To buy Argentine-listed construction-related shares directly from outside Argentina, first confirm that a currently authorized Argentine Settlement and Clearing Agent (ALyC) will accept clients resident in your country and can trade the shares you want. BYMA says investors must open an account with an ALyC to buy shares on its market; that does not guarantee that any particular agent accepts nonresident clients. Before funding an account, verify its eligibility, documentation, transfer, custody, fee, withdrawal and tax terms.

Choose what kind of construction exposure you mean

“Construction stocks” can mean businesses that make building materials, companies that perform construction or engineering work, homebuilders, or broader property-related businesses. BYMA’s S&P/BYMA Construcción index provides a screening framework spanning local shares classified in construction materials and products, construction and engineering, homebuilding and related GICS industries. BYMA describes the index as float-adjusted market-cap weighted, but the available information here does not establish current constituents or weights. Treat the index as a way to define a search, not as proof that a particular company belongs to it today or as a guarantee of diversification. See BYMA Data Products for its market-data products, and verify any current index details with BYMA.

Understand the route to a local share

BYMA’s investor guidance says a person buying shares must first open a client account with a Settlement and Clearing Agent (ALyC), the intermediary for buying shares on the market. BYMA also states that only shares of public companies listed in Argentina after an initial public offering can trade on BYMA. These rules describe the local-market route; they do not establish that every ALyC serves overseas residents or that a specific share is currently available through one.

A CEDEAR is not the same instrument as an Argentine company’s local share. BYMA describes CEDEARs as receipts representing foreign assets that are not listed in Argentina. A CEDEAR therefore does not, by that definition, give you direct ownership exposure through the Argentine-listed share you are researching. Check the instrument’s listing, underlying asset and terms rather than relying on a ticker or the word “depositary.”

Route What it represents What to verify
Argentine-listed share A share in a public company listed in Argentina and traded on BYMA, subject to BYMA’s listing and trading requirements. Whether an ALyC accepts clients resident in your country and can trade that share class for you.
CEDEAR A receipt representing a foreign asset that is not listed in Argentina, as described by BYMA. The receipt’s underlying asset and terms; it is not a direct route to an Argentine company’s local share under BYMA’s definition.

Argentina’s CNV rules address foreign issuers’ public offerings and a special double-listing route. They are regulatory background, not evidence that an overseas retail investor can bypass an ALyC or that a particular account is eligible. Consult the CNV regulations for foreign issuers and CEDEAR/CEVA for the applicable rules.

Use a screening list carefully

BYMA’s Sustainability Index constituent list includes Holcim Argentina S.A., Loma Negra C.I.A.S.A., IRSA Inversiones y Representaciones S.A. and Ternium Argentina S.A. These names are possible starting points for checking issuer disclosures, not a construction-only list or a recommendation. Their inclusion in that index does not establish that each is a pure-play builder or materials producer, nor does it establish current construction-index membership. Consult the BYMA Sustainability Index, then check current issuer disclosures and market information before drawing conclusions.

Follow this access and research workflow

  1. Define the exposure. Decide whether you want materials, construction and engineering, homebuilding, or a broader property-related business. This affects which companies belong on your initial list.
  2. Screen, then verify. Use the S&P/BYMA Construcción categories as a framework, then confirm current constituents, classifications, listing status and share classes through current BYMA and company information. Do not assume a past or broad-sector list is current.
  3. Ask an authorized ALyC about overseas eligibility. Confirm that it is currently authorized and explicitly accepts clients resident in your jurisdiction. Ask whether it can trade the specific Argentine-listed shares and share classes you are considering. BYMA’s New Investor guidance explains the local intermediary requirement.
  4. Get account and transaction terms in writing before transferring funds. Ask which identity and tax documents are required; which funding currencies and transfer methods are accepted; whether there are minimums or fees; how custody and settlement work; and how dividends, currency conversion, withdrawals and account closure are handled. These details are intermediary- and investor-specific and are not settled by the general BYMA account requirement.
  5. Check tax and cross-border rules for your circumstances. Ask a qualified tax professional familiar with your country of residence and the relevant Argentine rules about taxation, withholding, reporting and any repatriation requirements. Do not assume the treatment of a local share is the same as that of a foreign security or receipt.
  6. Compare issuers using current disclosures and market data. Review each company’s business segments, financial statements and share information before deciding whether its exposure matches your objective. BYMA provides data products; the information available here does not support a current valuation comparison or ranking.

  • Business exposure: How much of the reported business is actually tied to construction, building materials, engineering, housing or property? Check segment disclosures instead of assuming the company is a pure play.
  • Trading access: Is the share currently listed and available through the ALyC serving your jurisdiction? Check the share class, trading liquidity and instrument terms.
  • Currency exposure: What are the company’s revenue and cost exposures to Argentina and foreign currencies, and how might those differ from your own spending currency?
  • Financial capacity: Review leverage, cash generation and capital needs in current filings; a sector label alone says nothing about a company’s ability to fund its business.
  • Governance and disclosure: Examine the company’s disclosures and governance information, and whether you can obtain the records needed to understand the investment.

What to confirm before investing

  • The intermediary is currently authorized and serves residents of your country.
  • The exact local share and share class are available for trading through that intermediary.
  • You understand the account’s funding, custody, settlement, fee, dividend, conversion and withdrawal terms.
  • You have checked applicable tax, reporting, withholding and repatriation requirements with a qualified professional.
  • Your decision is based on current issuer filings and market information, not on index membership or an example list alone.
