Anthropic’s official Claude Desktop app can be installed on Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 using its recommended apt repository, or from a downloaded .deb package. Anthropic lists Linux support from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS onward for x64 and arm64; Ubuntu 26.04 is covered by that stated minimum, though Anthropic does not list it separately. Linux support is in beta.

Before you install

  • Use a supported architecture: x64 or arm64.
  • Choose the apt repository if you want app updates delivered through normal system package updates. Use the .deb route if you cannot add the repository.
  • Anthropic’s download FAQ says Chat is available on all plans; Claude Code and Cowork require Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise. Computer Use and Dictation are not available on Linux. Quick Entry works on X11 or requires the desktop GlobalShortcuts portal on native Wayland. See Anthropic’s download page for current feature and plan details.

Install Claude Desktop from Anthropic’s apt repository

This is Anthropic’s recommended Linux installation route. Repository installation lets updates arrive through your normal apt update workflow.

  1. Add Anthropic’s repository signing key:

    sudo curl -fsSLo /usr/share/keyrings/claude-desktop-archive-keyring.asc https://downloads.claude.ai/claude-desktop/key.asc
  2. Add the stable Claude Desktop repository:

echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/claude-desktop-archive-keyring.asc] https://downloads.claude.ai/claude-desktop/apt/stable stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/claude-desktop.list
  3. Refresh apt’s package list and install the app:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install claude-desktop

Anthropic’s complete installation instructions are in its Claude Desktop installation guide.

Optional: inspect the signing key

Launch and update

Open Claude from Ubuntu’s applications menu, or run claude-desktop in a terminal. Sign in when prompted. Claude Desktop does not update itself on Linux; update repository-installed copies through apt, for example:

Install from a downloaded .deb package

Anthropic also documents a direct .deb download as a fallback. Open the official download page, select the package that matches your computer’s architecture (x64 or arm64), and install the file from your Downloads folder.

sudo apt install ~/Downloads/claude-desktop_amd64.deb

Use the actual downloaded filename if it differs, including when installing the arm64 package. Installing a standalone .deb does not by itself add Anthropic’s apt repository, so it does not enroll the app in repository-based updates. To receive updates through apt, use the repository method or configure the repository as described in Anthropic’s installation guide.

Which installation method should you choose?

Method Best for Update behavior What to check
Anthropic apt repository Most Ubuntu users who can add a repository Updates arrive through normal apt package updates Use the documented repository commands and run apt updates to install updates.
Downloaded .deb A fallback when repository setup is not suitable Does not by itself configure repository-based updates Choose the package matching x64 or arm64 and substitute its exact filename in the install command.

Ubuntu support and Linux feature limits

Anthropic’s support material describes Linux support as Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer and identifies x64 and arm64 architectures. That version floor includes Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04, although Anthropic’s installation article does not name those releases individually. Linux Claude Desktop is currently described as beta; check the official download FAQ for current distribution support and feature availability.
