To buy a used digital camera with confidence, inspect the specific body and any included lens, test its core functions, check the sensor safely, and weigh its shutter count against that exact model—not a universal cutoff. A low count or clean-looking exterior cannot prove that a camera is reliable.
Before you meet the seller or place an order
Confirm the exact camera model and what the listing includes. A body-only listing is not the same deal as a kit with a compatible lens, battery, charger, caps, and other accessories. Account for anything missing in your total cost.
Ask how the camera was used, whether it was dropped or exposed to moisture, and whether the shutter, sensor, mount, or main board has been repaired. Request documentation for major repairs. For a remote purchase, ask for current photos and, if possible, an original test image rather than relying only on listing photos.

Inspect the body for damage
Check the corners and grip, screen hinge, viewfinder housing, battery door, hot shoe, tripod socket, ports, card slots, and lens mount. Look for dents, corrosion, looseness, or signs of liquid exposure. Ordinary paint wear is not equivalent to impact damage near a mount or evidence of moisture.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
Cosmetic condition is only one part of the assessment: a camera can look tidy and still have a faulty control, slot, or other function. Conversely, exterior wear alone does not establish that the camera is defective.
Check the sensor without touching it
Take a photo of a plain, bright surface using the highest available f-number, then inspect the image for dark spots. Dust may appear as spots in the photo, but one test image cannot establish permanent sensor damage. Sony’s cleaning guidance says, “Don’t touch the surface of the image sensor or blow on it too hard.” Sony’s sensor-cleaning guidance explains the handling precaution.
Rank #2
- 28x optical zoom, 56x Dynamic Fine Zooms
- 20.2-MP CCD sensor for bright, sharp photos and HD videos
- Frame coverage: Approx. 99% horizontal and vertical (compared to actual picture)
- HD 720p videos with sound bring your memories to life
- Includes: LR6/L40 (AA-size) alkaline batteries (x4) , Lens Cap LC-CP25 (with cord), USB Cable UC-E16, Camera Strap
Do not touch or brush the sensor during an inspection. If cleaning is needed, follow the exact camera model’s manual. Canon’s EOS 50D manual warns that its sensor surface is extremely delicate and that a brush or canned air can cause damage; those model-specific cleaning details should not be assumed to apply identically to every camera. See the Canon EOS 50D manual.

Bring a compatible lens and suitable memory card if inspecting in person. Take several images and test the functions that matter to you:
Rank #3
- 16 effective megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor
- 3-inch TFT color LCD with wide viewing angle
- DIGIC 4 image processor
- 720p HD video in stereo sound with a dedicated movie button
- 24mm wide-angle lens with powerful 30x optical zoom and optical image stabilizer
- Autofocus and shutter response
- Burst shooting and image playback
- Buttons, dials, display, and viewfinder
- Flash, if present
- Ports and card slots
- Stabilisation, if fitted, and video, if you plan to use it
Review test images at magnification. A quick power-on check will not reveal every problem with focus, controls, burst operation, slots, or ports. Controls and features differ by model, so consult that camera’s manual if you are unsure how to exercise a function.
Interpret shutter count against the exact model
Ask how the shutter count was obtained and when it was recorded. If the manufacturer publishes a rating for that exact model, use it as context—not a guarantee of remaining life or a pass/fail threshold. There is no reliable universal “safe” count for all used cameras.
Rank #4
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
A count does not describe the whole operating history or prove the camera is sound. Electronic-shutter use and video operation can also complicate what a mechanical shutter count tells you. A low number is not a substitute for checking condition, history, and functions.
Assess the lens and camera system
If a lens is included, inspect it for visible scratches, haze, fungus, or other damage. Test its autofocus and controls on the body if possible. Confirm that the lens mount and electronic functions are compatible with the camera you intend to use.
Best Value
- Increased IR sensitivity for astrophotography
- 18.0 MP CMOS sensor, ISO 100-6400, DIGIC 4 Image Processor
- Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD
- Remote controller adapter
- Compatible with EF and EF-S lenses
Keep a lens issue separate from a body fault: a lens may be replaceable, but its replacement or repair cost still belongs in the deal calculation. Confirm that included accessories are present and usable rather than assuming the listing’s kit description covers everything you need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the whole deal, including seller terms
When comparing two or more examples, judge them on the same practical factors rather than price or cosmetic grade alone:
- Sensor and image condition
- Working autofocus, controls, shutter, card slots, and ports
- Wear, impact damage, or signs of moisture
- Shutter count relative to the exact model and its use history
- Documentation for repairs
- Lens mount, included lens, and accessories
- Inspection opportunity, return terms, and warranty, if offered
- Total price after likely repairs or missing items
Seller terms vary by seller and location; do not assume a universal return right or warranty. Read the current listing and terms before paying. If important functions cannot be tested, account for that uncertainty in the price or walk away. If the seller’s account conflicts with the camera’s condition or available evidence, treat the inconsistency as a risk rather than overlooking it.
