To insert a physical SIM, confirm your phone has a SIM tray, match the card’s cut corner to the tray, and slide the tray back in gently. To move service to another phone, check whether your carrier and new device support that SIM; eSIM transfers follow model- and carrier-specific steps. If the phone says “No SIM,” first check activation, restart, and reseat an undamaged physical card before contacting your carrier or arranging device service.
How to insert or remove a physical SIM card
SIM tray locations, card formats, and even whether a tray exists vary by phone model and regional version. Some phones use eSIM only. Check the manual or manufacturer support page for your exact model before opening anything.
- Confirm the tray and card format. Use the model-specific instructions to verify that your phone accepts a physical SIM and which size it uses.
- Power down if the manufacturer recommends it. There is no universal power-off rule in the instructions covered here, so follow your phone’s manual.
- Release the tray. Insert a SIM eject tool or suitable straight paper clip gently into the small tray hole. Keep it straight; do not probe other openings or force a jammed tray.
- Seat the SIM. Match its angled corner to the tray’s shape and make sure it lies flat. Use only the tray intended for that phone.
- Reinsert the tray. Slide it back in the same orientation, gently and fully. Restart the phone if needed and allow time for it to register on the network.
Apple’s iPhone instructions describe releasing the tray with a paper clip or SIM eject tool and matching the card’s angled corner; tray shape and orientation can differ by model and country. Apple says not to force a resistant tray. Apple’s iPhone cellular setup guide and SIM removal and switching instructions provide model-relevant details. Samsung likewise advises inserting the eject pin straight, seating a supported nano-SIM correctly, and fully reinserting the tray. Its guidance says to dry a wet tray fully and not force the card or tray; menu names and layouts may vary by model and software. How to move your SIM card or service to a new phone
Moving a physical SIM
A physical SIM can usually be moved only if the new phone accepts that card and the carrier allows the line to be used on the device. If the SIM is the wrong size or incompatible, ask the carrier about a replacement. Some carriers use SIM-protection controls that prevent activation in a new device; Samsung advises customers to check with their carrier if this blocks the move. Moving a SIM moves cellular service, not contacts or other phone data.

Transferring an eSIM
eSIM setup is not automatically transferable in every case. Depending on carrier, model, software, and region, activation may use a carrier setup flow, a nearby-phone transfer, a QR code, a carrier app, or help from a carrier store. If a transfer fails, the carrier may need to activate the plan.
For iPhone, Apple lists carrier activation, supported nearby-iPhone transfer, a carrier QR code, a carrier app, or carrier-store activation as possible routes. Apple says that when an iPhone number transfer completes, the number stops working on the previous iPhone. For Pixel, Google says automatic eSIM transfer depends on the carrier; both phones need Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services, and a screen lock. If automatic detection fails, contact the carrier; Google notes that the existing device or eSIM may continue working if the transfer fails. Samsung’s eSIM availability and setup steps depend on the Galaxy model, region, and service provider; its Australian instructions include adding a plan or scanning a carrier QR code. Follow the instructions for your exact device and location: Apple, Google Pixel, and Samsung Australia.

Converting a physical SIM to eSIM
Conversion is a carrier- and device-specific process, not a universal phone setting. Google’s Pixel guidance specifies Pixel 8 or later, including Fold, and Wi-Fi for on-device conversion. After a successful conversion, the physical SIM stops working. Check your carrier’s activation steps and your model’s instructions before starting.
Why does my phone say “No SIM” or “SIM not detected”?
“No SIM” means the phone is not detecting a SIM in the way it expects; “No service” can also reflect an activation or network issue. Work through these checks in order, separating whether the phone can read the card from whether the carrier has activated the line.

- Confirm compatibility and activation. Check that the phone supports the physical SIM format or eSIM, and that the line is active and enabled. Ask the carrier whether an account restriction or SIM-protection feature is blocking the device.
- Restart the phone. Samsung identifies temporary software errors as one possible cause of SIM detection problems.
- Reseat and inspect a physical SIM. Remove it carefully, check for bending or damage, and reseat it so it lies flat. Wipe dirt with a soft dry or microfiber cloth. Samsung warns against touching the contacts with hands or metal objects and against forcing the card into place. If it is bent or damaged, Google advises asking the carrier for a replacement.
- Check SIM status where available. On Samsung, open Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status and check whether the carrier appears. Menu labels may vary.
- Test another compatible SIM, if available. Try a known-working active SIM in the phone, or test the suspect SIM in another compatible phone. Google recommends testing the SIM elsewhere to help distinguish a card issue from a phone issue.
- Contact the carrier about service or transfer issues. The carrier can check activation and account status, SIM-protection settings, replacement SIM eligibility, or a failed eSIM transfer.
- Consider device service if the phone remains the likely cause. If an active SIM works in another compatible phone but this phone cannot read a known-working SIM, manufacturer or repair support may be appropriate.
On a Samsung Galaxy, resetting network settings is a later option, not a harmless first check: Samsung says it removes saved mobile-network configuration and reconnects using defaults. Review that consequence and the model-specific steps in Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions before proceeding. Google’s related Pixel mobile connectivity guidance covers additional connectivity checks.

Do not guess. Apple warns: “Never try to guess a SIM PIN.” An incorrect guess can permanently lock the SIM, leaving calls and cellular data unavailable until you obtain a new SIM. Contact your carrier if you do not know the PIN; do not repeatedly enter possibilities. Apple’s iPhone cellular guide gives this warning.
