You can invest in Brazilian-listed stocks without living in Brazil if a brokerage that accepts residents of your country offers access to B3, Brazil’s stock exchange. B3 describes an international-broker route in which you fund your brokerage account and, when needed, convert money to Brazilian reais through the broker. Access is not universal: confirm country eligibility, account permissions, available shares, costs and tax treatment before funding or trading.
Choose the access route that fits your account
B3’s current individual-investor information describes access through an international brokerage house, while Brazilian government and market sources also describe a formal framework for nonresident investors. These are not interchangeable checklists. Ask the prospective broker which route it offers and which registration or representation obligations apply to your account.
| Route | How access is arranged | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| International brokerage | Open or use an eligible international brokerage account, enable Brazil if required, and fund and trade through that account. B3 says the broker can handle conversion to BRL. | Country eligibility, account permissions, supported B3-listed assets, current fees, settlement, custody, income handling and withdrawals. B3 names Interactive Brokers (IBKR) as an example, not as a guarantee of eligibility or an endorsement. |
| Traditional registered nonresident framework | Follow the applicable Brazilian nonresident registration process, including required representation and intermediary arrangements. | Which investor category applies, whether prior CVM registration is required, and which representative, tax representative, custodian or local broker arrangements apply. The Brazilian government says natural-person nonresidents are exempt from the custody-service requirement it describes. |
How to invest through an international brokerage
- Check that the broker accepts residents of your country. B3 says access depends on the broker’s policy and the rules in the investor’s country. Its mention of IBKR is an example only; it does not establish that the broker accepts every country or account type.
- Verify B3 permissions and the exact shares you want. Ask whether you must enable the Brazilian market and whether the specific cash-equity ticker is supported. A broker’s access to B3 does not mean every B3 product is available. B3’s access information distinguishes products currently available from others described as forthcoming.
- Get the complete, current cost schedule. Ask for brokerage commissions, exchange and clearing fees, currency-conversion spreads or charges, account or custody fees, and market-data fees. B3 directs investors to check broker charges and its fee schedule, but does not provide a broker-by-broker total-cost comparison.
- Confirm how funding and currency conversion work. B3 says an investor can fund the international brokerage account in a supported currency and convert to Brazilian reais through the brokerage house when needed. Compare the conversion rate and charges; the shares trade in BRL, so changes in the real against your home currency also affect your return when measured in that currency.
- Clarify the account’s operating details before placing an order. Ask the broker how trades settle, where shares are held, how dividends and other income are processed, what statements are provided, and how withdrawals or repatriation work. These details depend on the broker and account; B3’s general access description does not settle them.
What the traditional nonresident route involves
Brazilian government investor information describes a framework under CMN 4,373/2014 with investor categories that include an own-account holder, a collective-account holder and a participant in a collective account. The government portal says prior CVM registration and representation arrangements are required within the applicable framework. Its steps page also says a natural-person nonresident is exempt from the custody-service requirement described there.
B3’s traditional market-access guidance lists a legal representative, tax representative and custodian, followed by registration and selection of a local broker. B3’s broader nonresident overview and the CVM service information also describe the regulated registration framework. Because B3 separately describes a newer simplified individual channel through international brokers, do not assume every role in the traditional checklist applies to an account using that newer channel. Get the broker’s answer in writing, including which framework it uses and who handles any required filings or representation.

Understand Brazilian tax and your home-country obligations
B3’s published tax summary distinguishes nonresident investors by jurisdiction and type of income. Under the framework summarized there, nonresidents outside jurisdictions that do not tax income or tax it below 20% are shown as exempt from Brazilian tax on equity capital gains and distributed profits or dividends. For investors from jurisdictions in that low-tax category, B3 lists a 15% tax on net capital gains and an exemption for distributed profits or dividends. These are B3’s summarized Brazilian treatments, not a complete tax determination for an individual investor.
Other income categories can have different treatment; B3 lists interest on shareholders’ equity separately. Your country of tax residence may also tax income or gains and may impose foreign-account or information-reporting requirements. The Brazilian sources do not determine those home-country liabilities. Before investing, check the rules for your actual residence, tax status, account structure and instrument with a qualified tax adviser or the relevant tax authority.
