Yes—an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc can be used to claim a digital license for installation on a disc-free Xbox Series S. You need access to a disc-drive Xbox One or Series X to insert the disc and launch the game first. Then sign in to the account that received the license on the Series S and download the game. Keep the qualifying disc: Microsoft’s rules make the license conditional on continued possession of it.
What you need before you start
- A supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc. Not every disc qualifies, and eligibility may change.
- Access to an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive for the claim step. You can use a console you own or borrow one; buying a helper console is not required if you can access one.
- The Microsoft account that will receive the digital license, and access to that account on the disc-free Xbox.
- The qualifying disc, which Microsoft says you must continue to possess while relying on this license.
Xbox described the feature as supporting “thousands” of titles, not a fixed catalog or a guarantee that a particular disc will work. Check eligibility when you try to claim it. Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement named Xbox One and Xbox Series X as claim devices: Xbox Wire: Your Discs. Now Also Digital.
Claim the digital license with a disc-drive Xbox
- Sign in on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X using the Microsoft account you want associated with the license.
- Insert the supported game disc into the console.
- Launch the game from the console. This is the disc-to-digital claim step; simply copying or installing game files does not claim a license.
- After the entitlement is available to the account, eject and keep the qualifying disc.
Microsoft’s announcement says to insert a supported disc and launch the game. If the title does not qualify or no entitlement appears, do not assume that the disc has been converted; eligibility can depend on technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors. Microsoft may add or remove specific-disc eligibility under its Digital Goods usage rules.

Install and play it on Xbox Series S
- On the Series S, sign in with the same Microsoft account that received the license.
- Open your digital game library or the Ready to Install list and locate the game.
- Select the game and choose the install/download option shown on screen.
- When the download and installation finish, launch the game from the console.
Series S supports digital games only; it cannot read the disc itself. Xbox states this applies to its 512 GB and 1 TB Series S configurations. See the Xbox Series S product page for its disc-free design and storage details.

What the disc-to-digital license does—and does not do
This is distinct from ordinary disc installation. With normal disc play, a compatible game installs from the disc, but you keep the disc in the drive as the physical access check when playing. Disc-to-digital instead creates a limited digital license after the supported claim process, so the Series S can download and run the game without a disc drive.
The distinction does not make the disc irrelevant. Microsoft’s current rules say the disc-to-digital license depends on continued possession of the qualifying disc; Microsoft may revalidate eligibility, and access can be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. The digital license is not separately transferable from the disc. Review Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules for the applicable terms.

Which console can perform the claim?
| Option | Can claim a qualifying disc? | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One with a disc drive | Yes, for an eligible Xbox One disc and supported title. | Use one you already own or can borrow; it is a named claim device. |
| Xbox Series X | Yes, for an eligible Xbox Series X disc and supported title. | Use one you already own or can borrow; it is the newer named claim device and has a UHD Blu-ray drive. |
| Xbox Series S | No. It has no disc drive and cannot perform the physical-disc step. | Use it as the destination for installing the digital entitlement after the claim. |
These are the claim-device choices named by Xbox; title eligibility still applies. If you are considering acquiring a console only for this step, weigh that cost against borrowing or using a console already in your household.

- Confirm the account. Check that the Series S is signed in to the same Microsoft account used during the claim.
- Check eligibility again. Not all discs qualify, and Microsoft says eligibility can change. A disc that cannot claim a license should not be treated as converted.
- Distinguish installation from ownership. Copying installed files, moving a game to USB storage, attaching an external optical drive, or using cloud saves does not create a game license.
- Use another legitimate digital route. If you already own a digital license, install from that account’s library. Otherwise, a digital purchase may provide access without the disc-to-digital claim process.
For conventional backward-compatible disc games, Xbox’s compatibility guidance describes installing with the disc and keeping it in the drive to play: Xbox Backward Compatible Games. That workflow is not a substitute for a disc-to-digital entitlement on a Series S.
