Install Google Apps (GApps) from recovery immediately after the LineageOS ZIP and before the phone’s first Android boot. The package must match the exact LineageOS release and the device architecture shown on your model’s official LineageOS page. Recovery commands, firmware requirements, bootloader steps and button combinations are device-specific, so there is no safe universal ZIP or recovery sequence.

If the phone has already booted LineageOS without GApps, the documented route is to back up your data, factory-reset the phone, sideload the recommended matching package in recovery, and then boot again. A factory reset erases user data. Installing an arbitrary package into an already-running system can cause crashes and does not solve Play Integrity or app-eligibility restrictions.

What Google Apps add to LineageOS

LineageOS is distributed without Google’s proprietary applications and services. Google Apps are an optional add-on installed separately; LineageOS can boot and run without them. A correctly matched package normally supplies components such as Google Play Store and Google Play services, which many applications use for sign-in, licensing, location, notifications and other APIs.

The official LineageOS Google Apps guidance lists the package recommended for supported mobile releases. The page currently lists MindTheGapps builds for LineageOS 21 (Android 14), LineageOS 22 (Android 15) and LineageOS 23 (Android 16), with ARM and ARM64 variants. Those mappings can change as releases are updated, so check the page and your device page again when you download.

GApps are not a guarantee that every application will run. Apps can reject unlocked bootloaders, modified operating systems or devices that do not meet their own security and compatibility requirements. Installing GApps also does not hide the device’s bootloader or verified-boot state.

Check compatibility before downloading anything

Identify the exact device and support status

  1. Find the phone’s exact model designation, including any regional or carrier variant.
  2. Open that model’s official LineageOS installation page and confirm that the device is currently supported.
  3. Read the complete page before starting. Note the listed LineageOS release, architecture, recovery image, firmware requirements, bootloader instructions, backup warnings and any device-specific data-formatting steps.

Do not use a guide for a similar-looking handset. A model-specific page can require a different recovery, partition procedure or firmware level even when two phones share a name.

Match both release and architecture

Download the LineageOS build and GApps package for the same release family. For example, a package built for Android 14/LineageOS 21 is not a substitute for one built for Android 15/LineageOS 22. Select the architecture named in the device information—commonly ARM or ARM64 on supported phones—rather than guessing from the processor brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
LineageOS release listed on the current GApps page Corresponding Android version Architectures listed
LineageOS 21 Android 14 ARM and ARM64
LineageOS 22 Android 15 ARM and ARM64
LineageOS 23 Android 16 ARM and ARM64

This table reflects the versions shown on the cited page and is time-sensitive. If your device page names a different release or architecture, follow that page and the current GApps listing instead.

Prepare the computer, phone and cable

  • Back up photos, messages, authenticator data and any files you cannot replace. Unlocking, formatting or resetting a device can erase storage.
  • Install the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) and fastboot tools required by the device guide.
  • Use a charged phone and a reliable USB data cable. A charge-only cable cannot carry an ADB or fastboot connection. If detection fails, try another suitable cable and another USB port; the official device guide specifically recommends those checks.
  • Download the exact LineageOS ZIP and matching GApps ZIP to a location your computer can access. Do not rename files in a way that makes them difficult to identify.
  • Have the device guide open while working. It is the authority for bootloader state, firmware, recovery entry and partition-specific commands.

Plan the installation before you connect the phone

There is no separate hardware purchase required for GApps. The package is downloadable software, and an existing cable is sufficient if it supports data and works with your computer. A replacement described as a USB data cable for Android phone is only a practical option if your current cable is charge-only, damaged or unreliable. The device guide’s cable advice is about getting a dependable data connection, not about a particular brand or model.

Budget time for a backup and for reading the complete guide rather than treating this as a one-file update. Bootloader unlocking, formatting and the reset route can remove local data. Save two-factor authentication codes, recovery keys and files that are not synchronized elsewhere. Make sure you know the Google account credentials needed after setup, especially if the stock system still has Factory Reset Protection requirements.

Choose the correct route

  • LineageOS has not started yet: install the ROM and GApps consecutively in recovery, then boot once. This avoids a reset and is the intended path.
  • LineageOS has already started without GApps: back up, factory-reset, install the packages in recovery and boot again. The reset is mandatory in the documented procedure and erases user data.
  • The phone is showing an account or setup lock: stop repeating flashes and read the exact device support instructions. This may involve Factory Reset Protection rather than a missing package.

Common mistakes to avoid

Mistake Why it causes trouble Safer response
Using a ZIP for another Android generation System and Google service components may not match. Compare the LineageOS release on the device page with the GApps listing.
Guessing ARM versus ARM64 Architecture determines whether the package can run correctly. Use the architecture explicitly named by the official device information.
Rebooting after the ROM but before GApps The first boot changes the supported installation path and can lead to crashes. Remain in recovery and sideload the add-on immediately.
Accepting a warning for an unknown ZIP A known add-on warning is not permission to install arbitrary files. Proceed only when the device guide identifies the expected GApps prompt.
Repeating blind wipes Wipes erase data and do not necessarily fix FRP or an integrity restriction. Identify the symptom and consult the device-specific instructions.

