Yes—you can usually join a Zoom meeting without installing or opening the Zoom Workplace app. Open the meeting invitation, cancel the prompt to open or install Zoom Workplace, and choose Join from your browser. Then enter the passcode and display name if requested, allow microphone or camera access, and join the meeting.
This option is not available for every meeting. The host or account administrator can disable browser joining, and meetings using Zoom end-to-end encryption (E2EE) require the desktop or mobile app. Authentication, registration, an outdated browser, or mobile-device restrictions can also affect the process. See Zoom’s browser-join requirements.
What “join from your browser” means
Zoom calls the in-browser meeting experience the Zoom Web App. It runs inside a supported web browser and does not normally require the Zoom Workplace desktop or mobile application, a browser extension, or an old Zoom plugin. Zoom’s joining instructions describe this as an alternative to launching the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese three Zoom services are different:
- Zoom Web App: The browser-based interface you use to participate in a meeting.
- Zoom web portal: The browser-based account site used for tasks such as scheduling meetings, changing account settings, and managing profile options. Opening the web portal does not itself join a meeting.
- Zoom Workplace app: The desktop or mobile application that this guide helps you avoid installing or launching.
The Web App is primarily a participant solution. It supports the core meeting experience, but Zoom recommends its desktop or mobile app when you need the widest feature set or advanced host controls.

Before you start
Have the following ready:
- A Zoom invitation link or the meeting ID.
- The meeting passcode, unless it is included in the invitation link or the host does not require one.
- A current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
- A working microphone for two-way computer audio.
- A camera only if you want to send video.
- A reliable internet connection.
- Permission for the browser to use your microphone and camera.
You usually do not need a Zoom account to join an ordinary meeting as a guest. However, the host can require a signed-in Zoom account, a specific email domain, an organization account, SSO authentication, or meeting registration. Not installing the app and not having a Zoom account are separate issues. Review Zoom’s authentication requirements.
Join from a Zoom invitation link
This is the normal method if the host sent a link by email, calendar invitation, text message, or another service.
- Open the Zoom meeting link in your preferred browser. If possible, use the latest browser available on the device.
- Cancel the app prompt. If Zoom asks to open, launch, or install Zoom Workplace, select Cancel. Do not choose Open, Launch Meeting, or Download if you want to stay in the browser.
- Choose the browser option. Select Join from your browser. Depending on the language, device, or current Zoom interface, the label may appear as Join from Browser or similar wording. It commonly appears on the meeting-launch page after you dismiss the app prompt.
- Enter the passcode if Zoom requests it. A passcode may already be embedded in the invitation link, but not every link includes one.
- Enter your display name. This is the name other participants and the host may see.
- Allow microphone and camera access if you want to use computer audio or video. Camera permission is needed only for outgoing video; microphone permission is needed for others to hear you.
- Choose your video state. Select whether to join with video on or off.
- Click Join and select an audio method if Zoom asks.
You may see Waiting for host if the host has not started the meeting yet. A waiting room means you have joined successfully but the host must admit you. Neither message necessarily indicates a browser problem. Zoom explains these meeting-launch states here.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Join with only a meeting ID
If you do not have a clickable invitation, use Zoom’s meeting-join page:
- Open https://join.zoom.us/.
- Enter the meeting ID supplied by the host.
- Click Join.
- When Zoom offers a choice, select Join from your browser.
- If it appears, select Always join from browser. This preference is associated with the
join.zoom.usflow and can make browser joining the default for future meetings joined through that page. - Enter the meeting passcode and display name if requested.
- Allow the requested device permissions, choose your audio and video settings, and join.
If you have only the meeting ID but not the passcode, ask the host for it. Zoom can embed an encrypted passcode in an invitation link for one-click joining, but manually entering a meeting ID may still require the passcode separately. See Zoom’s documentation for the browser-join preference and its explanation of passcodes in invitation links.
