How to Invite Friends and Set Up Four-Player Co-Op in Stardew Valley on Steam

For Stardew Valley, invite friends through the game’s co-op flow or Steam, and remember that the four-player limit includes the host. The host must stay in the game while everyone plays. These steps are specific to Stardew Valley; other Steam life-sims may use different menus, player limits, and multiplayer rules.

Choose native co-op or Steam Remote Play Together

Stardew Valley has native online co-op: players join a shared farm through the game. Steam Remote Play Together is a different feature for games with supported local multiplayer. It invites friends through the Steam friends list and streams a local-play session from the host; it is not a universal replacement for a game’s native online co-op. See Steamworks’ Remote Play documentation and check the target game’s current Steam listing and instructions to confirm its supported modes and requirements.

Start or load a Stardew Valley co-op farm

1. Have the host start a new co-op farm or load a farm set up for co-op. The exact setup depends on whether the group is starting fresh or returning to an existing farm.

2. Have friends open the game’s co-op join screen. According to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s multiplayer instructions, farms hosted by Steam friends can appear there.

3. If the farm does not appear, the host can send an invitation through Steam from the game’s options tab. The available invite controls depend on the game being able to access the player’s Steam or GOG account.

4. Keep the host in the game for the session. In Stardew Valley, the host’s farm is the shared world, so guests cannot continue playing it while the host is away.

What four-player co-op means

Stardew Valley supports four players total in the documented co-op setup, with the host counted as one of those four—not four guests plus a host. The developer stated this limit in a 2019 multiplayer announcement. Check the current documentation for another game rather than assuming it uses the same cap or counts players the same way.

If friends cannot join

• Check game versions. The official Stardew Valley multiplayer troubleshooting guide says all players must be on the same game version.

• Check account access. If invite or invite-code controls are missing, the troubleshooting guide says the game could not access the player’s Steam or GOG account.

Can local and remote players share one Stardew Valley farm?

Stardew Valley documents support for combining remote and split-screen players in one world, subject to restrictions. Its guide also describes split-screen play for up to four players. This mixed setup is game-specific: confirm that another title supports both local split-screen and remote participation before planning a group session.
