Improve retention by helping people complete a useful task quickly, making transactions and security understandable, and giving them a practical reason to return. Start by finding where users drop off, then test changes with defined user cohorts; no single design tactic guarantees a retention lift.
Make the app valuable before asking users to come back
Retention is more likely when an app repeatedly solves a problem users care about. Identify the core job—such as paying, transferring, tracking, or managing an asset—and make the useful outcome clear before adding secondary features. Remove steps that do not protect the user or materially improve that task. Ethereum.org’s Web3 interface guidance recommends shortening common actions and grouping related actions together: Web3 interface design guidance.
Token rewards can attract attention, but they are not a substitute for lasting utility. Onchain’s 2025 report argues that some apps reliant solely on speculative token incentives experienced user drop-offs as token values declined, and points instead to practical value and enjoyable experiences. Treat that as the report’s analysis, not a universal rule: incentives may help a product, but the underlying reason to use it should remain understandable without expecting a token payout.
Turn onboarding into a first successful task
Onboarding should teach only what users need at the moment they need it, while helping them accomplish a real task. A long tutorial before a user sees the product’s value can add friction; omitting essential information about custody, confirmations, or risk can create a different problem. Explain enough for a person to understand what they are doing and what they are authorizing.

Bitcoin Design’s usage lifecycle guide warns: “If the first use is frustrating, users are less likely to use your product again—or to recommend it.” Its suggested user questions are useful prompts for onboarding and product review: “Is this a convenient way to get done what I want to do?”, “Can I trust this product and its creators?”, “Can I get out if something goes wrong?”, and “What can I lose?” Bitcoin Design’s usage lifecycle guide.
There is limited experimental evidence that onboarding quality can affect first-time users’ perceived usability, but it does not prove a general retention effect. A 2021 cryptocurrency-wallet study by Fröhlich, Kobiella, Schmidt, and Alt used two separate samples of 16 people: one for interviews and one for user tests of two wallet prototypes. The authors suggest that well-designed onboarding can improve perceived usability. The small, relatively young and well-educated samples and the perceived-usability outcome mean the result should not be read as evidence that a specific onboarding recipe increases long-term retention. Make transaction state and network context obvious
Users should not have to guess whether a transaction is preparing, awaiting confirmation, complete, or failed. During a pending action, show what is happening, which network is active, what is waiting, and what the user can do next. If a flow has multiple stages, make those stages visible and explain wait times where possible. Ethereum.org’s guidance puts it plainly: “If there are multiple steps to a process, show each step.”
Clear terminology matters too. Use labels users can understand, make important information prominent, and explain network connections rather than hiding them behind unfamiliar technical language. These practices are design guidance intended to make Web3 interfaces easier to use; they are not, by themselves, a measured promise of higher retention. Ethereum.org’s Web3 interface design guidance.

Earn trust with clear security and recovery information
Explain the security model in plain language: who controls the assets, what the app can and cannot do, what a confirmation means, and what risks users face. Make relevant security features and audit information easy to find, while being explicit that an audit does not eliminate risk. Describe recovery and exit options so people can assess what happens if they lose access or something goes wrong.
These explanations are part of the product experience, not material to bury in legal text. Bitcoin Design’s lifecycle guidance highlights trust, the ability to get out if something goes wrong, and potential losses as user concerns. Ethereum.org likewise recommends surfacing security and possible risks. Bitcoin Design and Ethereum.org.

Build a repeat-use reason around practical value
Look for a recurring job, useful benefit, or satisfying experience that makes the app worth opening again. For a payments or loyalty product, a practical discount may be more compelling than a speculative reward; for another app, reliable transaction history or a clear portfolio task may matter more. The right repeat-use reason depends on what the product actually helps its audience do and whether the business can sustain the value it offers.
Onchain’s 2025 report says 25.91% of respondents in its global survey of 1,005 Web3 users regularly used crypto payment apps. It also reports retention rates as high as 70% in connection with practical restaurant discounts in blockchain loyalty programs, including the Blackbird example. These are report-level findings: the material does not establish the exact denominator or time window for the 70% figure, nor does it establish that the discounts caused that outcome. They should not be treated as universal benchmarks for crypto apps. Onchain’s 2025 Web3 loyalty report.

Find the drop-off, learn why, and test changes by cohort
Start with the user journey, from first exposure through first successful task and later repeat use. Define the events that represent meaningful progress for your product; then look for the points where people stop. Segment cohorts where it helps explain differences—for example, by acquisition source or exposure to an incentive—and compare behavior over a clearly defined time window.
Analytics can show where a journey loses users, but they rarely explain motivation on their own. Pair event and cohort analysis with interviews or usability observation to learn whether the cause is confusing language, excessive steps, a failed transaction, unclear risk, or a lack of recurring value. Bitcoin Design advises teams to understand lifecycle drop-off, while Onchain describes using user and founder surveys, analytics, case studies, and comparative research in its report. Bitcoin Design’s usage lifecycle guide; Onchain’s report methodology and findings.
For each proposed change, specify the user problem it is intended to solve, the cohort to evaluate, and the measurement window before comparing results. Assess whether it improves the real task, reduces time or effort to first success, clarifies transaction state, strengthens risk and recovery communication, supports repeat use, and depends on speculative payouts. Use your own product’s baseline rather than adopting a retention target from a different app or a report with different methods.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Ethereum.org’s page is an official design resource, updated December 25, 2024; its interface heuristics are guidance, not a retention trial. Bitcoin Design provides lifecycle guidance without a publication date on the accessed page. The 2021 wallet onboarding study is peer-reviewed but small, and perceived usability is not the same outcome as long-term retention. Onchain’s 2025 report combines several evidence types and notes that the market changes quickly, so its figures need attribution and should not be generalized beyond what the report establishes.
