Protect a valuable game collection by documenting each item, establishing an appropriate valuation with a qualified appraiser or insurer, checking the exact policy terms, and storing the objects in stable, secure conditions. A stated value or appraisal does not by itself guarantee a particular claim payment: the policy’s valuation method, limits, deductibles, exclusions, and documentation requirements determine what protection applies.
1. Inventory the collection before choosing coverage
A useful inventory makes it easier to discuss coverage and support a claim. Record each game, console, accessory, or related collectible separately, and keep the records backed up in a secure location apart from the collection.
- Identity: Exact title or item description, edition, region, platform, and identifying details where applicable.
- Condition: Current condition and notable wear. Photograph each item from multiple angles; for sealed or graded pieces, clearly document the packaging and condition.
- Purchase and provenance: Purchase date and price if known, and information about the item’s history or origin.
- Supporting documents: Receipts, authenticity records, and prior appraisals.
- Location: Where the item is currently stored.
Update the inventory when items enter or leave the collection. Ask the insurer whether it requires or accepts particular photographs, grades, or authentication records; the sources do not establish a universal grading or authentication standard for video game insurance.

2. Establish what the items are worth
Market value and replacement value answer different questions. State Farm describes market value as what an item might sell for between a willing buyer and seller in an appropriate market. Replacement value generally concerns the cost to replace an item with one of comparable kind and quality. Ask both the appraiser and insurer which valuation basis is relevant to the policy and how a claim would be settled. Neither an appraisal nor a requested insurance amount guarantees payment of that amount.

Factors that can affect value include condition, rarity, authenticity, provenance, demand, and comparable sales. Asking prices are not necessarily sale prices. For a formal valuation, consider a qualified professional with relevant experience who will explain the methodology, disclose fees, and provide written documentation. See State Farm’s guidance on appraising collectibles.
3. Compare your existing policy with specialist coverage
Start with your homeowners or renters insurer. Such policies may provide some protection for collectibles, but the actual contract controls: limits, deductibles, covered causes of loss, and restrictions on particular property can all matter. Compare that wording with any specialist policy you are considering, rather than assuming either type automatically covers the collection as you expect. State Farm discusses these policy considerations in its collectibles insurance overview.

Use the following questions when reviewing policy documents or speaking with an insurer. The answers depend on the specific contract and your circumstances.
- Must individual items or sets be scheduled? Are appraisals required, and at what threshold?
- Does the policy use blanket coverage, scheduled coverage, or both?
- What settlement basis applies: agreed value, market value, replacement value, or another policy-defined method?
- What deductibles, exclusions, sublimits, or covered-cause restrictions apply?
- Does coverage apply while items are in transit or on exhibition?
- How are newly acquired items treated, and when must you report them?
- Are all storage locations covered, including an off-site or public-storage facility?
- What inventory, photographs, receipts, or other records must you provide for a claim?
What a specialist insurer says about video game collections
Collectibles Insurance Services advertises insurance for video game collections. Its own pages list causes including accidental breakage, burglary, fire, certain flood losses, mail loss, natural disasters, and theft, subject to exclusions and policy terms. The provider describes transit cover subject to a sublimit, exhibition coverage subject to policy limits, and optional public-storage insurance. It says most items do not need a schedule or appraisal, while individual items or sets over $25,000 must be scheduled. These are statements about that provider’s offering, not industry-wide rules. Confirm current terms, geography, eligibility, exclusions, sublimits, and price directly in the applicable policy documents. See its video game insurance page and FAQ.

Collectibles Insurance Services states: “Unlike the average homeowners policy, we do not require a schedule or appraisal for most items; however, you are responsible for maintaining your own inventory of your video game collection for insurance purposes (in the event of loss).” This describes that insurer’s offering; it is not a general rule for other policies.
Why settlement wording matters
Insurers can describe settlement approaches differently. Chubb, for example, says its agreed-value feature pays 100 percent of agreed value for covered total losses and offers blanket or scheduled approaches. That is an example of one provider’s stated terms, not a promise applicable to other insurers or losses. Read the policy’s definitions and settlement provisions; see Chubb’s explanation of collections insurance.

4. Store collectibles to limit deterioration and loss
Control environmental exposure
Choose a location with stable conditions, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and major temperature swings. Basements, attics, and garages may expose items to deteriorating conditions. Consider a display case that reduces UV exposure and archival-quality packaging suited to the object. Do not assume a case or packing material is protective or archival unless its manufacturer’s documentation supports that claim.
Climate-controlled storage may be worth considering for particularly valuable or vulnerable collections, but there is no universal temperature or humidity target established here for game boxes, cartridges, discs, or electronics. For unusual materials or conservation-grade needs, consult a qualified preservation specialist. The storage guidance is discussed in Collectibles Insurance Services’ collectibles storage article.

Assess security and confirm the covered location
Environmental control is only part of storage. At home, assess locks, alarms, fire protection, and how visible the collection is. For off-site storage, review who can access the facility and what monitoring is in place. Give the insurer the actual storage address and confirm that the policy covers it; an endorsement or optional coverage may be necessary for public storage.
5. Treat the physical object and digital preservation separately
Protecting a cartridge, disc, box, or console does not necessarily preserve the software or data it contains. The Strong National Museum of Play’s Digital Preservation Handbook describes its International Center for the History of Electronic Games collection as holding more than 45,000 individual components. It identifies 25,000 artifacts as imperiled, including games created before 2005 on at-risk media, and describes data migration as necessary for those media. These figures concern the museum’s own holdings and assessment; they are not estimates for all games or a schedule for private collectors. The handbook’s publication date is not explicit in the accessed text. Read The Strong’s Digital Preservation Handbook.
For a private collection, consider separately whether important saves, data, or software access have a preservation plan. Rights and rules can depend on the activity and jurisdiction; the cited preservation source does not establish what copying or modifying a particular copyrighted game permits.
