To improve how Wii games look on a modern TV, connect the console with a Wii Component Video Cable and enable 480p: open Settings → Screen → TV Resolution, select EDTV or HDTV (480p), and confirm. The Wii’s documented progressive output is 480p—not 720p or 1080p—and games without progressive-scan support still display in 480i.

What improves—and what 480p does not do

Progressive 480p can make compatible Wii games look clearer than interlaced 480i, but the result depends on the game and the display. Nintendo cautions that “Not all games support progressive scan mode.” Games that do not support 480p display in 480i, even when the console is set to 480p. See Nintendo’s TV resolution instructions and the Wii Operations Manual: Channels and Settings.

Setting the Wii to EDTV or HDTV does not make it output HD resolutions such as 720p or 1080p. Nintendo documents 480p as the Wii’s progressive mode; it does not provide a quantified image-quality gain or establish that one converter produces a sharper picture than another.

Get 480p with a component cable

Nintendo identifies a Wii Component Video Cable as the requirement for enabling the console’s 480p setting. Connect it to the Wii’s Digital AV Out port and to the matching component inputs on the TV, following the labels on the cable and television. Nintendo’s component connection instructions show the hookup.

GANA Wii to HDMI Converter, 1080P Wii HDMI Adapter with 3.5mm Audio Jack
  • STABLE WII TO HDMI CONVERSION: Convert your Wii or Wii U audio and video signal to HDMI for modern HDTVs, monitors and projectors. Designed for stable signal transmission and synchronized sound and picture, it works with 720p and 1080p HDMI displays while preserving the console’s original image quality.
  • SIMPLE PLUG-AND-PLAY SETUP: No drivers, software, settings or external power required. Connect the adapter to your console, attach an HDMI cable, select the correct HDMI input on your display and start playing. For the most reliable connection, plug the adapter directly into the TV, monitor or projector rather than an HDMI switch or splitter.
  • HDMI AUDIO PLUS 3.5MM AUDIO JACK: Audio is transmitted through the HDMI connection, while the built-in 3.5mm audio output lets you connect headphones, a headset or external speakers. Enjoy private late-night gaming or send the sound directly to your preferred audio device.
  • SUPPORTS STANDARD WII DISPLAY MODES: Compatible with NTSC 480i, 480p and PAL 576i display modes. Some newer TVs and monitors may not accept certain 240p or 480i game signals through HDMI; if no picture appears, set the Wii display resolution to 480p when the game and console support it.
  • COMPACT DESIGN & CLEAR COMPATIBILITY: Measuring approximately 6 × 3 × 1.9 cm, the compact adapter connects neatly behind the console without taking up desk space or adding tangled cables. Compatible with Wii and Wii U consoles using the Wii AV output connection; not compatible with Wii Mini. If you experience no picture, no sound or abnormal display lines, contact customer support for troubleshooting or replacement assistance.
  1. Connect the Wii Component Video Cable to the console’s Digital AV Out port and the TV’s matching component inputs.
  2. On the Wii, open Settings → Screen → TV Resolution.
  3. Select EDTV or HDTV (480p) and confirm.
  4. Set the TV to the input used for the Wii, then check its picture settings. Avoid zoom modes that crop or distort the image; refer to the television’s manual for settings specific to that connection.

If 480p is missing from the Wii’s resolution choices, check that the component cable is connected. Nintendo says the option is unavailable without it.

If your modern TV has no component inputs

A Wii-compatible HDMI adapter or video scaler may provide a way to connect the console to a TV that has HDMI but no component inputs. These are connection solutions, not guaranteed picture-quality upgrades. Before buying or using one, verify that the specific device supports the Wii and the signal mode you intend to use. Also check whether it only converts the connection or scales the image; capabilities vary by device.

Why the Wii may still look blurry

  • The game may be running in 480i. Check whether that title supports progressive scan; games without 480p support remain interlaced.
  • The TV may be on the wrong input. Select the input connected to the Wii.
  • The TV may be changing the picture. Check for zoom or other connection-specific picture modes that crop or distort the image.
  • The conversion device may not support the needed signal. Confirm compatibility and 480p support for the exact adapter or scaler rather than assuming all HDMI devices behave alike.
