Ubuntu App Center can install software, but the available official documentation does not confirm that the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS installer’s optional AAC codec support is installed through App Center. For that codec option, select the additional media formats setting during Ubuntu installation; for other codec needs, check your Ubuntu version and hardware before choosing a package.
Can you install media codecs from Ubuntu App Center?
App Center is Ubuntu’s graphical software installer. The Ubuntu Desktop guide describes browsing or searching for an application, selecting it, and clicking Install; it covers Snap and Debian package formats. Ubuntu’s application installation guide was last updated June 17, 2026.
App Center shows Snaps by default and lists Deb applications from Ubuntu’s official repositories. Third-party Deb applications may add software repositories and have unrestricted access to system resources, so install them only when you trust the publisher. Ubuntu’s package-format documentation was last updated June 22, 2026.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes list App Center enhancements, including third-party Deb installation, and attribute those enhancements to version 24.10. They do not specifically say that the installer’s optional AAC codec support is installed through App Center. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes describe these as separate facts, not a codec-specific App Center workflow.

How to enable the documented codec option during Ubuntu installation
For Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, the release notes document optional non-free AAC codec support for supported Bluetooth headsets. To enable the installer-provided codecs, select this option during installation:

This is an installer setting. Do not assume that installing an unrelated App Center app or Deb package enables this specific codec support. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes provide the version-specific detail.
How to install an available app or package through App Center
- Open App Center.
- Search or browse for the application or package you need.
- Select it and click Install.
- Authenticate when prompted to authorize installation.
Those are the general App Center steps in Ubuntu’s Desktop documentation. They apply only when the item you need is available in App Center; the documentation does not establish a universal codec package name or a codec-specific App Center procedure.

What to check if Ubuntu will not play a format
- Identify the format and device. Codec support can depend on the specific format and hardware; the 26.04 LTS note concerns AAC support for supported Bluetooth headsets, not every audio or video file.
- Check your Ubuntu release. Codec availability and installation guidance can vary by version. Use the release notes for the version installed on your computer rather than assuming the 26.04 instructions apply.
- Separate installer options from App Center packages. The available official documentation explains both, but does not identify the installer’s AAC option as something installed through App Center.
- Review the source of any third-party Deb. Ubuntu notes that third-party Debs may add repositories and have unrestricted access to system resources.
For historical context, Ubuntu 25.10’s release notes described that release as receiving nine months of support ending July 2026 and recommended Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS for readers seeking long-term support at the time.
