On current Windows 11 systems, “install Java JRE” usually means install a JDK. Oracle’s current downloads are centered on the Java Development Kit, and a JDK already includes the Java runtime needed to run Java applications. Install Java 8 separately only when an older application explicitly requires Java 8.
Oracle currently lists JDK 26.0.2 as its newest release and JDK 25 as the latest Long-Term Support (LTS) release. This guide uses JDK 25 for the Windows installation examples because it is the current LTS version.
Choose the correct Java download
| What you need | Download | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Run current Java applications or develop Java software | Oracle JDK 25 x64 Installer | The JDK contains the Java runtime and tools such as javac. |
| Run an older desktop application that specifically requires Java 8 | Java 8 from Java.com | Oracle’s consumer page provides Windows Online, Windows Offline, and Windows Offline (64-bit) installers. |
| Install Java across managed PCs | Oracle JDK x64 MSI Installer | The MSI can be installed with Windows Installer commands and logging. |
Download current JDK releases from the Oracle Java Downloads page. Under Windows, the JDK 25 files are labeled x64 Compressed Archive, x64 Installer, and x64 MSI Installer. For a normal Windows 11 installation, choose the x64 Installer:
jdk-25_windows-x64_bin.exe
Do not install Java merely to restore Java applets in Chrome, Edge, or another modern browser. Current browsers do not use the old Java browser-plugin model. Java 8 from Java.com is intended for separately installed desktop applications.
Install Java JDK 25 with the Windows installer
- Open the Oracle Java Downloads page.
- Locate the Windows x64 Installer for JDK 25 and download the
.exefile. - Open the folder containing the download, usually your Downloads folder.
- Double-click the installer file.
- Approve the Windows administrator prompt if it appears. Oracle requires administrator privileges for this installation.
- Follow the instructions displayed by the installer. Do not rely on a particular button sequence because Oracle can change the installer interface between releases.
- When setup has finished, close the installer. You can delete the downloaded
.exefile if you no longer need it.
The default JDK 25 directory is generally:
C:Program FilesJavajdk-25
Oracle also documents version-specific directories such as C:Program FilesJavajdk-25.0.1. Check the directory selected or displayed by your installer rather than assuming a particular patch-level folder.
Verify Java on Windows 11
Open a new Command Prompt or Windows Terminal window. A new session is important because an already-open terminal may still have the old environment variables.
- Press Windows, type Terminal, and open Windows Terminal, or search for Command Prompt.
- Run:
java -version
You should see a Java version corresponding to the JDK you installed. Then verify that the compiler is available:
Recommended Free Tools
javac -version
java -version confirms which runtime command Windows resolves. javac -version confirms that a JDK, rather than only a runtime, is available.
Oracle’s installer places command shims in:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesOracleJavajavapathjava.exe
C:Program FilesCommon FilesOracleJavajavapathjavaw.exe
C:Program FilesCommon FilesOracleJavajavapathjavac.exe
C:Program FilesCommon FilesOracleJavajavapathjshell.exe
These shims normally let Windows find Java commands without manually adding the JDK’s bin directory to PATH. The executables are also available directly under the JDK installation’s bin directory.
Install Java 8 for a legacy application
If an application’s documentation says it requires JRE 8 or Java 8, download it from Java.com’s Windows download page. That page provides:

- Windows Online
- Windows Offline
- Windows Offline (64-bit)
Choose the 64-bit download when the application and Windows installation support 64-bit Java. Use Java 8 only for compatibility reasons; it is not the normal choice for new Java software when the application supports a current JDK.
After installing Java 8, open a new terminal and run:
java -version
Be aware that installing JDK 25 and Oracle JRE 8 on the same PC can change which Java command Windows finds. Oracle documents an edge case in which JRE 8 is installed after JDK 25: the result may be java -version reporting 1.8.0, because the Java 8 installer places its command shim ahead of the JDK 25 shim. Oracle identifies this as a JRE 8 installer bug and recommends uninstalling and reinstalling JDK 25 to repair the shim arrangement.
Install the JDK with the MSI package
The MSI package is useful for administrators and scripted deployments. Download jdk-25_windows-x64_bin.msi, open an elevated Command Prompt, change to the directory containing the file, and run:
msiexec.exe /i jdk-25_windows-x64_bin.msi
For Oracle’s documented silent-install example, use:

