You can use a Mac to install or boot a custom Android recovery, but there is no universal recovery image or fastboot command. The correct method depends on the exact phone variant, its partition layout, and the ROM or build it is running. Identify those details and follow the current instructions for that device before writing anything.
What to confirm before downloading a recovery
Find the manufacturer, exact model and variant or codename, current ROM and Android build, and bootloader status. Then confirm that the recovery build supports that exact device and software. Check the official TWRP device page or the relevant OrangeFox or device-maintainer instructions. A similar model name in a file name is not proof of compatibility.
Recovery choice is not a universal ranking. Compare the device coverage and maintainer instructions, compatibility with your current ROM and build, and the build’s ability to handle the device’s encryption and partition layout. The correct file and installation method are device-specific.

Prepare your Mac and phone
- Get Platform-Tools from Android Developers. Google provides a macOS download of Android SDK Platform-Tools, which includes the command-line tools used for ADB and fastboot. The official release page listed version 37.0.1, released in July 2026, when checked on October 7, 2026; download from the official page for the current version rather than relying on an older bundle.
- Unzip the download. Open Terminal and navigate to the extracted
platform-toolsdirectory when following the device maintainer’s ADB or fastboot instructions. - Connect the phone over USB. Use a data-capable cable that fits the phone and Mac, including any adapter needed for their ports. A charge-only cable cannot provide the data connection required for these tools. Android phones do not all use the same connector.
- Keep the exact device instructions at hand. Platform-Tools supplies the Mac-side utilities; it does not determine the recovery image, partition name, or safe command for a particular phone.
Unlocking and backing up
OrangeFox requires an unlocked bootloader. Unlocking is controlled by the device manufacturer and procedure, and it can erase user data on many devices; do not assume one unlocking sequence or wipe behavior applies to every phone. Follow the instructions for your exact model.

Before installing or upgrading a recovery, back up the data partition and internal storage. OrangeFox specifically calls for both. Keep a copy somewhere other than the phone so it remains available if the device becomes inaccessible.
Choose the installation path for the device layout
Do not choose between fastboot flash recovery and fastboot boot based only on whether a phone is described as A-only or A/B. Confirm the exact partition layout and follow the current instructions for the specific recovery build. OrangeFox documents these routes as examples, not as a complete guide to every Android device:

| Device configuration in OrangeFox instructions | Documented image action | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| A-only, or A/B or Virtual A/B with a dedicated recovery partition | fastboot flash recovery recovery.img |
Use this only when the device maintainer’s instructions agree; the maintainer may specify another command. |
| Standard boot-as-recovery A/B or Virtual A/B | fastboot boot recovery.img |
OrangeFox warns not to use this on a Virtual A/B device with a dedicated recovery partition. |
| Vendor_boot-as-recovery | Follow the ROM maintainer’s instructions. | Do not infer a command from the other layouts. |
The first OrangeFox command writes an image to a partition; the second boots an image temporarily. Neither command should be treated as a universal recipe. OrangeFox also warns against attempting fastboot boot in specified dedicated-recovery and vendor_boot cases, so check the exact build’s instructions before acting.
OrangeFox: image step and ZIP step are separate
For its documented fastboot route, OrangeFox describes extracting recovery.img from the recovery ZIP for the image step. After booting into recovery, check that data mounts and touch input works, then install the matching OrangeFox ZIP from within recovery as directed. Do not flash the OrangeFox ZIP with fastboot.

TWRP: use the instructions for the supported handset
TWRP’s official device pages provide support status and device-specific instructions. A fastboot example on one such page applies to that handset, not automatically to another model. Follow the instructions attached to your exact supported device rather than substituting a similarly named image or partition.

What “AOSP recovery” and ADB sideload mean
“AOSP recovery” can refer to the stock recovery image supplied by a device vendor or to an AOSP-derived custom build. Their features and installation procedures vary, so the term alone does not identify an image or command.
ADB sideload is a way to send a package to a compatible recovery after entering its sideload mode. The TWRP FAQ describes the command as adb sideload /path/to/file.zip. This is not the same operation as writing a recovery image with fastboot flash, and it is not a universal way to install a recovery partition.

Verify recovery before doing anything else
After booting the recovery, check that it responds to touch and can mount data before proceeding with a ROM or add-on. If either check fails, stop rather than continuing with an installation that depends on working recovery access.
If an OrangeFox-specific problem needs diagnosis, its FAQ gives recovery-log retrieval examples such as adb pull /tmp/recovery.log. If the recovery will not boot, do not keep writing images to guessed partitions; return to the current instructions from the recovery or ROM maintainer for the exact device.
What cannot be determined without the phone model
Without the exact handset variant and software build, it is not possible to identify the right recovery file or partition, determine the bootloader-unlock procedure, establish whether temporary fastboot boot is supported, or know whether the stock ROM may replace recovery. Recovery’s ability to decrypt user data is also device- and build-specific. Get those details before following any command sequence.
