.
What the sketch does not demonstrate
Ma explicitly describes the Python as an unexecuted sketch and says the sample cases are not a benchmark. It has not been shown to run, validated, or to improve model quality. Treat it as a design proposal for organizing checks, not as evidence of measured reliability.

- Endpoint failures need deliberate handling. A network timeout can interrupt or skip semantic evaluation. A code-reading critique notes that the displayed URL call sits outside the response-parsing
tryblock and could raise on timeout; this is an observation about the printed sketch, not a reported live failure. - The changelog reader is limited. The critique also notes that the simple reader is not a full TOML parser. A production implementation should use appropriate parsing and explicit error handling rather than assume this sample covers every configuration case.
- Environment-variable fixtures are not statistical evaluation. A small collection of cases can catch regressions, but it cannot establish performance across a population of prompts.
- Disagreements need inspection. Ma cautions against publishing disagreement counts without sampling the disputed rows. A disagreement metric alone does not show which evaluator is right.
How to use the pattern responsibly
- Separate rule types. Use structural assertions for format and literal requirements; use a semantic rubric for obligations that require interpretation.
- Version both sides of the contract. Record the case and the grader version used to score it, and make grader changes reviewable with their rationale.
- Report distinct outcomes. Keep format failures, semantic judgments, and version mismatches distinguishable rather than collapsing them into one pass rate.
- Plan for evaluator unavailability. Decide whether a missing endpoint should cause a test to fail, be marked incomplete, or follow another explicit policy. Do not silently treat an unperformed semantic check as a pass.
- Keep independent review where stakes are high. The pattern is not a replacement for human review of safety-critical answers, nor does it establish that a prompt is good.
Ma’s own concise framing is apt: “The harness is a tripwire for contract drift, not a proof that a prompt is good.” The article was prepared as product outreach and mentions hosted model access and server hosting as optional ways to supply the endpoint and scheduled execution; it does not establish benchmark, quota, model, hardware, or duration promises. Any completion API or always-on host could fill those roles.
