On a GrapheneOS phone, open the built-in Apps app, choose Google Play services, and tap Install. GrapheneOS installs the dependent Google Play Store at the same time. Open Play Store in that same user or work profile, sign in only if you need Store downloads or in-app purchases, then install your apps normally. No USB cable or third-party APK site is required for this procedure.
What you are installing
GrapheneOS does not bundle Google apps or make Google services its system backend. Instead, its compatibility layer lets you install official Google Play releases as ordinary applications inside Android’s standard app sandbox. Google Play services, Google Play Store and any apps you download remain confined to the profile where you install them.
The official procedure is documented in the GrapheneOS Usage Guide: open GrapheneOS’s own Apps repository client, select Google Play services and install it. The client handles the interdependent Play components, including Play Store. Do not download a random Play-services APK from a mirror.
Installing the components does not automatically give them privileged access. They must use normal Android permissions and receive your consent for profile data or other access. You can remove them later like other apps.

Before you begin
- Use a supported phone that already has GrapheneOS installed and is running normally.
- Have an internet connection for the Apps client and subsequent Play Store downloads.
- Decide which profile will contain Google Play and the apps that depend on it.
- Be prepared to approve Android’s standard app-source and permission prompts.
There is no separate license fee for the Apps-client installation, and no special accessory is needed. Your practical requirements are a working GrapheneOS device, network access and enough storage for Play components and the apps you choose. If you are installing GrapheneOS itself, that is a different operation with its own backup, data-wipe, browser and USB requirements.
You do not need a Google account merely to install the sandboxed components. A Google account is needed by Play Store when you want to download apps from the Store or make in-app purchases. Individual apps can impose additional account requirements.
Choose the right profile
Google Play is installed separately in each GrapheneOS user or work profile. An installation in Owner is not available to another profile, and an app in one profile cannot use Play components installed in a different profile. Put Play and every dependent app together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Choice | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Owner profile | A straightforward phone setup in which most of your apps need Play. | Simplest installation and day-to-day management. Play-enabled apps live alongside your other Owner apps. |
| Separate user or work profile | Keeping Google-dependent apps apart from the rest of your phone. | Install Play again inside that profile, then place the dependent apps there. The separation limits which apps can use Play but adds profile switching and separate app management. |
Owner minimizes repetition: install Play once and manage apps in one place. A separate profile is more deliberate when only a few work, entertainment or Google-dependent apps need Play. It also means those apps cannot automatically read data from your Owner profile. The trade-off is that you must switch profiles and repeat installations, updates and permission decisions there.
Choose before installing. If you later decide to move an app, uninstall it from the first profile and install it in the destination profile; profiles do not share the same app data. Installing the same package in two profiles creates two independently managed copies, not a shared installation.
Install sandboxed Google Play from GrapheneOS Apps
- Open Apps. From the app drawer, launch Apps, GrapheneOS’s built-in app repository client. This is the supported source for the Play components.
- Select Google Play services. Find Google Play services in the catalog and open its details.
- Tap Install. Approve the installation prompts. GrapheneOS installs the dependent Google Play Store as part of this process because the components work together.
- Wait for completion. When installation finishes, Play services and Play Store appear as normal apps in the profile’s app drawer. If you installed in a secondary profile, switch to that profile before opening them.
- Grant only permissions you want. If an app requests contacts, location, notifications or another permission, Android presents the decision. Denying a permission can disable that particular feature without making the whole Play layer privileged.
The process does not require sideloading, rooting or connecting the phone to a computer. The GrapheneOS project specifically describes this Apps-client route in its Usage Guide.
If Android asks to allow an app source
Play Store uses Android’s ordinary package-installer flow. On a first installation, Android may ask you to allow Play Store to install unknown apps or to approve a specific install request. Read the prompt, enable the source only if it identifies Play Store, return to the Store and complete the action. This authorization is a normal per-source control; it does not grant Play Store unrestricted system privileges. You can later review or revoke it in Android’s app-installation settings.
Sign in and download apps
- Open Play Store in the same profile. Launch it from the profile where you installed Google Play services.
- Choose whether to sign in. Sign in with a Google account when you need Play Store downloads, license checks, app delivery or in-app purchases. Leaving the account unsigned does not prevent the Play components themselves from existing on the phone.
- Authorize Play Store if Android asks. Android can require you to allow Play Store as an app source before it installs an app. Follow the system prompt, return to Play Store and approve the requested installation.
- Install the app. Search for the app, review its requested permissions and tap Install. The resulting app is installed in the current profile and cannot automatically access apps or data in another profile.
- Repeat in other profiles when necessary. If the same app is needed in Owner and a work profile, install it separately in each profile. Each copy has its own data and Play relationship.
Play Store is useful for more than the initial APK: it delivers updates, app assets and feature modules, performs license checks and handles in-app purchases. The account requirement applies to those Store functions, not to the mere presence of sandboxed Play services.

