A security alert is a lead, not proof that every endpoint is compromised. Validate what triggered it, use evidence across endpoint, identity, and network systems to define the scope, preserve evidence that may disappear, and contain systems in proportion to the observed risk. Assign an incident lead before taking actions that could disrupt services or affect a large part of the fleet.
The sequence below follows the response lifecycle in NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3, which places incident response within the Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 risk-management context and supersedes Rev. 2. CISA’s federal incident-response playbook provides a related sequence; its formal scope is Federal Civilian Executive Branch systems, though CISA says its broader practices may also help other organizations.
1. Who owns the incident, and what did the alert actually observe?
Open or update the incident record and assign an incident lead. Record the alert source, event time and detection time, device and user identifiers, the tool’s severity and confidence, observed process or behavior, related indicators, and actions already taken. Preserve the original alert details and the search parameters used later so another responder can reproduce the investigation.
Define who can authorize endpoint isolation, identity actions, broader network controls, and external reporting. Use the organization’s incident plan for escalation and coordination; CISA’s playbook emphasizes assigned responsibilities and tracking response activity.

Validate the signal
Determine what the detection observed and whether it could reflect a benign administrative action, repeated signals from one event, or one part of a larger intrusion. Corroborate it with relevant endpoint telemetry, centralized logs, identity events, and network observations. An alert score is a prioritization input, not a verdict; the appropriate validation method depends on the detection and the data available in your environment.
2. How do you find the scope across the fleet?
Search centrally for related activity during a time window justified by the evidence. Start with the indicator or behavior that triggered the alert, then pivot across available endpoint, identity, network, and SIEM records. CISA recommends reviewing multiple log sources and using endpoint visibility and indicator searches to identify additional systems.
- Endpoint telemetry: search for matching process lineage, file hashes, command lines, behavior, and related events.
- Identity records: check relevant accounts, authentication events, and activity associated with the affected users or devices.
- Network observations: query available DNS, proxy, firewall, and other network records for related destinations or connections.
- Centralized events: correlate EDR and SIEM events where available, retaining the query parameters and results.
Track four populations separately so a lack of evidence is not mistaken for proof of safety:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Confirmed affected: evidence directly supports malicious or unauthorized activity.
- Suspected or exposed: a credible relationship exists, but evidence is incomplete.
- Queried with no matching evidence: the device was checked against the defined scope and no match was found.
- Not yet assessed: the device has not been reliably queried or its relevant telemetry is unavailable.
For each group, record the evidence and confidence behind its classification. Include workstations, laptops, servers, virtual endpoints, and systems under any potentially affected management control plane. Do not assume that a single search covers systems with missing telemetry or different management paths.
There is no universal triage time, batch size, or confidence threshold established by the cited guidance. Set those according to your incident plan, risk tolerance, available telemetry, and service dependencies.

3. What should you preserve before or during containment?
Capture volatile or short-retention evidence early when operationally feasible. CISA specifically identifies system memory, Windows Security logs, and firewall log buffers as examples of evidence that may be lost or overwritten. For ransomware response, its guidance also recommends imaging a sample of affected devices and collecting relevant logs and malware or indicators when immediate mitigation is not possible.
Document collection times, the systems involved, custodians, and the actions taken. Preserve the alert record, relevant search results, and a timeline of decisions and approvals. Follow your organization’s evidence-handling procedures; the cited guidance does not prescribe one universal order for evidence collection and isolation.
4. How should you choose the containment scope?
Contain confirmed or strongly suspected endpoints through approved EDR or network controls when the evidence and risk warrant it. If multiple systems or subnets appear affected, consider whether a segment-level measure is needed. CISA’s ransomware guidance describes switch-level network isolation as a possible measure in a multi-system incident, not as an automatic response for every alert.
| Response choice | Consider it in light of | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Isolate an individual endpoint | Evidence tied to that device, risk of lateral movement, and the device’s service role. | Limits that endpoint’s connectivity, but may interrupt its work or complicate evidence collection. |
| Isolate a network segment or switch | Observed spread across systems or subnets, confidence in scope, critical services, and network dependencies. | Can constrain broader spread, but may disrupt multiple systems and services. |
| Automate a configured response | Action severity, policy maturity, blast radius, rollback options, and auditability. | Can speed a predefined response; high-impact actions still need an accountable owner and an audit trail. |
| Require analyst approval | Uncertainty, potential service impact, and the organization’s incident policy. | Adds a decision point before action; the incident plan should make the approval path clear. |
Balance the risk of spread against the operational impact of acting. Prioritize critical services, coordinate with system owners, and have the incident lead use the approved plan to decide whether evidence capture or immediate containment comes first in the specific incident. The cited guidance supports both prompt isolation and preservation of volatile evidence but does not prescribe one ordering for every case.
5. Is the endpoint-management control plane trustworthy?
Before sending broad commands, assess whether the systems and accounts that manage endpoints remain trustworthy. Review privileged-account use, management-server access, policy changes, and unusual administrative activity. Restrict and monitor management infrastructure during the incident, and verify its integrity before relying on it for fleet-wide containment or remediation.

This matters because management systems can have privileged reach across large endpoint populations. CISA documented a red-team path in which compromise of a mobile device management server exposed thousands of connected workstations. That example demonstrates possible impact; it does not establish that every management platform or alert is compromised.
Use the specific platform’s approved procedures for detailed checks. The cited CISA material supports the control-plane risk and role-based delegation, but does not establish product-specific steps for a particular MDM, EDR, or identity system.

Connect EDR alerts and response actions to the organization’s incident workflow, SIEM, or SOAR where configured. CISA’s CDM technical-capability requirements describe policy-configured response actions, incident-workflow integration, SIEM reporting, event export, and role-based delegation. These capabilities can support a documented process; they do not replace incident judgment. Retain a human owner for high-impact actions.
- Eradicate based on evidence. Remove the cause and persistence using a plan informed by the investigation; do not assume that isolating a device alone resolves the incident.
- Validate before return. Confirm that affected devices and accounts are safe to restore to normal operation.
- Restore by criticality and dependency. Coordinate the order with system owners and service dependencies.
- Monitor after restoration. Watch for repeated indicators or signs of re-entry and feed new evidence back into the incident scope.
NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3 frames incident response as part of broader cybersecurity risk management. CISA’s playbook also separates containment from eradication and recovery, followed by post-incident activity and coordination.
7. What belongs in the closeout and communications record?
Record the affected and unaffected populations, how scope was determined, evidence collected, decisions and approvals, containment timestamps, recovery status, and uncertainty that remains. Share information through the organization’s incident plan with leadership, system owners, and legal or privacy teams as appropriate. Coordinate with regulators, law enforcement, or CISA when required by the plan or applicable obligations. Reporting requirements vary by sector and jurisdiction; no specific obligation can be determined without that context.