Browser and device requirements
Zoom lists the following minimum browser versions for the Web App:
| Browser | Zoom-listed minimum |
|---|---|
| Google Chrome | 102 or higher |
| Microsoft Edge | 102 or higher |
| Mozilla Firefox | 105 or higher |
| Safari | 16.4 or higher |
These are reference minimums, not a guarantee of a trouble-free meeting. Safari support is tied to the Apple operating-system version. In practice, use the newest Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari that your device supports. Zoom says browsers more than three years old may have limited Web App functionality beginning in January 2026. Zoom also ended Web App support for Windows 32-bit and 32-bit browsers after December 15, 2025. Check Zoom’s browser requirements and its browser-age and 32-bit guidance.

The Web App is available across desktop and mobile environments, including Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, but mobile browsers have fewer capabilities than desktop browsers. ChromeOS devices are also a common browser-based Zoom platform.
Memory and connection guidelines
Zoom recommends at least 8 GB of RAM on Windows and macOS devices and 4 GB of RAM on ChromeOS devices. During a meeting, the Web App may use approximately 1–1.5 GB of active memory.
Zoom’s example bandwidth recommendations include:
| Use case | Approximate bandwidth |
|---|---|
| 1:1 high-quality video | 600 Kbps up and down |
| Group high-quality video | 1.0 Mbps download / 600 Kbps upload |
| Group 720p video | 2.6 Mbps download / 1.8 Mbps upload |
| VoIP audio | 60–80 Kbps |
These figures are recommendations, not a promise that a connection with those speeds will perform well under every network condition. Other network activity, Wi-Fi quality, latency, and device performance can still affect the call. See Zoom’s complete Web App requirements.
Desktop browser versus mobile browser
| Capability | Desktop browser | Mobile browser |
|---|---|---|
| Join a meeting | Generally supported when the host allows browser joining | Supported when mobile browser access is enabled and the device is compatible |
| Microphone and camera | Supported with browser and operating-system permission | Supported with browser and operating-system permission |
| View another participant’s shared screen | Supported | Supported |
| Start screen sharing | Supported in supported desktop browsers | Not currently supported from mobile browsers |
| Feature breadth | Greater than mobile browser access | More limited than desktop browser access |
| Best fallback if a feature is missing | Use the Zoom Workplace app if permitted | Use the mobile app or a desktop browser |
Zoom says mobile-browser screen sharing is unavailable because of Android and iOS Screen Capture API limitations. You can view shared content on a phone or tablet browser, but you cannot initiate screen sharing there. Read Zoom’s permission and mobile-browser guidance.
Allow microphone, camera, and screen permissions
The browser needs microphone access for other people to hear you. Camera access is needed only when you send video. Screen-sharing permission is needed only when you share your screen from a supported desktop browser. Zoom’s permissions guide covers these controls.
If you accidentally clicked Block
- Click the site-information, lock, or settings icon beside the Zoom address in the browser’s address bar.
- Open the site permissions.
- Set Microphone and Camera to Allow. Set screen-sharing permissions if you intend to share your screen and the browser presents that option.
- Reload the meeting page.
- When prompted again, select the correct microphone, camera, and speaker.
If the device still blocks access, check the operating system:

On a work, school, public, or borrowed device, an administrator may control these permissions. In that situation, you may not be able to change them yourself.
Join Zoom meeting audio
After you enter the meeting, click Join Audio if Zoom has not already connected you. Depending on the meeting and host account, you may see:
- Computer Audio: Uses the browser’s microphone and speakers or headset.
- Phone Call: Displays a telephone number and meeting details for dialing in.
- Call Me: Has Zoom call your phone when this feature is enabled and available.
Telephone and Call Me availability depends on the host’s settings; some options also require an audio-conferencing plan. If your computer has no usable microphone or speaker, use a dial-in number in the invitation when telephone participation is enabled. See Zoom’s telephone-audio requirements.