GrapheneOS describes Play Store as the most secure way to install and update Play Store apps because it uses Android’s normal installer and consent model. Third-party APK mirrors can bypass that familiar update and verification path, so they are not an equivalent recommendation. If a developer offers a direct download, treat it as a separate sideloading decision rather than part of the standard GrapheneOS setup.
Keep background notifications reliable
For push notifications and other background functions, open the system battery settings for Google Play services and grant a battery-optimization exception. GrapheneOS’s guidance says this exception is for Play services; Play Store itself does not need it merely to function.
Battery-exemption labels can vary slightly by GrapheneOS release, but the destination is the app’s battery-usage controls. Search Settings for “battery optimization” if you cannot find the entry, select Google Play services, and choose the option that allows background use or excludes it from optimization. Apply the change only in the profile where Play services is installed.

This exception is not a blanket recommendation for every app. Keep normal battery controls for apps that do not need persistent background delivery, and check the individual app’s notification permission as well. A notification can still be blocked by the app’s own settings, Android’s notification permission or a disabled profile.
Location requests are routed by default through GrapheneOS’s own implementation. Most apps work with that arrangement. The Usage Guide documents settings for uncommon cases that specifically require Google’s network-location service; enable that only when an app’s documented function needs it.
How the sandbox changes Google Play’s behavior
On conventional Android builds, Google components may be integrated as privileged system packages. GrapheneOS takes a different approach: its compatibility layer runs official Google Play releases as regular sandboxed apps, with no special operating-system privileges simply because they come from Google.
- Profile scope: Play services, Play Store and Play-installed apps can see only the profile’s apps and data, subject to the permissions you grant.
- Normal permissions: Contacts, location, notifications, files and similar access still use Android’s permission prompts and settings.
- No system dependency: GrapheneOS can operate without Google Play. Installing Play is an optional choice for apps that need it.
- Separate lifecycle: You can update, disable or uninstall the Play components from the profile’s app settings without reinstalling the operating system.
Google Play therefore is not a hidden GrapheneOS backend, and an app in another profile cannot borrow its services. If you disable or remove Play in one profile, only that profile’s Play-dependent behavior is affected. The same components may remain installed and active in another profile.
This design is why adding Play does not turn GrapheneOS into a stock-Google Android build. It also means an app that expects privileged Google integration may behave differently from the same app on a certified device.

Compatibility: what should and should not be expected
GrapheneOS characterizes compatibility as near-complete for apps that depend on Google Play, but it does not promise universal support. Features that require privileged access, device-specific certification or deeper operating-system integration can remain unavailable in the baseline sandboxed layer.
- Ordinary Play Store delivery, updates, license checks and in-app purchases are supported through Play Store when you sign in as required.
- Push notifications generally work after Play services is permitted to run in the background.
- Apps that require a privileged Google package or an unimplemented OS integration can fail even though Play services is installed.
- Android Auto is a documented example that needs an extension and separate setup rather than the basic installation alone.
- Banking, enterprise, payment, location and device-management apps can make their own integrity or certification checks. Test the particular app you need instead of assuming that every feature will work.
Compatibility can also vary by app version and by the feature you use. A banking app may open and support account viewing but reject a particular payment or device-integrity check. A location app may work with GrapheneOS’s default provider while another specifically requests Google’s network location. Treat those as app-specific requirements, not evidence that every Play installation is defective.
If one app fails, check the app developer’s support guidance and the current GrapheneOS Usage Guide. A failure does not necessarily mean the Play installation is broken; it may reflect a requirement that cannot be provided without privileged or OS-integrated access.

