The Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink fits within Sony’s published PS5 M.2 size limits: Samsung lists maximum dimensions of 80.15 × 25 × 8.88 mm, while Sony allows an M.2 drive and cooling structure up to 110 mm long, 25 mm wide, and 11.25 mm thick overall. Install it in the 2280 position, and make sure the expansion-slot cover closes normally—never force it.
Does the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink fit in a PS5?
Yes, its published maximum dimensions fall within Sony’s M.2 envelope. Samsung’s 990 PRO with Heatsink datasheet gives maximum dimensions of 80.15 mm long, 25 mm wide, and 8.88 mm high. Sony’s limits are 110 mm long, 25 mm wide, and 11.25 mm total thickness, including the cooling structure. The drive is at Sony’s maximum width, so confirm the exact heatsink SKU you have rather than relying on dimensions for a different variant. Samsung’s datasheet and Sony’s compatibility guidance are the relevant references.
Samsung also lists 80 × 24.3 × 8.2 mm for the 2TB version on its Canadian product page; the datasheet’s slightly larger figures are the conservative dimensions to use for a clearance check. Samsung Canada’s 2TB listing applies to that specific regional capacity and SKU.
Sony cautions that it cannot guarantee every third-party drive that meets the published specifications will work. Its practical fit check is the expansion-slot cover: if it does not close properly, the cooling structure may exceed the size requirements. PlayStation Support says, “If the expansion slot cover doesn’t close properly, your cooling structure probably exceeds the size requirements.”

Check the drive and clearance requirements
Sony requires an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 drive with an M Key connector. The 990 PRO with Heatsink is listed by Samsung as PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0, and M.2 2280; Samsung lists PlayStation 5 among its applications. Samsung’s sequential-read rating is up to 7,450 MB/s, above Sony’s recommended minimum of 5,500 MB/s. That is a manufacturer rating, not a PS5 test or a guarantee that games will perform exactly like they do on the console’s internal SSD. Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink specifications; Sony M.2 requirements.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Supported length: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110; maximum length 110 mm.
- Width: up to 25 mm.
- Total thickness: up to 11.25 mm, including the cooling structure; Sony specifies up to 8.0 mm above and 2.45 mm below the board.
- Cooling: an effective heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, is required. Sony supports single- and double-sided drives but not M.2 SATA.
These are Sony’s published requirements and recommendation; consult its current compatibility guidance for details.

Choose the correct 990 PRO version
The 990 PRO is sold both with and without an integrated heatsink. The with-heatsink version already has a cooling structure and is the simpler route for this installation. A bare 990 PRO still needs a compatible cooling structure that stays within Sony’s total dimensions. Do not stack an aftermarket heatsink over the integrated one. Check the package or product listing for the exact capacity, heatsink variant, and regional SKU; Samsung’s product information distinguishes the with-heatsink model, and Sony’s dimensional requirements apply to the assembled drive and cooler.

- Prepare the console. Update the PS5 system software, shut the console down fully, unplug it, and let it cool. Remove the outer cover according to the instructions for your model, then remove the expansion-slot cover.
- Set the spacer. Remove the M.2 screw and spacer, then place the spacer in the hole marked 2280.
- Insert the SSD. Hold the drive by its edge, align the connector notch, and insert it firmly at an upward angle until it is fully seated.
- Fasten it level. Lower the drive onto the spacer and secure it with the screw. Check that the board lies level and the heatsink does not obstruct the screw.
- Close the console. Refit the expansion-slot cover and its screw, then refit the outer cover and reconnect the console. The expansion-slot cover should close normally.
- Format the drive. At first startup, follow the on-screen M.2 format guide. Formatting erases the drive’s contents, so use a new or backed-up SSD. Do not power off the console while it formats or saves data.
If the expansion-slot cover will not close
Stop rather than pressing the cover into place. Recheck that the SSD is fully seated, lowered onto the 2280 spacer, and secured correctly. Confirm that the heatsink is not obstructing the screw and that the exact assembled drive dimensions stay within Sony’s limits. If the cover still will not close normally, remove the drive and verify its variant and dimensions against the PS5 model’s instructions. Sony warns that an M.2 drive without a cooling structure can overheat, and continued use may cause operation failure; the drive must have effective cooling as well as adequate clearance.
