Reliable speech-to-text starts with the audio signal, not a last-minute software switch. Place a consistent, close microphone near the talker, prevent clipping and unwanted automatic gain changes, preserve a lossless original, and test raw audio against any processed version. Then select the correct language and model, add phrase hints for names and specialist vocabulary, separate speakers onto channels when possible, and measure word error rate (WER) separately for noise, accents, overlap and microphone conditions.
The accuracy problem has three different causes
Speech recognizers fail for different reasons that can look identical in a transcript. A distant microphone lowers the target voice relative to room noise. A model can hear the signal clearly but mismatch a speaker’s language, dialect or vocabulary. Two people speaking at once create an attribution problem as well as a word-recognition problem. Treating all three as a generic “poor accuracy” issue leads to ineffective fixes.
- Signal problems: distance, reverberation, clipping, unstable gain, lossy encoding and background noise obscure the speech before recognition begins.
- Model mismatch: the selected language, locale, acoustic model or vocabulary does not represent the speaker or task.
- Multi-speaker interference: overlapping voices are mixed together, so the system may omit words, merge turns or assign correct words to the wrong person.
Improve them in that order. Better capture often produces a larger and more repeatable gain than aggressive post-processing.
1. Capture the cleanest signal you can
Place the microphone close and consistently
Near-field capture increases the talker’s level relative to background sound. Google Cloud’s guidance is explicit: “For best results: Position the microphone as close as possible to the person that is speaking, particularly when background noise is present.” A close-talking or directional USB headset microphone is therefore a defensible starting point for a noisy room.

Keep the microphone at a repeatable distance and angle. A setup that moves from a few centimetres from the mouth to across a desk during the same project changes the acoustic conditions and makes both tuning and evaluation less meaningful. If several people are recorded, give each person the same type of close microphone where practical rather than relying on one room microphone.
Prevent clipping and unstable gain
Clipping permanently distorts peaks; lowering the volume later cannot restore the lost waveform. Monitor levels during setup and leave headroom for loud syllables, laughter and sudden speech. Automatic gain control (AGC) can raise room noise during pauses or pump the level when a speaker moves. Disable AGC when the recognition service or recording chain recommends doing so, and keep the gain setting fixed during a test.
Record separate channels for separate speakers
Separate channels are the most useful hardware decision for overlapping speech. Record each person to an isolated channel whenever the equipment allows it. You can then transcribe channels independently and retain speaker identity without asking a diarization system to untangle a mixture. Keep channel assignments documented so the resulting text can be attributed correctly.
Preserve the original recording
Store an untouched master before enhancement, resampling or format conversion. It gives you a recovery path when a processed version performs worse and lets you run controlled comparisons. Keep the sample rate, encoding, channel count and language or model setting alongside each file; a transcript without those conditions is difficult to reproduce.
2. Choose encoding and preprocessing deliberately
Prefer lossless audio when supported
FLAC or LINEAR16 preserve information that lossy codecs may discard. Use the format accepted by your recognizer and verify that the file’s sample rate, encoding and number of channels match the request. A configuration mismatch can cause rejection or an unexpected resampling path, so check the service response and the actual file metadata rather than relying on a filename extension.

Test denoising instead of assuming it helps
Noise reduction can make a recording sound more pleasant to a person while removing speech cues that a recognizer relies on. Google Cloud states: “However, applying noise-reduction signal processing to the audio before sending it to the service typically reduces recognition accuracy.” Run the raw recording and the processed recording through the same model, using identical settings, and keep whichever wins on your target test set.
Dereverberation, beamforming and source separation can be useful, but treat each as an experiment with a defined input, output and evaluation condition. Do not stack several processors and attribute an improvement to one of them. Preserve the raw path so a failed enhancement does not become irreversible.

