Hermes Agent has two native Windows installation routes: a Desktop MSIX package for a graphical app-install experience, or a PowerShell installer for a CLI-first setup. You do not need WSL2 for either native route. After installing, open a new terminal, configure a model and provider, and test a basic chat before adding optional tools.
Choose the Windows installation route that fits your setup

The available documentation does not establish that one route is faster or more reliable than the other. Choose based on Windows version, GUI versus CLI preference, and whether you need WSL-specific behavior.
Install Hermes Agent from PowerShell
Run the official installer command in PowerShell:
iex (irm https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.ps1)The source installer prepares a source checkout, managed tools, launcher, and data directory. By default, the source is under %LOCALAPPDATA%hermeshermes-agent, the CLI entry point is under %LOCALAPPDATA%hermesbin, and user data is under %LOCALAPPDATA%hermes. The Windows installer supports -HermesHome to customize the data location and -InstallDir to customize the installation location. See the official installation guide for the current command and installer details.
When installation finishes, open a new PowerShell window before checking the command. An existing shell may not yet have the updated user PATH.

Know what the source installer adds
The source installation clones Hermes Agent, bootstraps uv, and uses Hermes PM to prepare pinned versions of Python, Node.js, npm, ripgrep, and FFmpeg. It selects the all Python extra, but that does not mean every optional extra is installed. The official installation documentation describes these managed dependencies at Hermes Agent Installation.
Browser and computer-use tools are installed by default. If you do not need them yet, omit them during installation with -SkipBrowser and/or -SkipComputerUse. You can add them later with:

hermes pm install agent-browser
hermes pm install cua-driverA failed download for an optional tool may leave the core installation complete; the installer can print a retry command for that tool. Avoid installing unrelated system packages based on generic Python setup advice: the installer manages its pinned runtime and tools. For a feature-specific dependency, use the documented steps for that feature.
Complete first-run setup before adding integrations
- Open a fresh terminal. This lets PowerShell pick up the PATH change made by the installer.
- Start Hermes: run
hermes. Follow or confirm the initial setup prompts. - Configure a model and provider. Run
hermes modelto select and configure them. Provider access may require network connectivity and credentials. - Test a normal chat. Confirm the model responds before changing other settings.
- Add only the tools you need. Use
hermes toolsto configure enabled tools, or install optional browser and computer-use components when your workflow calls for them.
For a broader setup wizard, run hermes setup. The official guide also documents hermes setup --portal for configuring Nous Portal and its Tool Gateway. See the installation documentation for the available setup paths.

Fix common Windows installation problems
hermes is not recognized
Open a new PowerShell window first. If the command is still unavailable, inspect your PATH and follow the checks in the official installation guide.
An installation step failed
Check logs/install.log in the Hermes data directory. The installer reports status by step and, after a failure, includes recent log lines to help identify the problem.

A dependency is missing
Run hermes doctor. The documentation says it reports missing dependencies and how to address them; an interactive run may offer to install missing items.

Use hermes model to configure the provider, or use the documented hermes config set flow for the relevant key. Check the provider’s credential requirements and network access.
A Windows command alias points to another installation
In PowerShell, run Get-Command hermes -All to list every matching command. Windows execution aliases can be reviewed under Settings → Apps → Advanced app settings → App execution aliases. The native Windows guide is at Hermes Agent Windows (Native) Guide.
You need WSL-specific behavior
Install or use Hermes inside WSL2 and consult the official Windows guide. Native Windows data lives under %LOCALAPPDATA%hermes; WSL data lives under ~/.hermes. They are separate, so troubleshooting or backing up one installation does not automatically cover the other.