Oracle’s silent example omits /i; preserve that syntax when reproducing the published command.
To create an installation log, use:
msiexec.exe /i installer.msi /L C:pathsetup.log
Replace installer.msi with the actual filename. Inspect the end of the log when checking whether the installation completed successfully.
Install the JDK silently with the EXE package
Open an elevated Command Prompt in the folder containing the downloaded installer and run:
jdk-25_windows-x64_bin.exe /s
The /s option performs a silent installation. Replace the filename with the actual installer name if you downloaded a different JDK release. Oracle states that ADDLOCAL is unnecessary because all components are installed by default.

Do you need to set JAVA_HOME?
Not for ordinary Java execution. Oracle’s installer provides command shims so that commands such as java can normally be found without manually setting JAVA_HOME.
Development tools, build systems, application servers, and scripts may still expect JAVA_HOME to point to the JDK directory, for example:
C:Program FilesJavajdk-25
Set it only when the software you are using requires it. If you do set it, use the actual JDK directory shown by the installer, then open a new terminal before testing the change.

Fix “java is not recognized” or the wrong Java version
1. Open a new terminal
Close Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and open it again. Environment changes are not always visible in an existing process.
2. Check which executable Windows is using
where java
where javac
This displays the executable paths being resolved from PATH. If an older JRE or JDK appears first, Windows will use it instead of the installation you intended.
3. Run the JDK executable directly
Use the JDK’s actual installation directory to test it independently of command resolution:
"C:Program FilesJavajdk-25binjava.exe" -version
"C:Program FilesJavajdk-25binjavac.exe" -version
Adjust the path if the installer used a version-specific directory.
4. Check for multiple JDKs
Multiple Java installations can coexist, but the effective PATH order determines which one java -version reports. Remove obsolete Java entries or place the intended JDK location first according to your organization’s setup requirements.
5. Stop running Java applications before replacing a JDK
Close Java applications, development tools, servers, and background services before updating or replacing a JDK directory. Oracle warns that active Java processes can cause unexpected errors during an update, replacement, or directory overwrite.

Uninstall Java from Windows 11
Oracle documents this removal path:
- Open Control Panel.
- Open the Windows Add/Remove Programs utility.
- Select the Oracle Java or JDK installation you want to remove.
- Start the uninstall operation and follow the displayed instructions.
If several Java versions are installed, check the version carefully before removing one. A legacy application may depend on Java 8 even if your current development tools use JDK 25.
FAQ
Is Java JRE still available for Windows 11?
For current Oracle releases, the normal download is a JDK rather than a separately downloadable JRE. The JDK includes the runtime. For applications that explicitly require Java 8, Oracle’s consumer Java.com page still provides Java 8 Windows downloads.
Should I install JDK 25 or Java 8?
Install JDK 25 when the application supports a current Java release or when you need Java development tools. Install Java 8 only when a legacy application specifically requires Java 8.

Do not assume it does. JAVA_HOME is not required for normal use of the java command, but development tools and build systems may require it. Set it to the actual JDK folder only when the software documentation calls for it.
Why does java -version show the wrong version?
Windows is probably resolving another Java executable earlier in PATH. Run where java, inspect the listed paths, and check for older JDK or JRE installations. Installing Java 8 after JDK 25 can also trigger Oracle’s documented javapath ordering issue.
Will Java work in Chrome or Edge after installation?
Installing Java does not restore Java applets or the old browser plugin. Current Windows Java installations are for installed desktop applications, development tools, servers, and scripts.
Can I install a newer JDK 25 update beside the existing JDK 25 installation?
Oracle’s JDK 25 documentation says installers support only one version of a given Java feature release. A newer JDK 25 update can replace the existing JDK 25 installation rather than coexist with it.

For a current Windows 11 computer, install the Oracle JDK x64 Installer and verify it with java -version and javac -version. Use Java 8 from Java.com only when a legacy desktop application requires it. If more than one Java version is installed, use where java to identify which installation Windows is actually running.
