Apple Devices is Apple’s current Windows 11 app for managing an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. It handles device updates, local and iCloud backup settings, restores, content synchronization, and Wi-Fi syncing after an initial cable connection.
It does not replace every Apple application on Windows. Apple Music manages the music library, Apple TV manages movies and TV shows, and iTunes remains relevant for podcasts and audiobooks. Install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store, then connect your Apple device with a data-capable USB or USB-C cable.
What the Apple Devices app does
Apple Devices is the Windows management app for supported iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch functions. From the app, you can:

Apple divides its Windows software into separate apps. Apple Devices manages the hardware, Apple Music manages music, and Apple TV manages films and television programmes. You do not need to install iTunes simply to update, back up, restore, or manage an iPhone or iPad in Apple Devices.

Install Apple Devices on Windows 11
- Open the Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Search for Apple Devices.
- Select the Apple Devices app published by Apple.
- Select Get.
- When installation finishes, select Open, or launch Apple Devices from the Start menu.
Install the companion apps if you plan to synchronize media:

Apple Devices can still manage updates, backups, restores, and other hardware functions without Apple Music or Apple TV. The companion apps are needed for their respective media libraries.
If Microsoft Store cannot find or install Apple Devices
Microsoft Store availability can be affected by the PC’s compatibility, country or region, Microsoft Family settings, Store-client availability, or recently installed Windows updates. Restart Windows if updates were installed but the PC has not yet been restarted.
You can also reset the Microsoft Store cache:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
- Search for Apple Devices again.
Connect an iPhone or iPad
- Open Apple Devices.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad with a USB or USB-C cable.
- Unlock the Apple device and leave the Home Screen visible.
- If Trust This Computer? appears, tap Trust and enter the device passcode.
- Select the device when it appears in the Apple Devices sidebar.
Use a cable that supports both data transfer and charging. A charge-only cable may charge the iPhone or iPad without allowing Windows to detect it.
Understand the Apple Devices interface
Selecting the device in the sidebar displays its management areas. The exact options can vary by device and software version.

Update an iPhone or iPad from Windows 11
- Connect and unlock the device.
- Select it in the Apple Devices sidebar.
- Open General.
- Select Check for Update, if that button is displayed.
- If an update is available, select Update.
- Follow the onscreen instructions and keep the cable connected until the update completes.
The Update button may not appear until you select Check for Update. If the device is not shown, solve the USB, trust, or detection problem before attempting the update.
Back up an iPhone or iPad to the Windows PC
- Connect the device and select it in the sidebar.
- Select General.
- Under the backup options, select Back up all of the data on your [device] to this computer.
- For a password-protected backup, select Encrypt local backup.
- Select Backup Now.
An encrypted local backup includes additional protected information, but it requires a password. Apple cannot use an encrypted backup if you forget that password, so store it somewhere safe.

Back up to iCloud
In General, select Back up your most important data on your [device] to iCloud. This changes the backup destination to iCloud. The backup itself is performed by the Apple device rather than as a file copied to the Windows PC.
View local backups
After creating a local backup, select Manage Backups. This is where Apple Devices lists local backup files and lets you manage multiple backups.
Restore from a backup
- Connect the Apple device.
- Select it in the Apple Devices sidebar.
- Open General.
- Select Restore Backup.
- Open the Restore Backup pop-up menu.
- Choose the required backup.
- Select Restore.
- Enter the encrypted-backup password if requested.
An encrypted backup cannot be restored without its password. Do not disconnect the device while the restore is in progress.
Restore an iPhone or iPad to factory settings
A factory restore erases the device’s information and settings and reinstalls its Apple operating system. Back up anything you may need before continuing.

Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My [device]
Then:
- Connect the iPhone or iPad by USB or USB-C.
- Select the device in Apple Devices.
- Select General.
- Select Restore [device], such as Restore iPhone or Restore iPad.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
This is a destructive operation. It does not merely reinstall Windows-side Apple software; it erases the Apple device.
Sync music, movies, TV shows, and photos
- Connect the device and select it in the sidebar.
- Select Music, Movies, TV Shows, or Photos.
- Select the checkbox labelled Sync [content type] onto [device name]. For example,
Sync movies onto iPhone. - Choose whether to sync all content or only selected content.
- Repeat the process in other content categories if required.
- Select Apply.
The storage bar at the bottom of the Apple Devices window shows the expected free space after synchronization. Check it before selecting a large media library.

