You can invest in gold by buying bars or coins, purchasing shares in a physically backed exchange-traded product, using a professional vault or gold certificate, or trading futures and options. These routes do not give you the same thing: you might own metal, hold a security tied to bullion, or enter a contract. Compare ownership, custody, costs, liquidity, and risk before choosing. Gold pays no regular income, so returns depend on its price rising; it can also fall in value.
Should you buy gold bars or coins?
Buying bullion gives you direct ownership of physical gold. You can buy investment bars or bullion coins from a bank or dealer, but the purchase price usually includes a premium over the spot price. You also need to account for delivery, storage, insurance, and the price difference between buying and selling.
The World Gold Council describes bullion coins as typically government-issued, often with a face value, and valued mainly for their gold content. It gives a general purity range of 91.67% to 99.99% for coins and 99.5% to 99.99% for bars, which are available in weights from grams to troy ounces. These are broad descriptions, not specifications for every product. Check the item’s weight, fineness, and assay documentation before buying. World Gold Council: Ways to invest in gold.

What to check before buying physical gold
- Your goal: Decide why you want gold and how it fits your broader finances.
- The product: Confirm precisely what you are buying, including weight and fineness.
- The seller: Check credentials, resale arrangements, and any buyback terms.
- The full cost: Add the premium, shipping, insurance, storage, and likely resale spread—not just the quoted price.
The World Gold Council recommends assessing goals, product, seller, and costs when buying online. Its figures show that small bars and coins represented approximately two-thirds of annual gold investment demand and around one quarter of global gold demand over the past decade; the source does not define that decade as a particular calendar-year period. These market statistics describe demand, not the merits or likely returns of an individual purchase. World Gold Council: Ways to invest in gold.

How does a gold ETF work?
A physically backed gold exchange-traded product holds bullion and trades on an exchange, so investors can generally buy and sell shares through a brokerage account rather than handling bars. Its share price usually tracks the underlying gold price, but product expenses and differences in tracking can affect returns. You need to understand the product’s legal structure, custody, liquidity, and redemption rules.
“ETF” is often used loosely. A gold-linked exchange-traded product might be a registered fund, trust, exchange-traded commodity, note, or another structure. Read its current official documents to establish what you actually own and whether, and under what conditions, you can redeem shares for metal.

For example, a 2026 SEC-filed description of SPDR Gold Trust says its shares represent fractional beneficial interests in a trust that holds gold bars and seeks to reflect bullion-price performance less operating expenses. That description applies to this product; it does not establish that all gold products have the same structure or redemption rights. SPDR Gold Trust, 2026 SEC filing.
Do gold ETFs lend their gold?
Joseph Cavatoni, Senior Market Strategist for North America at the World Gold Council, wrote on 17 February 2025: “Let me be crystal clear and upfront—gold ETFs do not lend their gold.” His statement concerns U.S.-listed physically backed gold ETFs; do not assume it describes every gold-linked product or its legal structure. World Gold Council, 17 February 2025.

Can you own gold through a vault?
Internet Investment Gold lets people buy physical gold online, have it stored in a professional vault, and potentially take possession later. Vaulted gold may be owned outright by the customer, while a gold certificate may evidence ownership of metal held in a vault. The label alone does not establish whether the gold is allocated to you or what rights you have if the provider fails; check the contract and custody terms.
- Is the gold allocated or otherwise specifically attributable to you, and what does the title document say?
- Who is the custodian, and what happens to your claim if the provider or custodian fails?
- What are the fees, insurance arrangements, and available audit information?
- Are there minimum amounts, delays, or extra costs for withdrawal or delivery?
What are futures and options on gold?
Futures and options provide contract-based exposure to gold; they are not the same as owning coins, bars, or shares in a bullion-holding trust.

Gold futures
A gold futures contract is a standardized agreement to buy or sell a specified amount and quality of gold at a future date for a stated price. Exchange-traded futures can be used for long or short exposure. Their contract terms, expiration, and any margin requirements matter, so review the exchange and broker’s current specifications before trading.
Gold options
An option gives its holder the right to buy or sell under specified contract terms. Options also have an expiration date and can behave differently from direct ownership of gold. Understand the contract’s terms and potential loss before trading; the relevant details depend on the specific product.

How should you compare the ways to invest in gold?
| Route | What you own | Custody and access | Costs and considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bars or coins | Physical gold | You arrange possession or storage; resale is typically through a dealer or another buyer. | Purchase premium, shipping, storage, insurance, and buy/sell spread; verify product and seller. |
| Physically backed exchange-traded product | Shares or another security; the legal interest depends on the product’s structure. | Held and traded through a brokerage account; redemption rights vary by product. | Product expenses, trading costs, liquidity, tracking, custody, and legal structure. |
| Vaulted gold or certificate | Physical gold ownership or a documented claim, depending on the terms. | A professional vault or provider holds the metal; possession and withdrawal terms vary. | Provider and vault fees, insurance, audit information, counterparty risk, and delivery terms. |
| Futures or options | A contract, not bullion ownership. | Accessed through a broker or exchange; contract terms and expiration apply. | Contract-specific trading costs and requirements; understand the mechanics and possible losses. |
Before committing, compare the route against your needs in these areas:
- Ownership: Determine whether you would own identified or allocated metal, a beneficial interest in a trust, another security, a certificate, or a derivative contract.
- Custody: Consider the responsibilities of self-storage and insurance alongside reliance on a vault, custodian, or brokerage account.
- Total cost: Include premiums, buy/sell spreads, shipping, insurance, storage or vault fees, product expenses, brokerage commissions, and applicable taxes. Confirm current provider terms.
- Liquidity and access: Consider dealer resale, exchange trading and spreads, redemption rules, or contract liquidity and expiry.
- Risk and complexity: Account for price declines, product tracking, custody or counterparty exposure, and any contract mechanics or leverage that apply.
- Portfolio role: Gold may be used as one part of a diversified portfolio, but diversification does not prevent losses or guarantee that gold will offset losses elsewhere.
What are the U.S. tax and IRA considerations?
The following tax information is specific to the United States and is general, not individualized tax advice. IRS Publication 550 (2025) discusses gains or losses on gold bullion and coins held for more than one year as collectibles. Collectibles gains are included in the 28% rate-gain category, which is a maximum rate category—not a claim that every investor pays 28%. The result depends on the facts, holding period, instrument structure, other income, and applicable law. Do not assume a gold ETF or other product receives the same treatment as bullion; check its current prospectus and consult a tax professional. IRS Publication 550 (2025).
IRS rules also provide a narrow exception under which certain qualifying gold, silver, and platinum coins and bullion that meet statutory fineness conditions may be held in some individually directed qualified plans if a bank or approved non-bank trustee keeps physical possession. The IRS explains that an account’s acquisition of a collectible can be treated as a distribution. This does not mean every IRA can hold any bullion directly or that an account holder can personally store it. IRS Topic No. 404: Dividends and Other Distributions.

What do recent gold ETF flows tell you?
The World Gold Council reported US$3 billion in global gold ETF net inflows in July 2026. In that month, it also reported assets under management rising 1% to US$530 billion and total holdings increasing by 23 tonnes to 4,068 tonnes at the end of July. These are month-specific industry figures, not evidence of future returns or an investment recommendation. World Gold Council: Gold ETF holdings and flows.
