For a skin-applied sensor, the best starting point is clean, completely dry, relatively flat skin; follow the exact model’s placement and water instructions; and reinforce an edge only with an adhesive the manufacturer permits. For a strap-based wrist wearable, focus on a secure, comfortable fit and clean, dry skin—not sensor tape. Water limits and adhesive advice vary by device, and adding adhesive can irritate skin.
First, identify which kind of wearable you have
Adhesive-backed sensors, such as continuous glucose monitors, stick directly to the skin. Strap-based wearables, such as Fitbit devices, stay in place with a band. The fixes are different: a sensor’s lifted edge may call for a compatible overpatch, while a wrist wearable usually needs a better band fit and attention to skin comfort.
Find the instructions for the exact make and model before changing its placement, covering any part of it, or exposing it to water. A water rating or accessory recommendation for one device does not establish what is safe for another.
How to help an adhesive-backed sensor stay on
Prepare the site
- Use the placement location specified in the product instructions. Choose skin that is relatively flat and not commonly rubbed by clothing; avoid folds and scars where possible.
- Start with clean, thoroughly dry skin. Avoid oils, moisturizers, and leftover adhesive at the site.
- Dexcom advises waiting 60 minutes after a bath, shower, or swim before applying a new sensor. It also advises against applying one while hot or sweaty or just before or after exercise. These are Dexcom instructions; check your own device’s guidance. Dexcom adhesive tips
Give the adhesive a chance to set
For the G7 specifically, Dexcom recommends using the included overpatch and keeping it dry and sweat-free for as long as possible during the first 12 hours. The company says the longer it stays dry and sweat-free during that period, the longer it may stick. After it gets wet, gently pat the patch dry. These directions are specific to the G7, not a universal rule for other sensors. Dexcom G7 adhesion guidance

- REUSABLE: wearing it 24-7 typically lasts about a month.
- SOFT: Flex is made of a paper-like material that is tear-resistant and flexible to fit the bendy parts of the body easily and still stay in place. You might forget that you’re wearing a patch!
- WONT STINK: Flex is made of raw elements, like Copper, which is a known odor reducer. It doesn’t stink or leave a smell on you.
- 5 REUSABLE ADHESIVES INCLUDED: Adhesives allow you to stick the Flex directly to your skin, in a spot where you're feeling the most relief. FLEX has skin-friendly silicone-based adhesive that when applied to your skin is very comfortable and won't pull your hair when removed!
Reinforce a lifting edge carefully
If an edge begins to peel, Dexcom advises trimming the peeled portion and adding an overpatch or medical tape. Use only reinforcement compatible with your sensor, and follow its user guide: do not cover a prohibited area or interfere with the sensor. An overpatch is optional reinforcement, not a guarantee against detachment. Dexcom adhesive tips
Do not stick a sensor back on after it has detached unless its manufacturer explicitly says to. Accu-Chek’s SmartGuide instructions say to replace a sensor that falls off and warn that reapplying it may keep it from working correctly. Accu-Chek SmartGuide FAQs

Exercise, showers, and swimming: check the model’s water limits

For any other sensor—or if your product’s instructions differ—use its own instructions rather than extrapolating from this table. A device’s ability to tolerate water also does not mean its adhesive will stay secure through every swim, workout, or shower.

How to keep a strap-based wrist wearable comfortable and secure
For Fitbit wrist wearables, Google advises a secure fit that is not too tight. During exercise, it suggests moving the band higher on the wrist for a secure fit without overtightening. Google also says avoiding showers can reduce exposure to soaps, shampoos, and conditioners that may damage the product over time or irritate skin. These are Fitbit-specific care recommendations. Google Fitbit Product Care
Sensor overpatches and medical tape are not the solution for a strap-based wearable. If the band causes discomfort, loosen or remove it rather than tightening it to stop movement.

Watch for irritation and stop if it develops
Extra adhesive is not automatically skin-safe. Dexcom notes that some barrier approaches have not been tested with its devices and that barrier-film ingredients can irritate. Ask a healthcare professional about sensitivity or irritation before trying a barrier film, underpatch, or other skin product; do not treat antiperspirant or steroid sprays as routine attachment fixes. Choosing an adhesive accessory
There is no established universally best overpatch in the cited evidence. If you are considering one, check the exact model compatibility, whether it is an overlay or an underpatch/barrier, its placement instructions, any water or sweat claims and their limits, and how it may affect sensitive skin or removal. Distinguish device-maker instructions from seller claims.