Why a sync option may be missing
iCloud can control a content category instead of Apple Devices. For example, iCloud Photos can disable local photo-sync controls, while Sync Library can prevent local music syncing through Apple Devices. You generally need to choose either the iCloud-managed method or local synchronization for that category.
Turn on automatic syncing
- Connect and select the device.
- Open General.
- Find the Options section.
- Select Automatically sync when this [device] is connected.
- Select Apply.
For manual control, leave this option cleared. Apple Devices will then apply selected content only when you choose Apply.
Set up Wi-Fi syncing
Wi-Fi syncing cannot be configured as a first-time connection. The initial setup requires a USB or USB-C cable, and the Apple device must run iOS 5 or later.
- Connect the device to the Windows PC with a USB or USB-C cable.
- Select it in the Apple Devices sidebar.
- Open General.
- Select Show this [device] when on Wi-Fi.
- Configure the content-syncing options you want to use.
- Select Apply.
- Disconnect the cable.
- Keep the Windows PC and Apple device connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Wi-Fi syncing is therefore a convenience after the wired connection has been authorised; it is not a replacement for the initial USB setup.
Safely disconnect the device
Before unplugging a connected iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, select the Eject button next to the device in the Apple Devices sidebar. Then disconnect the cable.

Import photos and videos into Windows 11
Apple Devices helps establish the trusted USB connection, but photo importing is performed through the Windows Photos app rather than an Apple Devices photo browser.
- Install Apple Devices from Microsoft Store.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad with a USB data cable.
- Unlock the device.
- Tap Trust or Allow if prompted.
- Open the Windows Photos app and use its import option.
If iCloud Photos is enabled, the full-resolution originals may need to be downloaded to the iPhone or iPad before USB import can access them.

For better compatibility with Windows, set new camera captures to:
Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible
This makes new photos use JPEG and videos use H.264. It does not convert files already saved on the device.

Apple Devices can transfer selected files to apps that support Apple’s file-sharing feature. It is not a general-purpose file manager that exposes unrestricted access to the iPhone or iPad’s internal storage.
Use the Windows Photos app or iCloud Photos for ordinary photos and videos. For documents, use iCloud Drive, another cloud-storage service, email, or an iPhone/iPad app that supports Apple Devices file sharing.

Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that the device is charging and chimes or vibrates when connected.
- Unlock it and leave the Home Screen visible.
- Tap Trust when the trust prompt appears, then enter the passcode.
- Replace the cable with one known to support charging and data.
- Try another USB port on the PC.
- Try another cable.
- Check the Apple device’s charging port for debris.
- Install available Windows updates and restart Windows.
- Install available iOS or iPadOS updates.
- Update Apple software for Windows.
- Check and update relevant drivers through Windows Device Manager.
- Temporarily investigate software conflicts if another device-management or security program is interfering.
The trust prompt was dismissed
If you selected Don’t Trust, or the prompt no longer appears, reset the Apple device’s location and privacy settings using Apple’s trust-computer troubleshooting procedure. This causes the trust prompt to be shown again. You will need to reconnect the device and choose Trust.
The device charges but is not detected
Charging proves only that the cable and port can deliver power. It does not prove that data transfer works. Try a different data-capable cable and another USB port before troubleshooting drivers or reinstalling software.

Apple’s current Windows software uses Apple Devices for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch management. iTunes remains available for podcasts and audiobooks, but it is not required for the device-management functions covered here. If detection fails on a PC with older Apple software installed, update Apple software and Windows drivers and check for conflicts.

Do I need iTunes to use Apple Devices on Windows 11?
No. Apple Devices is the current app for updating, backing up, restoring, managing, and syncing supported iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. iTunes remains relevant for podcasts and audiobooks.
Why is my iPhone charging but not appearing in Apple Devices?
The cable may support charging but not data transfer. Try a known data-capable cable, another USB port, and an unlocked iPhone with the Home Screen visible. Also accept the Trust This Computer prompt.
Can Apple Devices import photos from an iPhone?
Apple Devices establishes the Windows connection, but the actual import is performed through the Windows Photos app. If iCloud Photos is enabled, full-resolution originals may need to be downloaded to the iPhone first.
Can I sync an iPhone over Wi-Fi without using a cable?
Not for the initial setup. Connect the device by USB or USB-C, select General, enable Show this [device] when on Wi-Fi, select Apply, and then keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi network.
Where are local iPhone backups managed?
Select the device in Apple Devices, open General, and select Manage Backups after creating a local backup.
What happens when I select Restore iPhone?
The operation erases the iPhone’s information and settings and restores its operating system. Back up first and turn off Find My iPhone before starting.
