First, make sure the mat is designed for hard floors: carpet mats with cleats or grippers are not suitable for hardwood. Clean and dry the floor and mat underside, check that the mat lies flat, and make sure it covers the chair’s full rolling path. If it still moves, consider a hard-floor mat with anti-slip backing or a thin underlayment—but confirm that its materials are compatible with your floor’s finish.
1. Check that the mat is made for hardwood
A carpet mat’s cleats or grippers are meant to engage carpet, not a wood floor. American Floor Mats advises against using carpet chair mats on wood, tile, stone, concrete, or vinyl; its hard-surface mat guidance describes a smooth backing instead. Choose a mat explicitly intended for hard floors, and check its instructions for your floor type.
Backing material matters as much as the “non-slip” label. Tarkett North America advises using chair pads approved for hardwood under repetitive caster action, such as desk chairs, and warns that rubber backings and dyes can discolor engineered wood. Ask your flooring maker about your specific floor and finish before putting a new mat, pad, or underlayment on it: compatibility can vary, and a backing marketed as non-slip is not automatically safe for every finish. 2. Clean the floor and mat, then check that it lies flat
- Move the chair and lift the mat. Sweep or vacuum grit from the floor; particles trapped beneath a mat can scratch or abrade the finish.
- Clean the mat’s underside and the floor according to their care instructions. Let both dry fully before putting the mat back.
- Check whether the mat is flat rather than curled or buckled. If it was shipped rolled, unroll it and lay it on a flat surface. American Floor Mats says some rolled mats can take up to 72 hours to regain their natural shape. American Floor Mats’ flattening guidance.
- Set the mat back on the clean, dry floor and test it with the chair. If the mat is still sliding, continue with the coverage and backing checks below.
3. Make sure the mat covers the chair’s full travel path
Move the chair through its usual range: back from the desk, side to side, and toward any drawers or equipment you reach while seated. The mat should cover the area the casters actually cross. A chair-mat user guide notes that repeated movement off and back onto the mat can contribute to mat movement. If the casters frequently cross the edge, choose a larger mat or reposition the existing one so the chair stays on it during normal use. Fellowes chair-mat care instructions.

4. Choose an appropriate way to reduce slipping
For a replacement mat
Look for a hard-floor mat whose manufacturer confirms it is suitable for your flooring. For a polished or high-gloss floor, the chair-mat user guide recommends a smooth mat with anti-slip backing; it also notes that some highly polished or treated surfaces may still be unsuitable. Verify compatibility with the flooring maker before use rather than relying on a generic “rubber-backed” or “non-slip” description. Fellowes chair-mat care instructions.
For a mat you already own
A thin underlayment may help when a compatible mat will not stay stationary, but do not assume that any rug pad will work. Wolfe Flooring recommends a thin underlayment in that situation; its guidance also recommends 110 mil (0.11 inch) mats for smooth hardwood and 170 mil (0.17 inch) mats for irregular hardwood. Those thicknesses are Wolfe Flooring’s recommendations, not universal standards. Confirm that both the underlayment and mat are approved for your floor finish and suitable beneath a rolling chair. 5. Recheck the floor beneath the mat
Lift the mat periodically to remove dust or grit and check for trapped moisture or changes to the finish. Keep the mat and floor clean and dry before replacing it. If you see discoloration or other finish changes, stop using the mat or pad and ask the flooring maker how to proceed.
