There is no single “jailbreak” command for Android. The phrase usually stands for three separate operations: unlocking the bootloader, installing a custom operating system, and gaining root privileges. Each has different prerequisites, and whether any of them is possible depends on your phone’s manufacturer, exact model, carrier variant, and software version. The safe way to proceed is to confirm that your device supports the change, back up everything first, and follow instructions written for that exact device.
What “jailbreak” means on Android
The word is imprecise here because the three operations are not interchangeable. Unlocking changes what the phone allows you to write to its partitions. A custom operating system replaces the software that runs the phone. Root gives software elevated privileges. You can do one without the others, and no official Android procedure performs all three on every phone.
| Operation | What it does | What it is tied to in the official sources |
|---|---|---|
| Bootloader unlocking | Allows flashing of the bootloader and device partitions, which most Android devices ship without. | An OEM unlocking control on supported devices. A carrier SIM lock may keep it unavailable. |
| Custom operating system (custom ROM) | Replaces the stock system software with a third-party build. | An unlocked bootloader, according to Google’s Pixel guidance. Builds must match your exact device. |
| Root access | Gives software elevated privileges beyond what the stock system allows. | Not stated in Android’s official documentation. Methods are device-specific. |
For a custom operating system, Google describes an unlocked bootloader as a condition for modified OS software, so unlocking is the gate most readers meet first. Root is different: Android’s documentation does not supply a root procedure, so those instructions have to come from a device-specific source.

- The manufacturer and exact model number, usually listed under Settings > About phone. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
- The carrier variant. A phone bought through a carrier may be SIM locked, which can block unlocking.
- The Android version and security patch level, shown under Settings > About phone.
- Your goal: a custom operating system, root access, or another modification. Each has different requirements.
- A maintained, device-specific guide that names your exact model and carrier variant.
If you cannot find a guide that names your model and variant, you do not yet have what you need to proceed safely.
Check whether your phone can be unlocked at all
The OEM unlocking control
The Android Open Source Project’s Lock and unlock the bootloader guide states that “by default, most Android devices ship with a locked bootloader, meaning that users can’t flash the bootloader or device partitions.” Where a device supports unlocking, the switch is the OEM unlocking control in Developer options. If the control is missing or disabled, treat that as a stop signal rather than a setting to work around.
Carrier-locked phones
AOSP’s Flash with Fastboot reference notes that OEM unlocking may remain unavailable when a device is SIM locked by its carrier. If you bought the phone on a carrier plan, check its lock status with the carrier or the manufacturer before you work through the steps below.

Warranty
AOSP’s sample unlock warning says unlocking “may void warranty.” That wording does not tell you what your warranty covers. Read the manufacturer’s current terms and check your local consumer rules before you unlock.
What unlocking does to your data and security
Unlocking erases user data
The Android Open Source Project’s System security best practices page states that unlocking deletes all user data, including private app data and shared data such as photos and movies. Once the wipe starts, nothing on the phone is kept. Confirm that you can open the files in your backup before the first command is run (step 1 of the procedure below).
Factory Reset Protection
Android Enterprise documentation says that Factory Reset Protection is disabled when OEM unlocking is enabled in Developer options. Normally, Factory Reset Protection requires the previous Google account sign-in after a reset. While OEM unlocking stays on, that protection is off. If you no longer need the setting after unlocking, consider turning it back off where your device allows it.

Verified boot and app behavior
Google’s Verify your Android operating system help page explains how an unlocked or unverified state appears when a Pixel verifies its operating system. The AOSP security guidance is more direct. Its sample warning reads:
Recommended Free Tools
“A custom OS isn’t subject to the same testing as the original OS, and can cause your phone and installed apps to stop working properly.”
The cited official sources do not establish which apps will fail, so do not assume that banking, payment, or streaming apps will break, and do not assume they will keep working. Check the apps you depend on after each change, and avoid relying on the phone for critical tasks until you have confirmed they work.

The unlock procedure, step by step
The steps below follow the flow in AOSP’s flashing reference. Read them as a map of what to expect. Your device’s own guide sets the exact menu labels, key combinations, and unlock command. You will need a data-capable USB cable (one that carries data, not charge-only) and a computer with Android platform tools installed.
- Back up and verify. Copy photos, documents, messages, and any app data you cannot replace to a computer or cloud account, then open a sample of those files to confirm the copy works.
- Enable Developer options. Go to Settings > About phone and tap Build number seven times. Paths vary by manufacturer; use your device’s guide if they differ.
- Turn on OEM unlocking. Go to Settings > Developer options and enable OEM unlocking. If the switch is missing or greyed out, stop here.
- Turn on USB debugging and connect. In Developer options, enable USB debugging, connect the phone to the computer, and accept the authorization prompt on the phone.
- Enter bootloader mode. Run
adb reboot bootloaderfrom the computer, or use the key combination your device’s guide specifies. - Run the unlock command for your device. AOSP’s reference gives
fastboot flashing unlockfor supported newer Nexus and Pixel devices andfastboot oem unlockfor devices from before 2015. Use the command your device’s guide specifies. Do not apply these commands to other phones. - Read the warning and confirm the wipe. The phone displays a warning and a data-erase prompt. Once you confirm, your data is erased.
- Reboot and set up. Work through the setup screens. The phone starts with a fresh system.
Installing a custom ROM and gaining root
Custom ROMs
A custom ROM (custom operating system) is a separate download and flash after unlocking. Before you flash anything, confirm the following:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The build names your exact model and carrier variant, not a sibling model.
- The project is maintained, and its release notes match your current Android version.
- The firmware files come from a source whose published instructions you can check.
- You know where to get official software for your model, from the manufacturer’s official repair or factory-image resources for that device.
Root access
Android’s official documentation does not provide a root procedure, and the official pages cited here do not say which methods work on which phones. Root instructions must come from a device-specific source that lists your exact model, variant, and Android version. Treat root as a security-relevant change in its own right, because it changes what software on the phone can do.

Relocking and returning to stock
The documented AOSP flow includes relocking, using the lock counterpart of the command in your device’s guide. Google’s guidance notes that a factory data reset may be needed when a locked bootloader is restored, so plan for a wipe. Google’s Pixel help page recommends locking the bootloader to improve security. Relock only with official software for your model. Do not assume relocking is safe with a custom image you have not verified.
When something goes wrong
- The unlock option is missing or greyed out. The device may not support unlocking, or a carrier SIM lock may apply. Check the lock status before trying other methods.
- The phone won’t get past the boot screen. Restore official software for your exact model using the manufacturer’s official repair or factory-image resources.
- Apps or features fail after a custom ROM. Check the project’s known-issues notes, or return to official software.
Should you proceed?
Proceed only if all of the following are true: the manufacturer or a maintained project supports your exact model and variant; OEM unlocking appears in Developer options; you have a backup you have tested; you understand that Factory Reset Protection is disabled while OEM unlocking is enabled; and you accept that the phone may no longer behave as a stock device. If you rely on the phone for work, payments, or two-factor authentication, wait until you have a tested way to restore it, because the official sources do not establish which apps will break.
