International investors seeking direct exposure to Thai-listed companies generally need to open an account with a Thai brokerage firm that accepts residents of their country. The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) outlines the account-opening process, but it does not guarantee that every broker accepts nonresident clients or supports remote onboarding. Before applying, confirm eligibility, the share line available for your chosen company, funding and settlement terms, and how taxes will be handled.

Choose between direct Thai shares and indirect exposure

First decide whether you want to buy shares listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), or simply want Thai-market exposure through a product available in your existing investment account. For direct SET access, the route described by the exchange is a Thai brokerage account. A Thai depositary receipt (DR), by contrast, is a SET-listed instrument in baht that represents a foreign security; it is not a way to own shares in a Thai operating company. SET’s DR overview explains the distinction.

The exchange-wide guide does not establish that a particular broker will accept an applicant living outside Thailand. Ask brokerages directly whether they accept your country of residence and allow remote onboarding before preparing an application.

How to open a Thai brokerage account

SET’s investor guide describes a process that runs through a Thai brokerage firm. Exact eligibility, fees, funding methods, minimums, and available instruments depend on the broker, so obtain current terms from the firm before sending documents or money. Read SET’s stock investment guide.

  1. Check broker eligibility. Use SET’s member-broker information to identify firms, then ask each whether it accepts applicants resident in your country, supports remote account opening, and offers the specific Thai shares or NVDRs you want.
  2. Choose an account type. SET describes cash, prepaid cash-balance, and credit or margin accounts. Ask the broker how each works for a nonresident, including any minimum balance or order size, commissions, margin terms, currency conversion, and funding options.
  3. Submit the application and documents. The SET guide lists a passport, bank-account evidence, and a six-month bank statement for foreign applicants; it also lists a work permit for applicants working in Thailand. The broker must confirm its own current document requirements and whether it needs certified or translated records.
  4. Fund the account and confirm settlement. Ask which currencies and transfer methods are accepted, how conversion is handled, what charges apply, and how the broker processes settlement. SET’s guide describes T+2 settlement for cash-account trades—that is, two business days after the trade date—but confirm the current practice and any instrument-specific arrangements with the broker.
  5. Place an order through the broker. SET describes placing orders through the broker’s online system or with an investment consultant. Confirm the ticker and share line before submitting an order.

Understand local shares, foreign shares, and NVDRs

A company may have different trading lines, and the line you buy affects your rights. SET identifies local shares, foreign shares marked “-F,” and non-voting depository receipts (NVDRs) marked “-R.” Check the security information for the specific company: foreign ownership room, instrument availability, and liquidity can differ by security.

Trading line What it means for an investor Key check
Local shares SET says foreign holders of local shares do not receive dividends or voting rights. Confirm the rights and whether this line suits your purpose. SET share-type information
Foreign shares (-F) SET says foreign shares carry dividend and voting rights. Foreign ownership limits apply. Check current foreign holding information and trading liquidity for the security. SET share-type information
NVDRs (-R) NVDR holders receive financial benefits similar to those of the underlying shares, but do not have voting rights. Check whether an NVDR is available for the company and review current rules. Thai NVDR’s product information

What an NVDR does—and does not—provide

Thai NVDR describes NVDRs as a way to facilitate foreign investment despite foreign ownership limits. They are not voting shares: the holder receives financial benefits similar to those of the underlying share without voting rights. The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says its 2024 rule changes were intended to keep NVDR services aligned with supporting foreign investment and to prevent Thai investors from using them to evade rules. Read the SEC’s explanation of the 2024 NVDR rule changes and check the current status with your broker.

Check costs, funding, and settlement before trading

SET advises investors to ask their brokerage firm about commissions, minimum balances, order sizes, and the settlement process. For an international client, also confirm how to send funds, which currency the account holds, the exchange rate and conversion charges, and how cash proceeds or dividends can be withdrawn. These terms are broker-specific; the SET guide does not establish a universal price or funding arrangement.

If you use a cash account, SET’s trading guide describes settlement as T+2, or two business days after the trade date. This is the guide’s stated timing, not a guarantee for every security or broker arrangement. Confirm the current settlement schedule with the firm before trading.

Know what Thai tax information does—and does not—tell you

SET’s tax page says that individual investors’ capital gains from direct investment in SET and TFEX are tax-exempt in Thailand, and that dividends are generally subject to 10% withholding. These are statements about Thai tax treatment; they do not determine your full tax bill as an international investor. Your tax residence, whether you invest as an individual or entity, treaty eligibility, and the rules in your home country can affect the result. Consult a qualified tax source for your jurisdiction and ask the broker how dividends are paid, what tax statements it provides, and whether it can support treaty documentation. See SET’s tax information.

Pre-trade checklist

  • Confirm the broker accepts clients resident in your country and supports remote onboarding.

  • Compare account terms, fees, funding and currency-conversion methods, minimums, and settlement handling.
  • Review the specific security’s foreign holding information, instrument availability, and liquidity.
  • Understand the rights attached to the line: SET says local shares held by foreigners do not provide dividends or voting rights; -F shares provide both; NVDRs provide financial benefits but no voting rights.
  • Clarify dividend withholding, tax documents, and any treaty paperwork with the broker, then check your home-country obligations separately.
