VLC Media Player is a free, open-source player that handles most video and audio formats without a separate codec pack. On a typical Windows 11 computer, install the standard 64-bit version from VideoLAN, then use VLC’s Media menu to open local files, discs, network streams, and conversion tools.
This guide covers installation, playback, subtitles, default file associations, useful shortcuts, conversion, and fixes for common VLC problems.
Download the correct VLC version for Windows 11
Download VLC only from the official VideoLAN Windows download page. The page currently lists VLC 3.0.23 and separate packages for 32-bit, 64-bit, and ARM64 Windows systems.

If you are unsure which processor architecture your PC uses, open Settings > System > About and check System type. Most Windows 11 Intel and AMD installations are 64-bit. Do not download VLC from a third-party software site or install a codec pack simply to use VLC; VLC includes its own codecs.

How to install VLC Media Player on Windows 11
- Open the official VideoLAN download page.
- Select Installer for 64bit version, or select the ARM64 installer if your Windows 11 device uses an ARM processor.
- When the download completes, open the setup file from your browser’s Downloads folder.
- Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt by selecting Yes.
- Choose the installer language and select OK.
- On the welcome screen, select Next.
- Read the license information and select Next.
- Review the components and shortcuts. The default selection is suitable for most people, so select Next unless you need to change it.
- Confirm the installation folder. Select Browse if VLC must be installed somewhere other than the default location, then select Install.
- Wait for the installation to finish. Select Show details if you want to see the individual installation operations.
- Leave Run VLC media player selected if you want to launch VLC immediately, then select Finish.
The exact component list can vary slightly between VLC installer builds. The normal EXE installer is the easiest option for an individual Windows 11 user. The MSI package is more appropriate for administrators deploying VLC across multiple computers, while ZIP and 7-Zip downloads are useful when you want a portable-style copy rather than Start menu and file-association setup.
Start and close VLC
To start VLC, press the Windows key, type VLC, and select VLC media player. If the installer created shortcuts, you can also open it from the VideoLAN folder in the Start menu.
Close VLC with the window’s Close button, Alt+F4, or Media > Quit. The VLC quit shortcut is Ctrl+Q.

Play a video or audio file
Open a file from VLC
- Open VLC.
- Select Media > Open File.
- Select the video or audio file.
- Select Open.
VLC starts playback immediately. You can also drag a file from File Explorer into VLC’s main window or playlist area.
Open several files
For a group of files, select Media > Open Multiple Files. This is also the option to use when you want to add a separate audio track. In the Open Media dialog, select Show more options or Play another media synchronously when those controls are needed.
Play a DVD, CD, VCD, or Blu-ray
- Insert the disc into the computer.
- In VLC, select Media > Open Disc.
- Select the media type: DVD, Blu-ray, Audio CD, or SVCD/VCD.
- Select the optical drive in the Disc Device list.
- Select Play.
Depending on the disc type, the dialog may let you select a title, chapter, audio track, or subtitle track. No DVD menus can be useful when a DVD menu fails to load.
VLC does not guarantee playback of every commercially copy-protected Blu-ray. Such discs may require additional files and configuration, and DVD playback can also be affected by the drive’s region-control behavior. VLC cannot burn CDs, DVDs, HD DVDs, or Blu-ray discs.

Open a network stream
- Select Media > Open Network Stream.
- Enter the stream URL.
- Select Play.
The address must point to a media stream that VLC can access and decode. A URL for a webpage is not necessarily a direct stream URL. If a website address opens a page in a browser rather than playing in VLC, you probably need the service’s direct stream address instead.
Understand VLC’s main controls
The standard VLC window includes a menu bar, video display area, playback controls, position slider, volume controls, and status information. For a local file, the position slider shows progress through the file. For some live streams, VLC cannot determine the total duration, so the slider may not behave like a normal seek bar.
Full-screen playback
Select Video > Full Screen or press F. Press Esc to leave full screen.
Change the audio track or output device
- To select a language or alternate audio track, use Audio > Audio Track.
- To turn audio off, choose Disable in the Audio Track menu.
- To change the speaker, headphones, or other output, use Audio > Audio Device.
Change the aspect ratio, crop, or zoom
Use the Video menu to choose Aspect Ratio, Crop, or Zoom. Available aspect-ratio choices include Default, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10, along with several widescreen ratios. Use Default when you want VLC to use the media’s normal dimensions.

Select or load subtitles
- To select a subtitle track already included in the file, choose Subtitle > Subtitle Track.
- To turn subtitles off, choose Subtitle > Subtitle Track > Disable.
- To load a separate subtitle file, choose Subtitle > Add Subtitle File.
VLC supports common subtitle formats including .srt, .ass, .ssa, .sub, .idx, .smi, and several others. For VobSub subtitles, select the .idx file rather than the accompanying .sub file.
Some older VLC instructions place subtitle controls under Video. In the current Windows interface, look for the separate Subtitle menu.
Change subtitle size and font
- Select Tools > Preferences.
- Select Subtitles/OSD.
- Change Font, Font size, or another subtitle-rendering option.
- Select Save.
- Restart playback, or restart VLC if the change does not appear immediately.