When Zoom asks you to sign in or register
Browser joining and meeting access requirements are independent. You may be able to avoid the app but still need to complete one of these steps:
Ordinary guest access
For an ordinary meeting, Zoom may ask only for a display name. You can often join without creating or signing in to a Zoom account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Authentication required
The host may require you to sign in to Zoom, use a specific email domain, belong to a particular account, or authenticate through your organization’s SSO system. If the host only requires a signed-in Zoom account, a free Basic commercial Zoom account can be sufficient, but you must use the authorized account or email identity. Check Zoom’s authentication guidance.
Registration required
Some meetings require you to complete a registration form before joining. Use the confirmation message or unique join link generated after registration. If the meeting also requires authentication, you may need an active Zoom account in addition to registering. See Zoom’s registration instructions and troubleshooting.

Why “Join from your browser” is missing
If you cannot find the browser link, work through these possibilities in order:
- The host or administrator disabled browser joining. Zoom allows account administrators and hosts to control whether participants can join through a desktop or mobile browser. A participant cannot override this restriction. Ask the host to enable browser access or use another approved method.
- The meeting uses E2EE. The Web App supports enhanced encryption but not Zoom’s end-to-end encryption mode. Participants in an E2EE meeting must use the desktop or mobile app. Ask the host whether the meeting’s encryption requirement can be changed or whether another meeting method is available.
- Your browser or device is too old. Update the browser, restart it, and open the invitation again. Pay particular attention to the 32-bit browser restriction and Zoom’s warning about browsers more than three years old.
- You are using a mobile browser. Mobile-browser joining can be controlled separately from desktop-browser joining. The host may allow desktop browser access but not mobile browser access.
- You are on the wrong page. The browser choice usually appears after opening the specific meeting link and dismissing the app-launch prompt. It may not appear on Zoom’s general homepage or account portal.
- The link keeps opening the app. Click Cancel on the app prompt. Do not select a browser option such as Always open these types of links in the associated app. When joining through
join.zoom.us, choose Always join from browser if that preference is offered. - The meeting requires authentication or registration. The browser option may still work, but you must sign in with the required account or complete the host’s registration process first.
Zoom says its Show a “Join from your browser” link setting is enabled by default in applicable unlocked configurations beginning February 7, 2026. Previously disabled and locked settings remain disabled, so this default does not guarantee that every meeting will offer browser joining. Read Zoom’s current administrator-setting information.
Quick troubleshooting guide
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No browser link appears | The host or account disabled it | Ask the host to enable browser joining, or use the app or telephone option. |
| The link is missing only for one meeting | E2EE, host restrictions, registration, or authentication | Ask the host which access requirement applies. |
| Zoom keeps opening the app | The browser is handing the link to the Zoom app protocol | Cancel the prompt, avoid the always-open-in-app choice, and use the browser preference on join.zoom.us when available. |
| The name field appears but Join fails | Incorrect passcode, registration, authentication, or host restriction | Recheck the invitation, sign in with the authorized account, or contact the host. |
| The microphone does not work | Browser or operating-system permission was denied | Allow microphone access, reload the page, and select the correct microphone. |
| The camera does not work | Camera permission was denied, or another app is using the camera | Allow camera access, close competing camera apps, reload, and choose another camera if available. |
| You cannot start screen sharing on a phone or tablet | Mobile-browser limitation | Use a desktop browser, the Zoom Workplace app, or another approved sharing method. |
| “Waiting for host” appears | The host has not started the meeting | Wait or contact the host. The browser connection may already be working. |
| The waiting room appears | The host is screening participants | Wait for the host to admit you. |
| The registration page is stuck | Cache, cookies, an incompatible browser, an invalid link, or host configuration | Try a private window, clear Zoom site data, update the browser, try another browser, or ask the host to resend the registration link. |
| An authentication error appears | The meeting requires a signed-in or authorized account | Sign in with the required account or ask the host whether the requirement can be changed. |
| The Web App behaves unpredictably | Outdated browser, 32-bit browser, managed-device policy, or network problem | Update the browser, try another supported browser or device, check permissions, or use the app. |
For a registration problem, Zoom specifically recommends trying private browsing, clearing cache and cookies, using another browser, and asking the host to resend the link when necessary. See Zoom’s registration troubleshooting steps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the Zoom Web App can and cannot do
For ordinary participation, the Web App generally provides the controls most guests need:
- Join computer audio.
