In Outlook, use Forward—not Reply or Reply All—to carry the original message’s attachments into a new email. A normal forward includes the attachments automatically, although you can remove them or add more before sending.
The exact attachment controls depend on whether you use Outlook on the web, New Outlook, Classic Outlook, or Outlook for Mac. The steps below cover each version, including what to do when an attachment is missing or is actually a OneDrive link.
Forward an email with its original attachments
This is the quickest method in every current Outlook version:
- Open or select the message that contains the attachments.
- Select Forward.
- Enter the recipients and add any comments.
- Check that the attachment names appear in the draft.
- Remove any unwanted attachment, add files if necessary, and select Send.
You do not need to download the original attachments first. Outlook normally includes every attachment that was included with the original message. This also applies when the original message contains several files.

Outlook on the web or Outlook.com
Forward the original attachments automatically
- Sign in to Outlook.com or open Outlook on the web through Microsoft 365.
- Select the message in your inbox or open it.
- Select Forward.
- Enter the recipient addresses.
- Confirm that the attachments appear above the message body.
- Select Send.
Replying does not copy the original attachments. If you selected Reply by mistake, close or discard that draft and start with Forward, or add the files manually.
Add another local file in web Outlook
- Open the forwarded draft.
- Select Attach, then Browse this computer.
- Select one or more files and choose Open.
To select multiple files, hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on Mac while selecting them. A file selected from your computer is attached as a copy, so each recipient receives an independent copy.
Add a OneDrive file
- In the forwarded draft, select Attach file, then OneDrive.
- Select the file and choose Next.
- Choose the sharing or link behavior offered by Outlook.
A OneDrive item is generally sent as a shared link, not as a separate file copy. If the recipient cannot open it, use More actions > Manage access to change permissions. A link is useful when everyone should work on the same cloud file; use a copy when recipients only need a snapshot of the file.
New Outlook for Windows
- Open or select the email you want to forward.
- Select Forward.
- Fill in the recipients and message text.
- Look for the original attachment chips or filenames in the draft.
- Select Send when the draft is ready.
If the original file is not in the forwarded draft, add it manually:

- Select Message > Attach File.
- Choose Browse This PC.
- Select the file and insert it.
New Outlook may also let you turn a local file into a OneDrive link. Select the attachment’s down arrow and choose Upload to OneDrive. After uploading, the attachment appears as a link. Its menu can provide options such as attaching it as a copy, editing permissions, changing to the full URL, or copying the URL.
If a forwarded OneDrive or SharePoint file appears in red with a warning icon, the recipients probably do not have permission to access it. Use the link menu to edit access or select Attach as copy, if that option is available.
Classic Outlook for Windows
- Open the message, or select it in the message list.
- Select Forward on the ribbon.
- Enter the recipients and any additional text.
- Verify that the original files are listed in the forwarded message.
- Select Send.
To add a file that was not carried into the draft:
- With the forwarded message open, select Message > Attach File in the Include group.
- Select a recent file, choose Browse This PC, or select another listed location.
- Choose the file and insert it into the message.
Attach another email in Classic Outlook
If you need to give the recipient the original email as an Outlook item—not merely quote its text—select the message in the message list and choose More Respond Actions > Forward as Attachment. Outlook creates a new message with the selected email attached.
To attach several emails, select the first message, hold Ctrl while selecting the others, and then select Forward on the main Outlook ribbon. Outlook adds the selected messages as attachments.

Outlook for Mac
Current Outlook for Mac
- Open the message and select Forward.
- Check that the original attachments are present.
- To add another item, select Attach File.
- Choose Browse this Mac, OneDrive, Insert link, or Recent Files.
- Select the file and choose Choose.
- Send the message.
To forward an entire folder, select it as an attachment. Outlook for Mac compresses the folder into a single .zip file and asks you to confirm by selecting Compress.
Legacy Outlook for Mac
- Open or select the message and choose Forward.
- In the forwarded draft, select Message > Attach File.
- Select the file and choose Choose.
For cloud sharing in Legacy Outlook for Mac, use Message > Insert Link > OneDrive.
Forward an email as an attachment
There are two different meanings of “forward with an attachment.” A standard forward places the original message’s files in the new message. Forward as Attachment instead places the entire original email inside the new message as an Outlook item.
Use the second method when a colleague needs to inspect the original headers, sender details, message formatting, or conversation context:

- In Outlook’s desktop message list, select the email.
- Select More Respond Actions > Forward as Attachment.
- Enter the recipients and add an explanation.
- Select Send.
The attached email may appear as an Outlook message item rather than a familiar PDF, Word document, or image. The recipient’s mail application may determine how easily that item can be opened.
Why the attachment is missing

Important checks before sending
- Check the attachment type: A cloud link and an independent file copy have different permission and editing behavior.
- Check access: A recipient may be able to see the message but lack permission for its OneDrive or SharePoint attachment.
- Check whether a copy is appropriate: If a cloud file is changed to Attach as copy, later edits to the emailed copy do not synchronize with the original cloud file.
- Check the file list: Outlook allows you to remove an automatically included attachment before sending.
- Do not rely only on the forgotten-attachment warning: In New Outlook and desktop Outlook, that reminder is triggered only when the message text is formatted in English (US), regardless of the Outlook interface language.
New Outlook currently does not support attaching calendar information to an email. Use calendar sharing or a scheduling-poll feature instead.

Do I have to download an attachment before forwarding it?
No. Downloading is unnecessary for a normal forward. Download a file only if you need to edit, replace, rename, or manually reattach it.
How do I forward multiple emails as attachments?
In desktop Outlook, select the first email, hold Ctrl while selecting additional messages, and choose Forward on the main ribbon. Outlook adds the selected emails as attachments.
Can I forward an attachment to someone who does not have OneDrive access?
Yes, if Outlook offers an Attach as copy option. Otherwise, change the sharing permissions through Manage access or download and attach an independent copy, subject to your organization’s policies.

The Bottom Line
For ordinary forwarding, select Forward and verify the attachment list before selecting Send. Use Attach File when you need to add a missing or replacement file, and use Forward as Attachment when the entire original email must be delivered as an Outlook item. Pay special attention to OneDrive and SharePoint links: they may require recipient permissions and are not automatically the same as sending a standalone file copy.
