To improve your website’s visibility in AI search results, make important pages crawlable and indexable, publish useful information that adds something beyond existing coverage, and measure citations and appearances in the reporting tools available to you. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says established Search fundamentals still apply—there is no special AI-only optimization, and eligibility does not guarantee that a page will appear.
How AI search visibility works
Google’s generative search experiences draw on its Search index and ranking and quality systems. Its guide describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out as ways relevant information can be retrieved and supporting pages surfaced. The practical implication is that a page must first be discoverable and eligible in ordinary Search; there is no separate shortcut that guarantees a citation.
For a page to be eligible as a supporting link in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, it must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Search. Google says these features have no additional technical requirements, and it does not guarantee that any page will be crawled, indexed, or served. Google’s AI features documentation explains the eligibility conditions.
How to improve your chances of being cited
1. Check crawling and index eligibility
- Confirm that the page loads successfully for visitors and is not blocked from crawling by robots.txt, your CDN, or hosting controls.
- Use Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to review the page’s indexing status and diagnose access or indexing issues.
- Check that the page can appear with a Search snippet, and link to it from relevant pages using crawlable internal links.
- Resolve errors and request recrawling where appropriate, then allow time for Google to process the change. A successful inspection does not force inclusion in Search or an AI result.
Google’s Search Essentials cover the broader technical and policy foundations.

2. Make the page genuinely useful and distinct
Start with the reader’s actual task. Provide accurate, specific information and a clear point of view, rather than rephrasing material that is already widely available. Original data, useful explanations, and firsthand experience can make a page more valuable when you genuinely have that experience; do not imply testing or expertise that did not happen.
Use relevant terms naturally in the title, main heading, and body so readers can quickly understand the subject. Google says there is no ideal page length and no need to rewrite content in a special “AI style.” Choose the format and depth that fit the question.

3. Keep the page clear and accessible
- Organize the page with descriptive headings and a clear hierarchy.
- Keep important information available as readable text, even when images or video support it.
- Use relevant internal links and ensure the main content works well on mobile.
- If you use structured data, make it accurate and consistent with content visible on the page.
These are sound practices for search discoverability and usability, not secret AI ranking factors. Google says special schema for generative AI search is not required.
4. Review AI-assisted content before publishing
AI tools can help with research or structure, but publishing many low-value pages generated at scale can violate Google’s scaled content abuse policy. Fact-check claims and metadata, assess whether each page adds meaningful value, and disclose how content was created when that context helps readers. See Google’s guidance on using generative AI content.

Do you need llms.txt or AI-specific SEO?
Not for Google Search visibility. Google’s current guide says it ignores llms.txt for this purpose; adding one neither helps nor harms Google Search rankings. That statement is specific to Google and should not be generalized to every AI service.
Google also says you do not need special AI-only wording, tiny content “chunks,” or special schema.org markup for its generative search features. Keep any structured data accurate and aligned with visible content for applicable Search features and broader SEO. Write for the audience and subject, not a supposed AI formatting trick.

Use the reporting tools to understand what they actually measure. Neither one can promise future visibility, and citation counts are not a ranking report.

|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Generative AI performance report | Generative AI impressions and pages, with country, device (for Search results), and date breakdowns, plus Search and Discover views. Google announced the report on June 3, 2026, and said rollout to websites worldwide was complete by August 31, 2026. | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends across supported AI experiences. Turn reporting into improvements
- Compare reporting periods and identify which pages are appearing or being cited.
- Review the page against the intent of the queries or topics shown in the available report.
- Improve gaps in accuracy, usefulness, clarity, or accessibility rather than adding keywords or formatting for its own sake.
- Check performance again after changes, treating reported activity as an indicator—not proof of ranking or guaranteed traffic.
Microsoft’s February 10, 2026 announcement, by product managers Krishna Madhavan, Meenaz Merchant, Fabrice Canel, and Saral Nigam, said: “For the first time, you can understand how often your content is cited in generative answers, with clear visibility into which URLs are referenced and how citation activity changes over time.” Its own caveat about what those metrics cannot establish is essential when interpreting the report.