Route A: install GApps before the first Android boot

This is the intended, lower-friction route when LineageOS has not yet been started. The order matters: install LineageOS, install GApps in the same recovery session, then boot Android.

  1. Read the entire model guide. Complete its prerequisites for bootloader unlocking, firmware and recovery. Follow its backup and data-format instructions exactly.
  2. Enter the named recovery. Use the button combination or command documented for your model. Do not substitute a recovery from another device.
  3. Install or sideload the LineageOS ZIP. The guide may use recovery’s “Apply update” or “ADB sideload” function. Complete that operation and remain in recovery.
  4. Do not reboot to Android. A first boot before GApps changes the recovery path and, according to the official guidance, can lead to crashes.
  5. Sideload the matching GApps ZIP. In recovery, select the guide’s ADB-sideload option, then run the command the guide specifies on the computer. A commonly shown form is adb -d sideload /path/to/zip; treat this as an example, not a universal command or sequence.
  6. Handle the expected add-on signature prompt. Recovery may warn that the GApps add-on is not signed with LineageOS’s official key. The device guide explains how to continue for this known add-on. Do not accept signature warnings for unknown files.
  7. Reboot only after every selected package reports completion. Choose the recovery’s reboot-to-system action specified by the guide. First-boot time varies by phone, storage and build, so do not infer a problem from a single universal time limit.

The example Install LineageOS on G guide illustrates the ADB-sideload workflow and cable checks, but its recovery details apply to that device only. Your model’s page may require a different recovery reboot or command.

Route B: the phone already booted without GApps

Do not simply flash a random older ZIP from a running system. The official FAQ and GApps guidance require a reset-and-reinstall path after the first LineageOS boot.

  1. Back up anything you need. The next step removes user data, including locally stored files and app data.
  2. Return to the device’s supported recovery. Follow the model guide rather than using an unlisted recovery or generic button sequence.
  3. Factory-reset the phone. This erases user data. Confirm that the reset completed as the guide describes.
  4. Sideload the recommended LineageOS package and matching GApps package. Use the same release and architecture checks as a new installation, and install GApps before booting Android again.
  5. Reboot to the system after installation. Complete Android setup and test Play Store and Play services.

The official wording is explicit: “If you reboot into LineageOS before installing Google Apps, you must factory reset and then install them, otherwise expect crashes.” See the Google Apps page for the project’s current instructions.

Understand recovery’s sideload behavior

A host-side percentage is not the final result

During ADB sideload, the computer may show a confusing failure or an incomplete-looking percentage near the end even when recovery accepted the package. Use recovery’s own completion or error message and the device guide’s instructions as the decision point. Do not interrupt a package solely because the computer’s transfer display looks unusual.

Why signature verification can appear

LineageOS recovery verifies package signatures. The recommended GApps add-on is not signed with LineageOS’s official key, so the guide may tell you to continue past an expected verification warning. That exception applies only in the documented context and does not make arbitrary ZIP files safe.

Fix “Play Store or Google Play services keeps crashing”

Work through the causes in this order rather than repeatedly flashing unrelated files.

1. Check whether Android was booted before GApps

If the phone reached the LineageOS home screen before GApps was installed, use the Route B procedure: back up, factory-reset, sideload the recommended packages in recovery and boot again. The reset is required and erases user data.

2. Verify release and architecture

Compare the installed LineageOS release shown by your device guide with the GApps release, and confirm the ARM or ARM64 choice. A package for a different Android generation or architecture is not a safe workaround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Recheck the model-specific sequence

Follow the recovery, partition and reboot order on your exact device page. The project warns that deviating from the packages listed in its wiki can cause problems. Clearing cache, changing the system date or reflashing an arbitrary package is not established as a universal official fix.

Play Store opens, but an app refuses to run

This is often an app-eligibility or integrity issue rather than a Play Store installation failure. Some devices report bootloader-unlock and verified-boot information to Android. The LineageOS FAQ explains the project’s position: “We don’t purposefully remove those flags, as it’s not our place to lie about security features.”

Consequently, installing GApps cannot promise that a banking, streaming, enterprise or game application will pass its checks. Read the device’s quirks or notes page and the app provider’s stated requirements. Treat an app’s refusal as a separate compatibility decision; do not assume that another GApps ZIP will change security signals, and do not use integrity-bypass instructions as an official fix.

When apps will not install or setup behaves strangely

Factory Reset Protection (FRP)

Factory Reset Protection can interfere with setup when Google accounts were not removed from the stock installation as required by the device’s installation instructions. Symptoms can include blocked setup, inability to add an account or unexpected lock-screen behavior, but the symptom alone does not prove FRP is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are already in this state, consult the official support instructions for your exact device. Avoid repeating blind wipes or flashing unrelated ZIPs; another reset may not resolve an account-protection condition and can erase more data.

