To add someone to YouTube Premium, the family manager must invite them through the paid membership’s Family sharing settings. The invitee accepts the email or text invitation using their own Google Account. This works for eligible household members on a family plan—not for adding another person to an individual membership.
Before you send an invitation
Only the family manager—the person who manages the paid membership—can invite or manage family-plan members. A family plan covers the manager and up to five additional people. Each person uses their own Google Account, so their library, subscriptions, recommendations, and watch history remain separate. See YouTube’s family-plan requirements.

- The manager and invitee must live at the same residential address. YouTube says an electronic check-in confirms this every 30 days; see its Android family-plan guidance.
- The invitee cannot already be in another family group and must not have switched family groups in the previous 12 months.
- Google Workspace accounts cannot start or join this family plan. Use a regular Google Account.
- The manager and invitee must be in a country or region where the relevant YouTube plan is offered. A mismatch between the Google Pay country or region and the user’s current location can cause an error.
These requirements are enforced by Google; do not change or misrepresent location information to get around them.

Invite someone from the YouTube Android app
- Sign in to the Google Account associated with the YouTube paid membership.
- Tap your profile picture, then tap Purchases and memberships.
- Tap the membership.
- Beside Family sharing settings, tap Edit, then Invite a new member.
- Enter the person’s email address or phone number and tap Send.
- Ask the invitee to open the email or text and follow its instructions to join the family group.
The steps above follow YouTube’s Android instructions. Menu names may differ by platform or locale.

Invite someone from a computer
- Sign in to the Google Account associated with the paid membership.
- Open youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Select Manage membership.
- Click Edit beside Family sharing settings.
- Choose Invite family member, enter the person’s email address or phone number, and send the invitation.
- The invitee must follow the instructions in the email or text to join.
These browser steps are described in Google’s family-group help. If the invitee has not accepted, check that you sent the invitation to the correct address or number and ask them to look for the message.
If the invitation fails or the person cannot join
- Check which account manages the membership. Make sure you are signed in as the family manager, using the Google Account linked to the paid plan.
- Check the invitee’s family-group status. They cannot be in another family group or have switched groups within the previous 12 months.
- Check account type. A Google Workspace account is not eligible; the invitee needs a regular Google Account.
- Check household and region eligibility. The manager and invitee must meet the same-residential-address rule and be in a region where the plan is available. YouTube notes that a Google Pay country or region that does not match the current location can trigger a setup error.
- Check the invitee’s existing membership. An individual-plan member who wants to join a family plan must cancel the individual membership first. If an annual plan is involved, it must expire before upgrading. Follow the current Google family-plan instructions for the account’s specific situation.
Family plan or Two-person plan?
A family plan can include up to five additional household members; the separate Two-person plan is for one additional household member. Both depend on household eligibility, and plan availability varies by region.