Play Store updates
Play Store can deliver app updates, asset downloads, license checks and feature updates using Android’s standard installation flow. On Android 12 and later, unattended updates can be used for apps for which Play Store was the last installer, subject to the device’s update and consent conditions. If an app was installed by another source, Play may not silently update it.
Automatic updating does not cross profile boundaries. An app installed in Owner must be updated for Owner; its copy in a work profile follows that profile’s Play account and installer history.
Updating Play components
Use the Apps client and the normal app-update mechanisms presented by GrapheneOS. Keep Google Play services and Play Store current when an app’s developer requires a newer version. Do not mix random APK downloads into the setup unless you understand the security and update consequences.
Removing or reinstalling Play
To remove Play from a profile, uninstall Google Play Store and Google Play services through that profile’s app settings, or use the available uninstall controls in Apps. Removing them deletes or disables the Play-dependent functions in that profile; it does not remove GrapheneOS itself. To reinstall, return to Apps, select Google Play services and install it again, then open Play Store in the same profile.
Uninstalling an app can remove its local data, so export or back up anything important using that app’s supported method first. Reinstalling Play does not merge data between profiles or restore an app’s previous account state automatically.

Troubleshooting common problems
“I cannot find Google Play in F-Droid or another store”
That is expected. The supported entry point is GrapheneOS’s Apps client, not F-Droid or an APK mirror. Open Apps, search for Google Play services and install it there.
Play Store is missing after installing Play services
Confirm that the installation completed and that you are looking in the same profile. Google Play Store is installed as a dependency, but a secondary profile has its own app drawer and app list. Reopen Apps in that profile and check for pending installation prompts.
Play Store asks for an account
That prompt is normal when you want to download Store apps or use in-app purchases. Sign in if you need those functions. The account is not a prerequisite for merely having the sandboxed Play components installed.
Notifications arrive late or not at all
Check that Google Play services has a battery-optimization exception in the affected profile, then verify the individual app’s notification permission. Play Store does not need the exception just to download apps.
An app says Google Play services is missing
Check the profile first: the app and Play services must be in the same profile. If they are, update Play services and the app, review the app’s permissions, and consult the developer’s support information. The app may require a privileged or OS-integrated feature that sandboxed Play cannot provide.
Location behaves differently from another Android phone
GrapheneOS routes location requests through its own implementation by default. Review the app’s location permission and the GrapheneOS location settings. Only enable Google’s network-location option when the app specifically requires it and you accept that dependency.
Downloads stop at “pending”
Check the network connection, available storage, the profile in which Play Store is open and whether Android is waiting for an app-source approval. If Play Store was force-stopped or its network permission was changed, restore the normal permission and try again. Reopening Apps can also reveal an incomplete Play-component installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →An app installed outside Play will not update in Play Store
Play Store’s unattended-update behavior applies when it was the last installer. An APK installed by another source may need to be updated from that same source or removed and reinstalled through Play Store. Avoid installing a second copy simply to force an update, because that can create signing or data conflicts.

Do you need a USB cable?
No cable is needed to install Google Play apps on a device that already runs GrapheneOS. The USB-cable requirement belongs to the separate task of flashing GrapheneOS with the WebUSB installer. That installer is documented at grapheneos.org/install/web; the general installation recommendations are at grapheneos.org/install/. Do not buy or connect a cable solely for the Apps-client Play setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I install Google Play on GrapheneOS?
Open the built-in Apps app, select Google Play services and tap Install. GrapheneOS installs the dependent Play Store with it. Then open Play Store in the same profile.
Can I install Google Play from F-Droid or APKPure?
Use GrapheneOS’s Apps app instead. It is the documented source for the interdependent Play components; third-party mirrors are not an equivalent security or update path.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need a Google account to install sandboxed Google Play?
No. An account is needed for Play Store downloads, license checks and in-app purchases, but not simply to install the sandboxed components.
Should Google Play go in the Owner profile or a separate profile?
Owner is simplest when most apps need Play. A separate user or work profile is better when you want to confine Google-dependent apps, but you must install and manage Play again in that profile.
Why does an app say Google Play services is missing?
Make sure the app and Play services are in the same profile, update both, and review permissions. The app may require privileged Google integration that sandboxed Play cannot provide.
How do I make push notifications work?
Grant Google Play services a battery-optimization exception in the profile where it is installed, then check the app’s notification permission. Play Store itself does not need that exception.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will every banking or payment app work?
No guarantee is possible. Apps can perform their own integrity, certification or device-management checks, and some features may require privileged or OS-integrated functionality. Test the specific app.
Is a USB cable required?
Not for installing Play apps on an existing GrapheneOS installation. USB is part of the separate WebUSB process for flashing GrapheneOS itself.
The Bottom Line
Install Google Play services from GrapheneOS’s Apps app, keep Play and dependent apps in the same profile, and use Play Store for downloads and updates. Sign in only for Store features that require an account, exempt Play services from battery optimization for reliable background delivery, and expect a small number of privileged or device-integrated features to remain incompatible.
