This Magento 2 tutorial covers self-hosted Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce installations using Composer. For a normal production installation, use the Composer project metapackage; use the Git-based workflow only if you are contributing to Magento Open Source. The compatibility snapshot below targets Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source 2.4.9, but check Adobe’s live requirements table for your exact release and deployment before installing.
Choose the edition and installation path
Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce use different Composer metapackages. The right route depends on what you are installing and why:
| Situation | Route | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Installing Magento Open Source for a store | Composer community-edition project metapackage | Standard application installation route. |
| Installing Adobe Commerce | Composer enterprise-edition project metapackage | Requires Adobe Commerce repository authentication keys. |
| Contributing code to Magento Open Source | Git-based contributor installation | For development contributions, not a production store. |
Adobe says Adobe Commerce codebases are distributed exclusively through Composer. Its contributor instructions also warn that a cloned contributor setup cannot be used in production. See Adobe’s quick-start on-premises installation guide, Adobe’s Commerce acquisition and prerequisite guide, and the Magento Open Source contributor installation guide.
Check the supported stack for your exact release
Adobe’s system-requirements page, updated September 18, 2026, lists Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 with Composer 2.10, OpenSearch 3, MariaDB 12.3 (recommended) or 11.8, PHP 8.5, RabbitMQ 4.3, ActiveMQ Artemis 2, Valkey 9, and nginx 1.30. These are the versions in that dated 2.4.9 snapshot, not a timeless recipe. Adobe supports only the combinations listed in its tables.
#1 Best Overall
Before installing, open the Adobe Commerce system requirements and select the row for your precise release and deployment type. The page has separate entries for releases and patch lines, and distinguishes on-premises from cloud configurations. Do not assume that a stack compatible with 2.4.9 is compatible with another patch release, or that a stack that happens to run is supported.
- Confirm PHP, Composer, database, search engine, cache, message broker, and web-server versions for your release.
- Check whether the deployment is self-hosted or uses Commerce cloud infrastructure; the applicable configurations differ.
- Arrange the server and its services before running the application installer.
Prepare Composer, credentials, and file ownership
Complete Adobe’s release-specific prerequisite tasks and install Composer before creating the project. If you are installing Adobe Commerce, obtain repository authentication keys. Adobe’s guide specifies that the public key is the repository username and the private key is the password. Follow Adobe’s documentation for configuring Composer credentials rather than placing private keys in a command or shared script.
Prepare the server and filesystem ownership before installation. Adobe notes that UNIX root privileges may be needed to install and configure server software, but warns against installing the application as root in the web-server document root: the web server may then be unable to interact with the files. Run Commerce CLI operations and configure cron as the filesystem owner.

The following commands are pinned to release 2.4.9, the release row in Adobe’s September 18, 2026 requirements snapshot. Use the command for your edition, replace the directory value, and first confirm that 2.4.9 and its dependencies remain appropriate for your environment.
Rank #3
Magento Open Source
composer create-project --repository-url=https://repo.magento.com/ magento/project-community-edition=2.4.9 <install-directory>
Adobe Commerce
composer create-project --repository-url=https://repo.magento.com/ magento/project-enterprise-edition=2.4.9 <install-directory>
The Adobe Commerce command requires repository authentication. These are project metapackage installations; contributors should instead follow the Git-based contributor guide.
Run the command-line installer
Run the installer from the application’s bin subdirectory, as the filesystem owner. Set the database connection, base URL, and administrator details to values prepared for your server. This example shows the command shape; replace each value with your own. Do not paste real passwords into shell history or shared logs.
cd <install-directory>/bin
php magento setup:install
--base-url=http://<store-host>/
--db-host=<database-host>
--db-name=<database-name>
--db-user=<database-user>
--db-password=<database-password>
--admin-firstname=<first-name>
--admin-lastname=<last-name>
--admin-email=<admin-email>
--admin-user=<admin-username>
--admin-password=<admin-password>
Adobe’s install guide documents the full installer options. It can be run again with different options to complete a phased setup or correct mistakes. By default, it does not overwrite the database when installing into the same database instance. Do not use database cleanup or reset options unless you understand their effect and have a verified backup.
Set secure URLs when deploying with HTTPS
If HTTPS is enabled, set secure URLs for both the storefront and Admin in the installer. The secure base URL must begin with https://.
Best Value
--use-secure=1
--base-url-secure=https://<store-host>/
--use-secure-admin=1
Include these options with the other setup:install arguments. They configure Commerce URL behavior; they do not configure or validate the TLS certificate, web server, or other deployment security controls.
Verify the installation and finish deployment work
After installation, verify that the storefront and Admin load at the intended URLs, then complete the operational setup for your environment. Adobe’s installation and operations documentation covers the applicable follow-up:
- Configure and verify Commerce cron tasks using the filesystem owner.
- Check cache and indexer status and complete any required deployment operations.
- Confirm the web server, HTTPS certificate, and secure routing independently of the installer’s URL settings.
- Keep the installed release and every service aligned with the supported requirements row for that deployment.
For hosting or cloud deployment, select infrastructure only after checking that it can provide the services and versions supported for your chosen release. The system requirements matrix is the compatibility reference, not a guarantee that any particular provider or server configuration is suitable.
