VSCodium uses the Open VSX Registry as its preset extension gallery, not Microsoft’s Visual Studio Marketplace. Search Open VSX first. If the extension is not listed, obtain a publisher-authorized .vsix package and install it from VSCodium’s Extensions view or with codium --install-extension /path/to/extension.vsix.
Installing a VSIX and confirming that it works are separate steps. A package can install successfully yet be incompatible with VSCodium, your operating system, your editor version, or its license. In particular, some proprietary Microsoft debugging and remote-development extensions are restricted to the official Visual Studio Code build.
Why an extension is missing in VSCodium
VSCodium is a community-built distribution of the VS Code editor. Its built-in gallery is Open VSX, an independent registry. As VSCodium project documentation puts it, “As noted above, the Open VSX Registry is the pre-set extension gallery in VSCodium.” Open VSX does not necessarily contain every extension published in Microsoft’s Visual Studio Marketplace, so a search that succeeds in VS Code can return no result in VSCodium.

That absence does not automatically mean the extension cannot be used. The publisher may distribute a signed or otherwise official VSIX from its source repository, release page, or another channel it controls. Conversely, finding a downloadable VSIX does not prove that the package is authorized for VSCodium or that it will run there. Treat discovery, authorization, compatibility, and update support as four separate checks.

Choose the right installation route

Search Open VSX first

Open VSCodium.

Select the Extensions icon in the Activity Bar, or open the Extensions view from the application menu.

Search by the exact extension name, then try the publisher name or identifier. Check the publisher shown on the result rather than installing a similarly named package.

Open the extension’s details page and verify its supported VSCodium/VS Code engine range, operating-system support, permissions, and recent release date.

Select Install if the listing is the publisher’s intended package. After installation, reload VSCodium if prompted and check that the extension appears under Installed.
If the result is missing, outdated, or published by an unexpected account, do not immediately download a random copy from a file-sharing site. Continue with the publisher-authorized distribution checks below.
Find an authorized VSIX when Open VSX has no listing
Check the publisher’s own release channel
Start at the extension publisher’s source repository or official release page. Look for a release asset ending in .vsix, installation instructions that explicitly mention VSCodium, or a statement identifying the package as suitable for VS Code-compatible editors. Prefer a package hosted by the publisher or a source the publisher explicitly identifies. A third-party mirror should be treated as untrusted unless the publisher documents it.
Verify the package before downloading
- Publisher identity: Match the repository owner, signing information, and extension identifier with the publisher’s documentation.
- Version and engine: Confirm that the release supports your VSCodium version and its embedded VS Code engine.
- Platform: Check whether the extension includes binaries for your operating system and CPU architecture. Some extensions are JavaScript-only; others depend on native components.
- License: Read the extension license and any product-specific terms. A package being technically installable is not permission to use it in every editor.
- Integrity: If the publisher supplies a checksum or signature, verify it before installation. Keep the downloaded file until you have confirmed the installed version.
- Release notes: Look for known restrictions, required companion software, minimum editor versions, or notes that limit use to the official Visual Studio Code build.
Ask for an Open VSX publication when appropriate
VSCodium’s guidance identifies three legitimate ways to improve availability: ask the maintainer to publish the extension to Open VSX, request publication through the VSCodium project, or use an authorized VSIX release from the extension’s source. The first two routes are preferable for teams that need normal discovery and update handling. They do not create an entitlement to copy a package when the publisher’s license forbids redistribution.

Open VSCodium’s Extensions view.

Open the Extensions view command menu. Depending on the build and layout, this is the ellipsis menu near the Extensions heading.

Choose Install from VSIX…. You can also open the Command Palette and run Extensions: Install from VSIX.

Select the downloaded file and confirm the installation. VSCodium may display publisher or trust information; read it before accepting.

Reload the window if VSCodium requests it. Open the Installed section, select the extension, and confirm the installed version and publisher.

Run a small feature check—for example, open a supported project type or invoke the extension’s documented command—before relying on it for production work.
If VSCodium reports that the file is invalid, confirm that it is a complete VSIX archive rather than a source-code ZIP, that the download finished, and that the file extension was not changed by a browser or mail system.
Install a VSIX from the command line
For repeatable setup, scripts, remote machines, or headless administration, use the VSCodium command-line executable:

codium --install-extension "/home/alex/Downloads/example-extension-1.2.3.vsix"On Windows, use the path syntax accepted by your shell:
codium --install-extension "C:UsersAlexDownloadsexample-extension-1.2.3.vsix"The command should report that the extension was installed or already present. Start or reload VSCodium, then verify the extension in the Installed list. If the codium command is not found, launch the executable by its full path or add VSCodium’s command-line launcher to your PATH; the exact path depends on how VSCodium was installed.
To remove an extension later, use its publisher-qualified identifier with the command-line uninstall option shown by your VSCodium build, or select the extension in the Installed list and choose the gear menu followed by Uninstall. Keep the original VSIX and version details if you may need to reproduce the setup.

