Install Claude Code using the official instructions for your operating system, then change its interface theme with /theme or /config. You can also create a custom theme using a JSON file in ~/.claude/themes/. Claude Code’s theme changes its own interface, not your terminal app’s color scheme. The official documentation does not describe a built-in chart feature or chart-specific configuration, so chart instructions depend on which feature or plugin you mean.
Install and verify Claude Code
Use Anthropic’s Claude Code getting started guide for the current installation steps for your operating system. It lists native installation as the recommended method and also documents Homebrew, WinGet, Linux package managers, and npm. Because commands and requirements can change, follow the guide for your platform rather than relying on an older installation command.
- Install Claude Code using the method documented for your operating system.
- Open a terminal and run
claudeto start Claude Code. - Check the installed version with
claude --version. For more detailed installation and settings diagnostics, runclaude doctor.
Choose a built-in Claude Code theme
In a Claude Code session, enter /theme to open the theme picker. You can also open /config and choose the theme option. Select a preset that is legible against your terminal’s background.

The automatic theme option detects whether the terminal background is light or dark and can follow operating-system appearance changes when the terminal supports reporting them. This changes Claude Code’s interface only; set the terminal application’s own palette in that application’s preferences. Choose a theme that fits your display
- Light or dark background: Choose a matching preset or use automatic mode if your terminal reports its appearance.
- Accessibility: Try the light- or dark-daltonized presets if they better suit your color-vision needs.
- ANSI compatibility: The light-ansi and dark-ansi presets are options when you want ANSI colors rather than relying on a full RGB palette.
- Specific colors: Create a custom theme when you want to adjust individual interface colors.
Create or edit a custom theme
From /theme, choose New custom theme…, name the theme, and select the color tokens to override. The editor provides a live preview. To edit a custom theme already in the picker, highlight it and press Ctrl+E.
Custom theme files are stored in ~/.claude/themes/. A file named dracula.json has the theme slug dracula; selecting it saves the preference as custom:dracula. A theme file can define a display name, a base preset, and color overrides:

namesets the theme’s display label.baseselects a preset. The documented choices aredark,light,dark-daltonized,light-daltonized,dark-ansi, andlight-ansi. If omitted, the base defaults todark.overridesmaps color-token names to values. Documented formats include hex (#rrggbbor#rgb),rgb(r,g,b),ansi256(n), and named ANSI colors such asansi:redoransi:cyanBright.
Any token you leave out inherits its color from the base preset. Unknown token names and invalid color values are ignored, so check the token reference in the official terminal configuration guide when adding overrides. The documented token groups cover text and accents, status colors, input borders and mode indicators, diff rendering, fullscreen backgrounds and selection, usage meters and speaker labels, and shimmer or subagent colors. Examples include claude for the primary accent, text for foreground text, success, error, and warning for status, promptBorder for the input border, and diffAdded and diffRemoved for diff backgrounds.

Claude Code watches the theme directory and reloads edits to theme files during a running session. If the directory did not exist when Claude Code started, restart Claude Code after creating the first theme file; later edits can take effect without restarting.

Know where Claude Code settings are stored
The theme picker is the simplest route for theme selection. For other settings, use the appropriate strict-JSON settings file or the available options in /config. Anthropic documents the scopes and precedence in its settings files and precedence guide.

On Windows, ~ refers to your user profile directory. /config exposes some personal options, including theme, but not every settings key. Use /status to see which settings sources are loaded. Many changes reload when a settings file changes, but some settings are read only at session start; check the relevant setting’s reference entry if an edit does not take effect.

Keep terminal colors and terminal setup separate
Claude Code themes control the Claude Code interface. They do not change the terminal application’s palette; adjust that in the terminal’s own settings. The /terminal-setup command addresses terminal key behavior, such as Shift+Enter, rather than installing Claude Code themes. Availability and steps depend on the terminal and version, so consult the official terminal guide for your setup.
What about charts in Claude Code?
The official installation, terminal configuration, and settings documentation does not describe a built-in Claude Code charts feature, a chart configuration command, or a required chart package. That does not establish that no third-party extension or separate workflow exists. If by “charts” you mean a particular plugin or feature, identify it before following chart-specific setup instructions; the documented theme and color settings alone do not configure charts.
