A Wi-Fi extender can help with one weak room, but it cannot create a strong connection if it receives a weak signal from your router. First improve router placement; then choose an extender for a targeted dead zone, mesh for broader coverage, or powerline networking when obstacles make a wireless link difficult.

What can you use to improve Wi-Fi range?

There is no evidence-based “top five” ranking of range boosters here: the right fix depends on your home, router, and where coverage fails. These are the practical options to consider:

Option Best fit Key limitation
Router repositioning Weak coverage that may be caused by an enclosed, off-center, or obstructed router location Improvement depends on the home’s layout and what is causing the weak signal
Wi-Fi range extender One targeted weak room or area It must receive a usable signal from the router to rebroadcast
Mesh Wi-Fi system Coverage across multiple rooms or floors Results depend on home size, construction, layout, and node placement
Powerline networking A wireless connection struggles through obstacles or distance It carries the network over electrical wiring; the available electrical path affects whether it suits the home
Wired access point A stable connection is important and an Ethernet cable can reach the coverage area Requires an Ethernet run to the access point

TP-Link describes the general roles of extenders, mesh, and powerline networking in its Wi-Fi solution comparison. These are categories, not a guarantee that any particular device will fix a particular home.

What should you try before buying anything?

Move the router toward a central, elevated, open location if its cable and service equipment allow. Avoid hiding it in a cabinet or placing it beside large metal objects or appliances. Walls, distance, and other obstacles can weaken coverage. TP-Link’s general guidance says 2.4 GHz typically reaches farther with less bandwidth, while 5 GHz offers faster speeds over shorter distances; actual results vary by router and environment. See its router placement guidance.

TP-Link Deco X55 AX3000 WiFi 6 Mesh System, Deco X55(3-Pack)
  • Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
  • Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
  • Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

Where should you put a Wi-Fi extender?

A range extender receives the router’s Wi-Fi signal and rebroadcasts it. TP-Link says placement is the single biggest factor affecting performance. Start roughly halfway between the router and the weak area, but only where the router’s signal is still usable. Halfway is a starting point, not a guaranteed measurement.

  1. Put the extender between the router and the weak room, within usable router signal.
  2. Check the extender’s signal indicator or app, if available.
  3. If the router-to-extender connection is weak, move the extender closer to the router.
  4. Check coverage in the room and on the devices that matter to you.

TP-Link’s extender placement guide explains the placement factors and recommends access-point mode with an Ethernet cable when a wireless link to the extender is unstable. Its extender check guide covers basic verification.

  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.

When is mesh a better fit than one extender?

If several rooms or floors have weak coverage, compare a mesh system rather than assuming one extender can cover the whole home. Home size, construction, layout, and node placement all affect the result. Google calls mesh placement “an inexact science” and advises testing the connection after setup; see Google’s placement guidance.

Before adding a node to an existing mesh, verify compatibility. For example, Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in one mesh with older Nest Wifi or Google Wifi devices. Do not assume that mesh hardware from different generations or systems will work together.

When should you consider powerline or a wired access point?

If walls or distance make a reliable wireless link difficult, powerline adapters carry the network through electrical wiring and may be worth comparing. If you can run Ethernet to the coverage area, a wired access point avoids relying on a wireless backhaul. The suitable choice depends on whether your home has a usable electrical path or an Ethernet route.

How can you tell whether the fix worked?

Test in the actual rooms and at the devices where you need coverage. A connected indicator or successful internet access shows that a device is operating, but does not establish a particular speed gain. Check the connection where it matters rather than relying only on the extender’s status light.