3. Reduce background noise at its source
Fix the room before fixing the model
Move the microphone closer, choose a quieter location and control predictable sources such as HVAC, fans, keyboard impacts and nearby conversations. Physical changes improve the signal for every recognizer and reduce the amount of domain-specific training data required. In a call centre, meeting room or vehicle, document the recurring noise types rather than labelling everything simply “noise.”
Match training and adaptation data to real noise
If you control the model, include representative mixtures of speech and the noises found in operation. Microsoft’s review of noise-robust speech recognition describes three broad families: feature compensation, model adaptation and robust training. None dominates in every environment. A method that works for stationary HVAC noise may not work for keyboard bursts, music or another talker.
Use recordings from the actual microphones and rooms, with consent and appropriate privacy controls. Synthetic mixtures can expand coverage, but acceptance tests should include real recordings because reverberation, microphone frequency response and intermittent events are hard to reproduce perfectly.

4. Handle accents, dialects and non-native speech as a coverage issue
Set the intended language and locale
Select the language, regional variant or locale that matches the speaker and task. Do not use a broad language label when the service offers a more appropriate locale. Language selection affects pronunciation expectations, vocabulary and formatting rules, so it should be part of the recorded test condition.

Supply phrase hints or equivalent vocabulary controls for proper names, product terms, acronyms and domain-specific words. Hints are not a replacement for an appropriate language model: they steer likely terms when the acoustic evidence is ambiguous. Maintain the hint list as a versioned project asset and test whether it improves the target vocabulary without increasing unrelated substitutions.
Adapt with representative, consented data
Fine-tuning or other adaptation can help when the available model systematically misses a dialect, accent or speaking style. Use data from the people and conditions you intend to support, obtain consent, and keep demographic and dialect labels protected and access-controlled. Report results by accent group rather than publishing only one blended score.
A 2024 inclusive-ASR study found disparities associated with gender, age, regional accents and non-native accents. It also found that pronunciation differences explained only part of the bias. The implication is practical: mitigation is language- and architecture-specific. Changing pronunciation dictionaries alone will not reliably remove every disparity.
5. Transcribe overlapping speakers
Use one channel per speaker whenever possible
Independent channels turn a hard source-separation problem into several ordinary recognition problems. Transcribe each channel separately, then merge the text using timestamps if a conversation view is needed. This approach also makes it easier to audit omissions and calculate error by speaker.

Use diarization when the source is mixed
For a single mixed recording, speaker diarization identifies who spoke when, while source-separation or target-speaker methods attempt to isolate voices. Expect residual attribution errors, especially when speakers have similar voices, alternate rapidly or speak simultaneously. A system can contain the correct words yet assign them to the wrong person.
Score words and attribution separately
Report ordinary WER for the recognized words and a speaker-attributed metric for whether each word is assigned to the correct speaker. For overlapping intervals, document how much simultaneous speech was present and whether the scoring protocol treats insertions from another speaker as recognition errors, attribution errors or both. Without that definition, two systems’ overlap scores are not comparable.
6. Build an evaluation matrix instead of trusting one score
Define WER and its limits
WER counts substitutions, deletions and insertions against a human reference, divided by the number of reference words. It is useful for comparing the same task under different conditions, but an overall average can conceal severe failures for a particular accent or room. A customer-support deployment may care more about names and numbers than about a small change in function words, so track task-critical terms separately as well.
Cross the conditions that matter
Create a matrix that varies the microphone, noise type and level, accent or dialect, overlap ratio and speaking style. Keep a clean reference set for regression testing and an operational set that reflects production. Record sample counts for every cell; a percentage from a handful of utterances should not outweigh a larger, representative group.
- Microphone type and placement
- Noise source and level or signal-to-noise condition
- Language, locale, accent or dialect, including non-native speech where relevant
- Overlap amount and turn-taking pattern
- Speaking rate, loudness and spontaneity
- Model, vocabulary hints and preprocessing path
Report uncertainty and demographics responsibly
Include confidence intervals when sample sizes permit and publish the number of speakers and utterances behind each result. The federal performance assessment guidance recommends documenting speaker demographics and dialect, and separating low-noise benchmark tests from operational-noise tests. Demographic information should be collected for measurement, protected as sensitive data and never used to expose individual speakers.

