You can sideload a launcher app onto some older Fire TV Sticks, but installing it does not necessarily replace Amazon’s home screen or make the Home button open it. Amazon documents ADB installation for app development and testing—not a supported way to take over the Fire TV interface. Treat launcher replacement as a model- and Fire OS-specific experiment, and confirm your exact device and software version before changing settings.
Check your Fire TV Stick model and Fire OS version first
“Older Fire TV Stick” can mean devices with different software and compatibility. Amazon’s Fire OS Overview maps device models to Fire OS and Android versions. For example, Amazon lists the Fire TV Stick 2nd Generation (2016–2019) with Fire OS 5 and Android 5.1 API 22. That example does not identify the software installed on every older Stick.
On your Fire TV, open Settings > My Fire TV > About and note the device name and software version shown. Menu wording may vary by software version. Compare the device against Amazon’s overview and, if relevant, its Fire OS 6 developer guide. Check the installed build as well as the model: a model family alone may not tell you which instructions or launcher version will work.

If the Stick is new or has been reset, first complete Amazon’s on-screen setup. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions cover connecting the device to an HDMI-equipped TV, signing in to an Amazon account, and connecting to Wi-Fi.

Make sure you can open Settings and return to the standard Amazon home interface before trying launcher changes. Keep that access available throughout the process; the community instructions do not establish one universal recovery procedure for every model or software build.
Understand what sideloading does—and does not do
Sideloading means installing an app from outside the Amazon Appstore. Amazon’s ADB installation documentation describes this as a developer method for installing and running apps, including an ADB command in the form adb install <path-to-apk-file>.

That command installs an APK; it does not, by itself, make the app Fire TV’s default launcher. Replacing the home screen, changing what happens when you press Home, or launching a different interface on boot or wake can involve separate tools, permissions, or package changes. Amazon’s ADB guide does not endorse those changes as a consumer launcher-replacement method.

Choose a launcher method only after checking exact-build compatibility
Community guides discuss launchers such as Wolf Launcher and Projectivy, sometimes alongside Launcher Manager or ADB-related steps. Those reports describe particular configurations rather than a universal procedure. App versions, package names, permissions, and Fire OS behavior can differ, so do not assume a guide for one Stick or build applies to yours.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- Find instructions that explicitly match your Stick generation and installed Fire OS version.
- Check when the instructions were written and whether they address your software build; updates can change behavior.
- Distinguish instructions for installing a launcher app from instructions for redirecting Home, boot, or wake behavior.
- Before making package or settings changes, verify you can still reach Settings and the Amazon interface.
Community discussions about launcher setup, Wolf Launcher and Projectivy, and behavior after updates are useful as leads for model-specific checking, not authoritative compatibility guarantees. Their reported outcomes are anecdotal and may no longer match current software.

Even if the launcher app installs and opens, the Fire TV may continue to show Amazon’s home screen when you press Home, restart the Stick, or wake it. Community reports describe inconsistent behavior and cases where updates disrupted launcher setups. There is no established success rate or performance benchmark for these methods, so neither guaranteed takeover nor a specific speed improvement can be promised.

If you proceed, keep the setup reversible: avoid changes you cannot explain, retain access to the device’s normal settings, and stop if instructions do not match your installed build. If an update changes the behavior, re-check compatibility for the new software version instead of repeating older commands blindly.