Package and recovery mismatch

Before changing anything else, confirm the supported model, current firmware, recovery and GApps release on the official page. A package that installs on a similar phone is not evidence that it belongs on yours.

Fastboot or ADB does not detect the phone

  1. Confirm that ADB and fastboot are installed and that the phone is in the mode required by the device guide. ADB mode, recovery sideload mode and bootloader/fastboot mode are different states.
  2. Use a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable.
  3. Try another USB port and another known-good data cable, as the cited official guide recommends.
  4. Reconnect after entering the requested mode and rerun the exact command from the guide. Do not substitute a generic flashing command.

If the guide requires a recovery reboot before the next sideload, perform that step even if the computer still displays a previous transfer status.

Notifications do not arrive

Push notifications are a services issue distinct from whether the Play Store application opens. The LineageOS FAQ says push notifications require GApps or MicroG. When using MicroG, enable Google Cloud Messaging in MicroG’s settings. Do not treat a notification delay by itself as proof that the GApps ZIP was installed incorrectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose between Google Apps, no GApps and MicroG

Choice What it provides Important limitation
Google Apps Google Play Store and proprietary Google services for applications that depend on them. Must match the LineageOS release and architecture; does not guarantee Play Integrity or every app’s eligibility.
No Google Apps A LineageOS installation without Google’s proprietary services. Apps requiring Play services or Play Store may not install, sign in or deliver push notifications.
MicroG where supported An alternative services layer; the FAQ notes that push notifications can work when Google Cloud Messaging is enabled. Feature and compatibility behavior is not established as identical to Google Apps; verify each app’s requirements.

Choose before installation when possible. Changing the choice after the first boot can require the factory-reset route, and all three choices remain subject to individual application requirements.

Post-install verification checklist

  • Android completed its first boot without a crash loop.
  • Play Store opens and can sign in, if you chose Google Apps.
  • Play services is present and not repeatedly stopping.
  • The installed release and architecture match the files you selected.
  • ADB and fastboot are no longer needed before you disconnect the phone.
  • Apps with strict security requirements were checked against their own support statements rather than assumed to work.
  • Push notifications were tested separately; MicroG users enabled Google Cloud Messaging.

Where to get device-specific instructions

Use the official installation page for your exact device for recovery commands, firmware, cable troubleshooting and reboot order. Use the official Google Apps page for the current package guidance, and consult the LineageOS FAQ for post-first-boot installation, integrity, FRP and notification explanations. If you need device-level troubleshooting, have the exact model, LineageOS version, architecture and recovery error available; without those details, a universal diagnosis is unsafe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Google Apps to run LineageOS?

No. LineageOS is designed to run without Google’s proprietary services. Install GApps only if you need the Play Store, Google Play services or applications that depend on them.

Which GApps package should I download?

Use the package listed for your LineageOS release and the architecture named on your exact device page. The current listing names MindTheGapps for LineageOS 21/Android 14, 22/Android 15 and 23/Android 16, with ARM and ARM64 variants; verify the listing when you download.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can I install GApps after the first boot?

Not by simply flashing a ZIP from the running system. Back up your data, factory-reset through the supported recovery, sideload the recommended LineageOS and matching GApps packages, and boot again. The reset erases user data.

Why does Play Store crash after I installed LineageOS?

First check whether Android was booted before GApps, then check release, architecture and recovery order. If the first boot happened without GApps, use the reset-and-reinstall route. Do not substitute a random older package.

Is a signature-verification warning during GApps installation an error?

The documented GApps add-on is not signed with LineageOS’s official key, so the expected device guide may show a warning. Continue only as that guide instructs, and never treat the warning as approval for an unknown ZIP.

Will GApps make banking or streaming apps pass Play Integrity?

No guarantee is possible. Devices may report unlocked-bootloader or verified-boot status, and LineageOS does not hide those signals. Check the device notes and the app provider’s requirements; another GApps package is not an official integrity fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if fastboot or ADB cannot see the phone?

Confirm the phone is in the mode required by the device guide, verify that ADB and fastboot are installed, then try another USB port and a known-good USB data cable. A charge-only cable cannot carry the required connection.

Why are push notifications missing?

The FAQ says push notifications require GApps or MicroG. If you use MicroG, enable Google Cloud Messaging in MicroG settings. Notification behavior is separate from whether the Play Store opens.

Do I have to buy a special cable for this installation?

No. Use your existing cable if it reliably carries data. Buy or borrow a compatible USB data cable only when the current cable is charge-only, damaged or failing detection; no particular brand is required.

Could Factory Reset Protection be causing the setup problem?

It can, especially if Google accounts were not removed from the stock system as the device instructions required. Symptoms vary, so consult the exact device support page instead of repeating wipes or flashing unrelated ZIPs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Match the GApps release and architecture to your exact LineageOS device page, install the ZIP in recovery immediately after LineageOS and before the first Android boot, and keep the model guide open for every device-specific command. If you already booted without GApps, back up, factory-reset and reinstall; expect data loss. GApps can restore Play Store services, but they cannot guarantee Play Integrity or compatibility with every application.