What published results actually show
Historical and task-specific results demonstrate that targeted changes can matter, but they do not establish a universal best recognizer.
| Study or condition | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Research, 1999 | 13% WER reduction from cepstrum length normalization on an independent fast-speech corpus | A feature-normalization gain on that corpus, not a guarantee for current models or microphones |
| Microsoft Research, 1999 | 23% WER reduction when normalization was combined with MLLR | A combined adaptation result under the study’s evaluation conditions |
| Zuluaga-Gomez et al., ISCA/Interspeech 2020 | 7.75% average WER across four air-traffic databases | An air-traffic benchmark average; the task and databases define the result |
| Zuluaga-Gomez et al., ISCA/Interspeech 2020 | 35% relative WER improvement from a TDNNF system with byte-pair encoding on one test set | A relative improvement on that test set, not an across-the-board percentage |
| Frontiers study, 2023 | 13.9% to 26.4% WER for the tested system, from studio SSBE speech to Welsh-English speech with speech-shaped noise | A condition-specific range showing how accent and noise can change results; it is not a universal ranking |
These figures support measuring the intervention that matches the failure. Feature normalization, adaptation or vocabulary changes may help one mismatch while doing little for another. Reproduce the relevant condition before treating a published percentage as a deployment expectation.
A repeatable improvement workflow
- Collect a controlled sample. Record the same speakers with the intended microphone placement, including quiet, noisy and overlapping examples. Keep the original files and a human reference transcript.
- Verify the input. Check clipping, AGC behaviour, sample rate, encoding, channel count and the selected language or model. Confirm that separate channels really contain the intended speakers.
- Run a raw baseline. Transcribe the unprocessed, lossless path and calculate WER by condition. Mark names, numbers and other business-critical terms separately.
- Change one capture variable. Move the microphone closer, alter its direction or reduce a room noise source. Repeat the same evaluation before adding software processing.
- Compare preprocessing paths. Test raw audio against denoised, dereverberated or separated versions under identical recognizer settings. Retain a processing step only when it improves the target conditions without unacceptable regressions.
- Apply model controls. Select the correct locale, add phrase hints and, where justified, adapt with representative consented data. Keep a held-out set that was not used for adaptation.
- Handle overlap explicitly. Use channel-wise transcription for isolated channels. For mixed audio, add diarization or separation and score both words and speaker attribution.
- Repeat the matrix. Measure every change across microphones, noise, accent and overlap cells. Record sample counts and confidence intervals where possible.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Observed symptom | Likely cause | First diagnostic action |
|---|---|---|
| Words are missing only when the room is loud | Low target-to-noise ratio or distant microphone | Move the microphone closer and compare with a fixed-gain recording before denoising |
| Accuracy changes when the speaker moves | AGC, inconsistent distance or directional-pattern changes | Disable AGC if supported and hold placement constant |
| Names are consistently replaced by common words | Vocabulary or language-model mismatch | Confirm locale and add phrase hints, then test on held-out names |
| One speaker’s words appear under another speaker’s label | Diarization or source-separation attribution error | Score speaker attribution separately and use isolated channels if available |
| Denoised audio sounds better but WER rises | Processing removed speech cues | Use the preserved raw file and make denoising a controlled, optional branch |
| A good aggregate score hides complaints from one group | Accent, dialect, demographic or microphone disparity | Break the test matrix down by speaker group and operating condition |
Requirements, trade-offs and privacy
The minimum practical setup is a consistent close or directional microphone, a recording path that avoids clipping, and a recognizer configured for the intended language and channels. Separate-channel recording requires compatible hardware and increases file-management work. Adaptation requires representative, consented data, evaluation infrastructure and a way to protect speaker information.

Cloud recognition may offer model breadth and managed scaling, while local deployment can reduce data movement and latency but requires suitable compute and maintenance. Compare systems on WER by accent and noise, overlap and attribution error, language and vocabulary coverage, latency, compute, microphone and channel requirements, privacy and deployment constraints. No single score captures those trade-offs.
Bottom line for production teams
Fix the acoustic signal first: close, stable microphones and intact recordings usually provide the most dependable improvement. Do not presume that generic denoising helps; prove it against raw audio. Select the correct locale, add vocabulary hints and adapt only with representative data. For overlapping talk, separate channels whenever possible and evaluate speaker attribution as its own problem. Finally, publish WER by noise, accent, microphone and overlap condition so an average cannot hide who is being left behind.
