For a SaaS serving Cameroon, the hardest part of payments may be confirming merchant eligibility, onboarding, and settlement—not writing the API call. You can integrate directly with MTN Payments or Orange Money Web Payment, or use a unified API or hosted checkout to consolidate payment methods. Before choosing, verify that the route is available to your business in Cameroon and establish its fees, settlement terms, and production behavior.

Choose between direct operator APIs and a unified checkout

The right route depends on what you need to control and what you can verify with a provider. Direct integrations mean working with each operator separately; a unified provider may bring several methods behind one integration, but adds another vendor whose coverage and operations you must check.

Route What the documentation establishes What to verify
MTN Payments V1 MTN lists Cameroon as a supported country. Its API documentation describes merchant and customer payments, status queries, payment history, and reversals, with OAuth 2.0 bearer authentication. MTN Payments V1 documentation Whether your business qualifies, how to obtain production access, and the applicable fees and settlement terms. Country listing alone does not confirm individual merchant approval.
Orange Money Web Payment / M Payment Orange documents the service for registered merchants in Cameroon, with API testing before commercial launch. Its customer flow requires an active Orange Money account and a one-time password generated through Orange Money USSD. Orange Money Web Payment documentation Registration, local compliance documents, subscription, production approval, and the customer experience when leaving your SaaS checkout to request and enter an OTP.
ElyonPay unified integration Its documentation claims Cameroon Mobile Money coverage for MTN and Orange, XAF support, SDKs, a sandbox, payment links, direct-payment patterns, and optional webhooks. ElyonPay documentation Confirm the Cameroon route is live for your business category, what the production flow looks like, and the provider’s commercial, security, and support terms.
Nkap Pay hosted checkout Its documentation lists XAF for Cameroon, Mobile Money, a hosted payment page, status retrieval, and signed webhook handling. It says payment mode or provider can vary by country configuration. Nkap Pay documentation Confirm the actual methods and modes enabled for your merchant account. Build around the mode returned by the service instead of assuming one in advance.

These are documented capabilities, not a complete comparison of commercial terms or independent evidence of service reliability. Public materials reviewed do not establish comparable provider fees, settlement timelines, or onboarding schedules.

Resolve merchant access and money movement before coding

Ask each prospective provider for written answers tied to your company, business category, and Cameroon operations. A technically documented API is not useful if your account cannot access it in production or its settlement arrangement does not fit your business.

Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.

  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
  • Eligibility and onboarding: Which legal entity can apply? What local registration and compliance documents are required? Is the route currently available to your business category, and what approvals are needed for production?
  • Payment coverage: Which methods are enabled in Cameroon for your account? Are MTN and Orange both available? Is the charge in XAF, and can the customer complete payment through the expected device and account flow?
  • Fees and settlement: Request the full fee schedule, settlement currency and destination, timing, limits, and any applicable taxes. Get the terms in writing rather than inferring them from API documentation.
  • Failures and disputes: Ask how failed, pending, reversed, and refunded payments are represented; what refund or reversal operations are supported; and how you obtain a transaction-level reconciliation record.
  • Operations and security: Establish support channels and response expectations, service-status visibility, credential handling, webhook-signing details, and what evidence the provider supplies about compliance and security.

Cameroon’s payment environment has regional and regulatory context, but market figures should not be mistaken for a guide to provider selection. GSMA’s 2026 report says BEAC applies uniform regulation across CEMAC and cites BEAC reports for the finding that Cameroon accounted for 63% of CEMAC mobile-money transactions, based on underlying 2022 and 2023 data. The report also says public market-share and licensing information is limited; that 63% figure is a share of regional transaction volume, not a provider’s market share. Design the integration around payment state, not just the happy path

Whether you use a direct API or hosted checkout, your SaaS should treat a customer’s return to your site and a confirmed payment as separate events. A redirect or user message is not, by itself, a reliable record that money settled. Use the provider’s documented status mechanism and authenticated server-side notifications where available.

  1. Create an internal payment record. Assign a unique order or invoice reference, record the amount and currency, and start with a pending state before sending the customer to the provider or initiating a request.
  2. Initiate payment using the enabled flow. For a hosted checkout, follow the returned checkout details. For a direct API, use the provider’s authentication and request format. If country configuration determines the payment mode, use the mode returned by the service rather than hard-coding it.
  3. Handle the customer journey. Show clear pending instructions and a way to return to the SaaS. For Orange Money Web Payment, account for the documented USSD-generated OTP step and the need for an active Orange Money account.
  4. Verify the outcome server-side. Query transaction status or validate the provider’s signed webhook according to its documentation. Check the signature before processing an event, and match the event to your own payment reference and amount.
  5. Make processing idempotent. Providers may retry notifications, and customers may refresh or revisit checkout. Ensure duplicate events cannot grant a subscription twice or create duplicate invoices.
  6. Reconcile and handle exceptions. Track pending and failed payments, expose a support path for unresolved transactions, and compare provider transaction records with your internal ledger. Test refund, reversal, and correction procedures that your chosen route actually supports.

Test production-like cases before launch

Use the sandbox to exercise more than a successful payment. Sandbox behavior may not prove that production credentials, merchant configuration, or settlement will work the same way, so confirm the live setup with the provider before enabling customers.

  • Successful payment and the expected final status.
  • Customer cancellation, invalid or expired OTP where applicable, and provider-declined payment.
  • Slow response, timeout, and a customer returning before the payment status is final.
  • Duplicate, delayed, and out-of-order webhook notifications, including rejection of an invalid signature.
  • Status lookup after a lost browser redirect or a temporarily unavailable callback.
  • Reversal or refund handling and transaction reconciliation, where supported.

Keep secrets on the server, log provider references and state transitions without exposing sensitive credentials, and alert on payments that remain pending beyond your expected resolution window. Start with a controlled launch and monitor real transaction outcomes before relying on the integration for subscription access or automated renewals.

Make the decision with evidence from your own account

There is no public basis here for declaring one of these options universally best for Cameroon. Request account-specific confirmation of eligibility, enabled methods, pricing, settlement, support, and production access from each provider you are considering. Then compare the cost of maintaining separate operator integrations with the control and operational dependency of a unified checkout, and choose the option whose verified terms and payment-state behavior fit your SaaS.
