Make your application clear, complete and matched to a lender’s requirements: explain how much you need and what it will fund, show how the business can repay it, disclose relevant credit and existing debt, and provide the records the lender requests. No preparation step guarantees approval. The rules below use U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) 7(a) loans as a specific example; eligibility and underwriting differ by country, lender and loan type.
What lenders need to understand
A lender is assessing both whether the business qualifies for the loan program and whether the proposed borrowing is supportable. For an SBA 7(a) loan, the business must meet SBA eligibility conditions, be creditworthy and show a reasonable ability to repay. Those program conditions do not guarantee approval: a participating lender reviews the application and applies its underwriting requirements.
Make the application tell a consistent story: the amount requested fits the stated purpose, the business has a credible plan for using the funds, and its financial information explains how it will repay the debt. SBA guidance says lenders may consider cash flow, credit information, equity and collateral. Which factors matter, and how they are assessed, depends on the lender and transaction.

Specify the amount and use of funds
Work out how much the business needs and identify what each part will pay for. The SBA’s 7(a) program can support eligible purposes including working capital, certain debt refinancing, real estate, equipment, furniture and supplies, and changes in ownership. Confirm that your intended use is allowed under the program and acceptable to the lender before applying.

Show how repayment will work
Prepare current financial information and projections that make the repayment plan understandable. Explain how the funds are expected to affect the business and how its cash flow can support the debt payments. SBA guidance encourages applicants to understand their finances and prepare projections; it does not prescribe one projection format or a universal approval ratio.

Review credit and existing obligations
Know the business’s credit history and the relevant owners’ or guarantors’ credit information before the lender reviews them. Be ready to explain existing debt and other obligations accurately. SBA Form 1919 collects information about the applicant and owners, the loan request, existing indebtedness and certain government financing matters.
There is no single credit-score cutoff or collateral rule established by the SBA pages cited here for all SME lenders. Do not assume that a particular score, amount of revenue, time in business or collateral package guarantees approval. Ask the lender how it evaluates your specific application.

Gather the records the lender actually requires
Start with accurate information about the applicant, owners, requested loan, existing debt and relevant government financing history. Then ask each lender for its document checklist and format requirements. The SBA says application contents vary with loan size and the lender’s processing method, so a generic checklist cannot replace the lender’s instructions.
Depending on the application, the lender may request tax returns, financial statements, projections, a business plan, or information about collateral. These are examples to confirm with the lender, not a universal SBA document list. For startup funding, SBA guidance says most lenders expect a business plan; the SBA also provides a free business-plan guide.

Choose and compare lenders before applying
For SBA 7(a), borrowers apply through a participating lender. SBA Lender Match can help connect a business with potential lenders, but it is not a loan application and does not guarantee a match or an offer. If a lender expresses interest, you still discuss the request with it and submit its application.

Compare actual lender terms rather than choosing on a match alone. Ask about rates, fees, repayment terms and conditions, and whether the lender’s requirements fit the business’s situation. You can use Lender Match as one starting point or contact lenders directly.

Know which rules are specific to SBA 7(a)
The SBA’s 7(a) eligibility rules apply to that U.S. program, not to every small-business loan. In general, an eligible 7(a) borrower must be an operating, for-profit business located in the United States, meet SBA size requirements, and not fall into an excluded category. The program also requires that the business be unable to obtain desired credit on reasonable terms from specified government sources, be creditworthy and have a reasonable ability to repay. Check the SBA’s current eligibility guidance and consult the lender for your circumstances.
If you are outside the United States, or considering a non-SBA product, check the rules published by the relevant local government program and lender. Requirements can vary substantially by jurisdiction and product; the SBA example should not be treated as a universal SME-loan standard.
A practical application sequence
- Confirm the program and eligibility. Identify the country, loan type and intended use, then check the applicable official rules and lender requirements.
- Define the request. Write down the amount needed, what it will fund and why that amount supports the business.
- Build the repayment explanation. Assemble current financial information and projections that show how the business expects to repay the debt.
- Review credit and debt. Check relevant business and owner credit information, list existing obligations, and be prepared to answer questions about requested government financing history.
- Request the lender’s checklist. Confirm which forms and supporting records it needs, and follow its submission instructions.
- Compare terms and apply. Discuss rates, fees, repayment terms and conditions with potential lenders before choosing where to submit an application.
Preparation can make a request easier to assess, but the reviewed SBA pages do not publish a universal approval rate or quantify how much any one preparation step improves approval odds.
