Most audio gains on Netflix come from checking settings, not buying equipment. Work through four checks in order: whether the title and language offer a 5.1 track, whether your streaming quality allows it, whether your device output and cables pass it along, and whether stereo sounds better for your setup. A soundbar or receiver is an optional later step, and it only helps once the earlier checks pass.
Start with the title: is 5.1 available at all?
Surround audio is not offered for every title, episode, or language. Open the title’s page first. Netflix marks titles that support 5.1 with a 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus icon, and its audio quality page (Spanish-language version) notes that title pages show the relevant icons, that not all episodes or seasons necessarily carry those options, and that availability can vary by language. The icon is a useful first check, not a guarantee that every episode will have the same track.
Next, start playback and open the Audio & Subtitles menu from the player controls. Choose the 5.1 track if it is listed. If it is not, the title or language does not offer it on your account, regardless of your hardware.

What your setup needs for 5.1
Netflix’s 5.1 requirements list three conditions that must all be true:
- A 5.1-capable audio system, such as a receiver, surround system, or soundbar that accepts multichannel audio.
- A Netflix-capable device that supports 5.1.
- Streaming quality set to Medium, High, or Auto.
Computers are more restrictive. Netflix’s 5.1 troubleshooting page says 5.1 on a computer works only on Windows 10 or later, and only through Microsoft Edge or the Netflix app.

Fix a missing 5.1 option or stereo-only sound
Netflix’s 5.1 troubleshooting guidance is the most direct reference for this problem. Work through the steps in this order, because each one rules out a different cause:
- Confirm the title supports 5.1. Check for the 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus icon on the title page, then look for a 5.1 entry under Audio & Subtitles during playback.
- Check streaming quality. Make sure it is set to Medium, High, or Auto. A lower setting can prevent the multichannel track from being used.
- Check the device audio output. When your equipment supports 5.1, the output should be set to a 5.1-compatible option rather than stereo or Linear PCM. The exact menu name differs by device, so use your TV or streamer’s sound-output settings.
- Check the connection. Confirm that the speakers, receiver, or soundbar are connected over HDMI or optical as your equipment requires. If the connection looks correct but the surround option is still missing, try another cable, since a faulty cable can drop the signal to stereo.
- Test on a supported computer setup. If you are on a computer, confirm you are running Windows 10 or later in Microsoft Edge or the Netflix app.
Stereo is not a failure. If the 5.1 track sounds worse in your room, or your speakers are two-channel, choosing stereo is the correct setting.

Fix low volume or dialogue that is buried
Low volume and quiet voices behind music or effects are separate problems, and Netflix handles them differently. Start with the simplest check: the device volume. Netflix’s low-volume guidance begins there and then points to device-specific steps.
For quiet dialogue, Netflix’s dialogue guidance gives a specific sequence only for Apple TV 4 and Apple TV 4K:

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format > Change Format.
- Select Dolby Digital 5.1 and play the title again.
- If voices are still hard to hear, select Stereo instead.
On other devices, Netflix directs you to contact Netflix support rather than offering a general menu sequence. Surround is not automatically better for dialogue. A narrow stereo mix can make voices clearer in some rooms, which is why Netflix offers Stereo as the fallback. Judge the result by listening to a scene with dialogue, not by the channel count alone.

Quick reference: symptoms and first fixes
| Symptom | First check | If that does not help |
|---|---|---|
| No 5.1 option in Audio & Subtitles | Look for the 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus icon on the title page | Check whether the language or episode has a 5.1 track; availability varies |
| 5.1 track exists but you hear stereo | Set streaming quality to Medium, High, or Auto | Set the device output to a 5.1-compatible option and check the cable |
| Downloaded title has no surround | Downloads do not support 5.1 | Stream the title instead |
| Dialogue quiet on Apple TV 4 or 4K | Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format > Change Format, then Dolby Digital 5.1 | Select Stereo |
| Dialogue quiet on another device | Raise device volume | Contact Netflix support for device-specific steps |
When a soundbar or receiver is worth considering
Hardware is the last step, after settings and connections have been checked. Netflix’s troubleshooting covers sound bars, receivers, surround systems, and other external audio devices, and its 5.1 requirements call for a capable audio system. Those sources do not show that a new soundbar will solve a particular problem, and they do not identify a best model.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
If you are considering one, judge it against these points:
- Compatibility with your TV or streamer output. Confirm it accepts the audio format your device sends.
- Available connections. Check whether it offers the HDMI or optical input your setup uses.
- Your goal. Clearer dialogue, simple stereo playback, and surround immersion call for different products.
- Dialogue controls. Use the clarity or dialogue settings the device maker documents, since they vary by product.
A higher channel count is not a guaranteed improvement in every room. Test the setup you already own first, and buy only if the title, device, and connection checks all pass and the sound still does not meet your needs.
Netflix’s help pages are the reference for these steps, but menu names and availability can change over time, and on some devices the labels will differ from those shown here.