- Mute and unmute.
- Start and stop video.
- Use in-meeting chat.
- View another participant’s shared content.
- Share a screen from a supported desktop browser.
- Use reactions and other participant feedback.
- Participate in breakout rooms, polls, and other meeting features when the host enables them and the browser version supports them.
Availability can vary by browser, device, meeting type, host settings, account plan, and Zoom’s current feature rollout. Zoom’s Web App feature comparison is the authoritative reference for a particular capability.
Choose the desktop or mobile app instead when:
- The meeting uses E2EE.
- You need the broadest feature set or advanced host controls.
- You need to start screen sharing from a phone or tablet.
- You are hosting and need controls that are limited or unavailable in the browser.
- You need app-specific recording, device, or administration features.
- Your browser is old, unstable, blocked by organizational policy, or unable to access your microphone or camera.
- The meeting is important enough that you want the most predictable experience.
Zoom recommends the desktop or mobile app for the most feature-rich experience, while positioning the Web App as a useful alternative when the app is unavailable or cannot be installed. Compare Zoom’s web, desktop, and mobile features.

A successful test confirms that the browser can use your devices, but it does not guarantee that a particular host will permit browser joining. The real meeting may still require registration, authentication, a particular account, or the Zoom app because of E2EE or organization policy.
Privacy when joining without the app
Joining as a guest without a Zoom account is not the same as joining anonymously. The host may see the display name you enter, and the host can require registration, authentication, video, or other participant information. Hosts can also remove participants. See Zoom’s participant and guest-joining information.
Use an appropriate display name for the meeting. If you do not want to transmit video, leave your camera off and do not grant camera access unless Zoom requires it for the meeting. Microphone permission is still necessary if you want to speak through computer audio.

- Use Zoom Workplace: Install or open the desktop or mobile app if the meeting requires it and the device allows installation.
- Use telephone audio: Dial a number in the invitation if the host has enabled telephone participation.
- Ask the host for help: The host may need to enable browser joining, provide the passcode, resend a registration link, or explain an authentication requirement.
- Try another browser or device: Use a current supported browser, preferably on a desktop or laptop if mobile access is restricted.
- Use a different connection: If the page loads but audio or video is unreliable, try a stronger network or reduce other network activity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I join Zoom without a Zoom account?
Usually, yes, for an ordinary guest meeting. The host can require a signed-in Zoom account, a particular email domain, SSO authentication, or registration. You can avoid installing the app while still needing to sign in.
Why is “Join from your browser” not available?
The host or account administrator may have disabled browser joining, the meeting may use end-to-end encryption, mobile-browser access may be disabled, or your browser may be unsupported. Registration and authentication requirements can also change what you see.
Can I join a Zoom meeting from my phone’s browser?
Often, if the host allows mobile-browser access and the browser is compatible. Mobile browser capabilities are more limited, however: you can view shared content but cannot currently initiate screen sharing from a mobile browser.
Can I join Zoom by phone if the browser does not work?
You may be able to use the telephone number and meeting details in the invitation. This works only when the host has enabled telephone participation; Call Me and some audio-conferencing options may require specific host-account features.
The Bottom Line
For the usual browser-only join: open the invitation, click Cancel when Zoom tries to open the app, select Join from your browser, enter the requested passcode and name, allow the necessary permissions, and join audio. If the browser link is missing, the cause is usually a host restriction, E2EE, mobile-browser policy, authentication or registration, or an outdated browser—not a missing plugin.