VSIX is a packaging format, not a compatibility guarantee. VSCodium documents that some proprietary extensions work only with the official Visual Studio Code build. It specifically calls out Microsoft’s C# debugger and the Windows debugger included with its C++ extension as restrictively licensed for the official build. Some Remote Development extensions may also require that build, and an extension can be hard-coded to check for it.
Read the extension’s engine and platform requirements
- Open the extension manifest or release notes and check the declared VS Code engine range.
- Compare that range with the version shown in VSCodium’s Help or About dialog.
- Confirm support for your operating system, architecture, and any required runtime, SDK, compiler, container engine, or server.
- Check whether the extension uses native binaries that must be downloaded separately for your platform.
Recognize signs of an editor restriction
An extension may install but fail when activated, display a message that it requires Visual Studio Code, omit commands, or repeatedly disable itself. Those symptoms can reflect a deliberate product check or license restriction rather than a damaged download. Do not try to bypass such a check by editing the package, changing product metadata, or using an unofficial marketplace mirror. Instead, use an alternative extension whose license supports VSCodium, ask the publisher for an approved build, or use the official editor where the license requires it.
Test the feature that matters
Activation alone is not enough. Open a project of the relevant language or framework, run the extension’s documented command, and check its output panel or logs for errors. For a debugger, verify that it can launch and attach to a small test program. For a remote-development tool, confirm that the remote connection and required server component work. Keep test projects and credentials separate from production until the extension passes these checks.
Understand Marketplace terms and licensing
VSCodium’s documentation summarizes Microsoft’s position that Marketplace offerings are intended for Visual Studio products and services and may only be installed and used with those products and services. It also notes restrictions on use of the Marketplace by other products and on redistribution of Marketplace VSIX files.

The editor accepting the archive only proves that the file matches the package format. It does not grant a license, validate the source, or override an extension’s product restriction. Use the publisher’s own distribution channel and follow the applicable license. If the publisher says a package is for the official Visual Studio Code build only, respect that limitation.

Microsoft’s VS Code documentation describes publisher trust and Marketplace protections for extensions installed through its own product. Those assurances should not be generalized to a VSIX obtained elsewhere. For a separately downloaded package, evaluate the publisher, source, integrity information, requested permissions, and update process yourself.
Configure another gallery only when you have approved endpoints
VSCodium supports configuring a gallery through environment variables or a custom product.json in the user configuration directory. This is intended for an organization or advanced user who operates or has been given access to a compatible gallery service. It is not a generic switch for replacing Open VSX with Microsoft’s Marketplace.
Required gallery settings
The documented environment-variable approach requires all of these values:
VSCODE_GALLERY_SERVICE_URLVSCODE_GALLERY_ITEM_URLVSCODE_GALLERY_EXTENSION_URL_TEMPLATE
The equivalent product.json configuration also needs service, item, and extension URL fields. The URLs must belong to a gallery that implements the APIs VSCodium expects. A single web page, download directory, or guessed endpoint is not sufficient.
When a custom gallery makes sense
- Your company hosts a private registry and controls its extension packages.
- You need an internal approval process, curated versions, or offline distribution.
- The gallery administrator has supplied the exact endpoints and authentication requirements.
Ask the administrator how updates, signatures, access control, and rollback work before changing the configuration. Keep a record of the original Open VSX settings so you can restore them if the custom service is unavailable.

“Install from VSIX” is missing
Open the Extensions view command menu rather than the general application menu, or use the Command Palette and search for Extensions: Install from VSIX. If the command is still absent, update VSCodium to a supported release or check whether an organizational policy disables extension installation.
The VSIX installs but the extension does not appear
Reload the window and inspect the Installed list. Verify that you used the same VSCodium profile or user-data directory in which you are looking. A command-line installation can target a different executable or profile if multiple VSCodium builds are installed.
The extension is disabled after installation
Open the extension details page and read the disable reason. Common causes include an unsupported engine version, an unsupported operating system, a missing dependency, or a product-build check. Install a compatible release only when the publisher provides one; do not force activation by altering the package.

Native components fail to start
Check the extension’s output and log panels for missing libraries, permissions, architecture mismatches, or blocked downloads. Install the runtime or system dependency specified by the publisher, then restart VSCodium. If the extension bundles a server component, verify that the server version matches the client extension.
The extension works but never updates
That is expected for many VSIX installations: VS Code documentation states that automatic updates are disabled by default for extensions installed from a VSIX. Subscribe to the publisher’s release notifications, periodically compare the installed version with the official release channel, and repeat the verification process before installing a newer package.
The download is rejected or appears corrupted
Download the file again from the publisher’s documented source, compare its checksum when available, and make sure a proxy, antivirus product, or browser has not replaced the archive with an HTML error page. A valid VSIX is an archive with the extension’s package metadata; a source ZIP is not interchangeable with it.

Use this security checklist for every manual install
- Obtain the file from the publisher or a source the publisher explicitly authorizes.
- Confirm the publisher name, extension identifier, version, license, and release notes.
- Verify a supplied checksum or signature before opening the package.
- Review requested permissions and whether the extension executes native code or downloads additional components.
- Install first in a disposable profile or test machine when the source is new to you.
- Do not place credentials, private repositories, or production data in the test project until the extension behaves as documented.
- Record the VSIX filename, version, source, checksum, and installation date for rollback and auditing.
- Plan how you will receive security fixes, because manual packages do not automatically inherit gallery updates.
A practical decision path

Is it in Open VSX? Install it from VSCodium’s Extensions view and use the gallery’s normal update path.

Is it absent but offered by the publisher? Download the publisher-authorized VSIX, verify its license and compatibility, then install it through the interface or CLI.

Does the publisher restrict it to the official Visual Studio Code build? Do not bypass that restriction. Choose a compatible alternative or use the required editor.

Does your organization provide a private gallery? Configure it only with the administrator’s complete service, item, and extension endpoints.

Is there no authorized distribution? Ask the maintainer about Open VSX publication or an approved VSIX. Avoid unverified mirrors.
What to remember
Start with Open VSX because it is VSCodium’s preset gallery. When an extension is missing, the cleanest next step is a VSIX supplied or explicitly authorized by its publisher. Install it with Install from VSIX, Extensions: Install from VSIX, or codium --install-extension /path/to/extension.vsix. Then test the actual feature, check the license and editor restrictions, and arrange your own update monitoring. A package that installs is not automatically a package you are allowed to use or one that will work in VSCodium.