Each press changes the offset by 50 milliseconds. You can also select Tools > Track Synchronization and enter an adjustment directly.
For subtitles:
- Press
Gto move subtitles earlier. - Press
Hto delay subtitles.
Subtitle timing also changes in 50-millisecond steps.
Take a screenshot from a video
Pause the video at the required frame and select Video > Take Snapshot. VLC saves snapshots as PNG files by default, usually in C:Users<username>Pictures. The documented Windows shortcut is Shift+S. If the shortcut does not work in your build, use the menu command; VLC documentation has also listed other snapshot shortcuts in older versions.
Convert a video or audio file
- Select Media > Convert/Save.
- Select Add, choose the source file, and select Open.
- Select Convert/Save.
- Choose an output format from the Profile list.
- Enter the destination path and file name in the destination field. Include the appropriate extension, such as
.mp4or.mp3. - Select Start.
Conversion may re-encode the media, so it is not necessarily lossless. The selected profile controls the output container, video codec, audio codec, and related settings.
Make VLC the default player in Windows 11
Windows 11 assigns default applications mainly by file extension or protocol. The current method is not a VLC preference inside the program.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Default apps.
- Search for an extension such as
.mp4,.mkv, or.mp3, or search for VLC media player. - Select the current application beside the file type.
- Choose VLC media player.
To change one association from File Explorer, right-click a file and select Open with > Choose another app. Select VLC and enable Always use this app to open [extension] files if Windows displays that option. Repeat the process for each extension you want VLC to handle.

Select Save after making a change. Some settings require VLC or the current stream to be restarted.

VLC opens, but the video is black, white, or distorted
- Update the graphics driver through your computer manufacturer or graphics-card manufacturer.
- In VLC, select Tools > Preferences > Video.
- Test a different video-output configuration.
- Select Save and restart VLC.
Video-output problems are commonly related to the display driver or the selected output configuration. Do not change several unrelated advanced settings at once; otherwise it becomes difficult to identify the setting that fixed the problem.
Hardware decoding creates artifacts or playback errors
For image errors in H.264 or VC-1 video, open Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs and test the Use GPU accelerated decoding setting in both states. Select Save and restart VLC after changing it. Hardware decoding can improve performance on some systems but cause problems on others.
H.264 playback is choppy
Possible causes include a heavily loaded CPU, graphics-driver problems, and unsuitable decoding settings. For troubleshooting, VideoLAN documents options under Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs, including the H.264 in-loop deblocking setting and FFmpeg thread settings. Increasing disc-caching values can also help with problematic disc playback. These changes can reduce image quality or alter playback behavior, so restore the defaults if they do not help.
VLC crashes or will not start
If VLC opens, reset its preferences:
- Select Tools > Preferences.
- Select Reset Preferences.
- Select Save.
- Restart VLC.
If VLC will not start, use the VideoLAN > Reset VLC media preferences shortcut in the Start menu if it is available. As a last resort, close VLC and delete its settings folder under %appdata%. This removes custom VLC settings, so use it only after trying the reset option.
Subtitles contain the wrong characters
- Open Tools > Preferences.
- Select Subtitles/OSD.
- Change Default encoding.
- Select Save and restart playback.
The correct encoding depends on how the subtitle file was created. If one encoding produces incorrect characters, test another rather than changing the video settings.
An AVI file says it is broken
The message “The AVI file is broken. Seeking not work correctly. Do you want to try to repair this?” indicates structural problems in the AVI file. Repairing the index may improve seeking, but the file can remain unreliable in other players.

For persistent behavior, select Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs > Demuxers > AVI, then change Force index creation from Ask to Always fix or Never fix.
An MP4 or 3GP file has video but no audio
Some mobile-phone files that use AMR audio do not work correctly in current stable VLC versions. This is a file- or codec-specific limitation; installing a Windows codec pack is not the normal fix. Try another copy of the file or convert the audio with a dedicated media-conversion tool.
Frequently misunderstood VLC features
- VLC does not need a codec pack. It includes its own codecs for common formats.
- VLC does not burn discs. It can play, stream, and convert media, but it cannot write CDs, DVDs, HD DVDs, or Blu-ray discs.
- Blu-ray playback is not guaranteed. Commercial copy-protected discs may need additional configuration.
- Default-player settings belong in Windows 11. Use Settings > Apps > Default apps, not older instructions that refer to a VLC “Set up associations” button.
