To introduce girls to STEAM careers, give them a real problem to solve, let them design and test their own ideas, and connect the work to people who use those skills. A project is a stronger starting point when it is paired with an inclusive team experience, women role models, and a clear next step—not treated as a one-time demonstration.
Why hands-on projects help make STEAM careers visible
Building, testing, and revising something makes technical work tangible. It also gives girls room to make decisions and explain their reasoning, rather than simply watch an adult demonstrate a result. The National Girls Collaborative Project’s Brite practices bring hands-on activities together with community-building and diverse women role models as approaches to girls’ STEM identity development.
Give the project a recognizable purpose. NGCP reports that 86% of girls and young women want careers where they can help others; that figure is attributed to NGCP’s 2026 summary, not a guarantee about any individual learner. A project connected to a need people care about can help show how technical skills contribute to community benefit. (The source uses STEM terminology; it does not establish a separate statistic for STEAM.)

Women represent 35% of the STEM workforce and hold 22% of global AI roles, according to NGCP’s 2026 summary. UNESCO reports that women represent 35% of STEM graduates in 2026. These figures describe different populations and should not be treated as interchangeable. They offer context for why learners benefit from seeing varied routes into technical fields, not a prediction of what any participant will choose.

Use a project sequence that connects making to careers
The following sequence is a practical synthesis of guidance from NGCP and UCL, not a validated curriculum. Adapt the challenge, materials, pace, and support to the learners and setting.
- Start with a question tied to a real need. Ask learners to notice a problem at home, school, or in their community. For example: What would make a study space more comfortable? How could a small garden use water more carefully? These are example prompts, not activities evaluated by the organizations cited here.
- Let teams design, build, test, and revise. Offer age-appropriate materials, such as household items or a kit selected for the activity. Invite more than one solution and ask what the test results suggest. UCL’s account of its engineering outreach emphasizes authentic, open-ended projects where young people experiment and see how engineering is applied in the real world.
- Name the STEAM skills as they appear. Ask where learners used measurement, materials, computing, design, communication, or artistic choices. Link the project to occupations it genuinely reflects—for instance, engineering, product design, environmental science, computing, or research—without suggesting that every project leads to every field.
- Bring in a relatable professional. Invite a woman working in a relevant field, a university student, or an educator to discuss an ordinary work problem, her route into the field, and what she learned from setbacks. Leave time for learners’ questions; do not ask one guest to represent every woman in a profession.
- Close with reflection and a next step. Ask what each learner contributed, what they would change, and which skill or career they want to explore next. If possible, follow up with another project or mentor contact so career exposure continues beyond one event.
NGCP’s Brite materials are aimed at middle- and high-school-age girls in online and hybrid settings. UCL’s account describes sustained engineering engagement with pupils across primary and secondary education, including children as young as four. Those contexts are not interchangeable: choose an age-appropriate challenge and provide the level of structure learners need.

Make participation inclusive in practice
Girls’ participation is not a question of ability. UNESCO identifies socialization, stereotypes, learning materials, and school environments among influences on girls’ participation and choices in STEM. Its 2026 article quotes biology and chemistry teacher Edinah Nyakondi of St. Clare Girls Secondary School in Nyamira County, Kenya, describing lack of confidence—not lack of ability—as an obstacle among her learners.

Rotate roles where useful, and make sure examples show varied people doing varied kinds of technical work. UCL describes an intersectional approach that considers differences in ability and understanding, combines open-ended tasks with relatable role models, and supports teachers with training and classroom resources. That is UCL’s account of its own program approach, not proof that a particular activity guarantees an outcome.

Choose a project that fits your learners and setting
Before settling on an activity, compare the practical fit as well as the topic. These are useful planning questions, not a standardized scoring rubric.
- Age and prerequisites: Can learners take part with the knowledge and support they already have?
- Materials, time, and space: What is needed, and can the project be completed in the time and setting available? Provide a low-cost alternative where possible.
- Meaningful choices: Can learners make real design decisions, test ideas, and revise them, or is there only one prescribed result?
- Purpose and career connection: Does the challenge connect to a problem people recognize, and can you explain which skills and careers it genuinely involves?
- Access and representation: Can learners with different abilities and levels of prior experience participate? Do the examples and guest voices show more than one pathway?
- Follow-up: Is an educator or mentor available to help learners explore another project, question, or contact afterward?
Keep the career conversation open-ended
Career exposure works best when it reveals possibilities rather than prescribing a destination. UNESCO’s 2017 report summary describes social and educational influences on girls’ STEM participation; its historical enrollment figures should not be read as current. In a 2026 UNESCO feature, Nyakondi recalled: “My teachers served as a role model for me, which moved and motivated me to join the profession and follow in their footsteps.” A role model can make a pathway imaginable, while the project gives learners something concrete to ask about.

UCL describes sustained engagement, teacher support, and inclusive design as elements of its 50:50 strategy. A single event can begin a conversation, but the sources do not establish that any one project guarantees a career choice or long-term workforce outcome.
