You can run Inkscape on a Chromebook if the device supports ChromeOS’s Linux development environment and your administrator has not blocked it. Enable Linux in Settings, then choose an installation route: APT is documented by Inkscape but may install an older release; Flathub listed Inkscape 1.4.4 for supported architectures on October 4, 2026, but Google’s Chromebook instructions do not provide a Flatpak setup procedure. Check the current package version before installing if you need the latest stable release.

Before you install: check Chromebook Linux support

Inkscape does not install as a regular ChromeOS app through the steps below. It runs inside the Linux environment on ChromeOS. Linux is off by default, and Google notes that a work or school administrator may restrict it. Google says devices launched in 2019 or later generally support Linux, but that is a screening rule, not a guarantee for every model or configuration. Check your device against Google’s Linux-support device information, and confirm the Linux setup option appears in Settings.

Enable the Linux development environment

  1. Open Settings on your Chromebook.
  2. Select About ChromeOS, then Developers.
  3. Beside Linux development environment, select Set up and follow the prompts.

Google says setup can take 10 minutes or more. It creates a Debian environment with APT, the package manager used by the command-line installation below. ChromeOS menu labels can change between releases, so if the path differs, look in Settings for the Linux development environment option. See Google’s Chromebook Linux setup instructions.

Choose an Inkscape installation route

The two routes differ chiefly in how the app is packaged and how certain the available version is. The sources confirm the APT instructions and a dated Flathub version listing; they do not establish a verified head-to-head comparison of setup difficulty or performance.

Route What is established What to check
APT in the Debian environment Inkscape’s wiki documents the install commands for Debian and Ubuntu. The repository package may lag behind the latest stable release. Confirm the version available to your environment if you need a particular release.
Flatpak from Flathub Flathub listed Inkscape 1.4.4 for aarch64 and x86_64 on October 4, 2026. Google’s Chromebook Linux setup documentation does not provide the Flatpak-specific setup steps or establish that Flathub is configured on your Chromebook.

Option 1: Install with APT

In the Linux Terminal, run the commands given in Inkscape’s installation wiki:

  1. sudo apt-get update
  2. sudo apt-get install inkscape

Follow any prompts in Terminal. This is the project-documented Debian/Ubuntu route, but the wiki warns that distribution repositories may not carry the most recent release. If the installed version is too old for your needs, consult the current Inkscape download page for its latest stable-release guidance rather than assuming APT has installed the newest build.

Option 2: Check the Flathub build

If you want a Flatpak package, first review the current Inkscape listing on Flathub. It showed version 1.4.4, supporting aarch64 and x86_64, on October 4, 2026. That is a dated listing observation, not a promise that 1.4.4 remains current. The cited ChromeOS instructions do not explain how to configure Flatpak on a Chromebook, so do not assume Flathub’s Install button alone will complete setup. Check the requirements for your current ChromeOS Linux environment before following Flatpak-specific instructions.

Open Inkscape and work with Chromebook files

Google documents sharing folders between ChromeOS Files and Linux. In the Files app, share the folder you want Linux apps to access; shared folders are available inside Linux under /mnt/chromeos. Use a shared folder for documents you need to open or save from Inkscape. Google also notes that Linux apps run in the same sandbox as other Linux apps, while access to permissions such as USB and microphone is not shared by default. See Google’s ChromeOS Linux setup and development guidance.

What can affect compatibility or drawing performance?

  • Managed devices: A school or workplace administrator may disable Linux setup, even on otherwise compatible hardware.
  • Architecture: The Flathub listing observed in October 2026 showed aarch64 and x86_64 packages. Check your device and the current package listing rather than assuming every Chromebook build is interchangeable.
  • Graphics acceleration: Google’s support information lists hardware acceleration, including GPU and video decode, among limitations, and its March 2026 developer update says graphics acceleration may work but is no longer supported if it breaks. Do not rely on guaranteed hardware-accelerated drawing; applicability across later ChromeOS rollouts is not established in those sources.
  • Linux app isolation: Linux apps share a sandbox with one another. Google says this separates them from the rest of the Chromebook, but a harmful Linux app can affect other Linux apps in that environment.

ChromeOS Linux changes make current instructions important

In a developer update dated March 26, 2026, Google described Baguette, a next-generation Linux-on-ChromeOS architecture planned to become the default for new installs starting with M147. The update said only new Baguette installs were being offered at that time and listed UI-based Debian upgrades and UI-based .deb installation and removal among deprecated features. It does not establish which architecture or migration options are available on every Chromebook as of October 4, 2026. Do not assume an existing Linux environment has migrated automatically; check current Chromebook and ChromeOS guidance before relying on older management steps. See Google’s Linux on ChromeOS update.
