When a caller is hard to hear, or they tell you they can’t hear you, the cause is usually one of four things: the call volume is low, something is covering a microphone or the earpiece, call audio is going to the wrong output, or the network connection is weak. Work through the quick checks first, then follow the branch that matches your symptom. No single setting will improve every call, and menu names differ between Android makers, software versions and carriers. The Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel steps below are examples, not universal instructions.

Start with these quick checks

  1. Raise the call volume during the call. Press the volume-up key while the call is active. Android keeps call volume separate from media volume, so changing music or video volume outside a call may not change how loud the earpiece is. Google’s guidance on changing volume, sound and vibrate settings explains the difference.
  2. Check the phone’s openings. Remove the case and any screen protector for a test call, then look at the microphone and earpiece openings for dust, lint or a protector edge that covers them.
  3. Check the audio route. On the in-call screen, look at the audio selector and confirm whether the call is on the handset, speaker, wired headset or a Bluetooth device.
  4. Make a test call from a different spot. Call a second contact, or a number you control, from another room or outdoors. If the problem disappears, the network or environment is the likely cause.

Identify which side sounds wrong

Before changing settings, establish which direction fails. Ask the other person whether they hear you clearly, and listen for whether the caller’s voice is faint, distorted or cutting out. The table below maps each symptom to the checks most likely to help.

What you notice Most likely area First check
The caller sounds quiet or muffled Call volume, earpiece obstruction, weak signal Raise call volume mid-call, then check the earpiece opening
The caller sounds distorted or crackly Earpiece debris, poor network, Bluetooth link Test in another location, then test with the handset alone
The other person says they cannot hear you Microphone covered, wrong audio route, accessory microphone in use Remove case and protector, hold the phone correctly, then test each route
The problem only happens with Bluetooth Phone audio setting or active output Confirm the device is the selected output and that Phone audio is on
The problem only happens in one place Network conditions or the environment Compare a second location and, where supported, Wi-Fi Calling

Incoming voice is too quiet or distorted

Raise the call volume correctly

Use the volume-up key while the call is connected. If you adjust volume before the call starts, the level may apply to ringtones or media instead. Raising call volume is the fastest fix for a quiet caller, but if the voice still sounds distorted at high volume, the cause is more likely the earpiece, the network or the audio route.

Clear the earpiece and check for a blocked receiver

Samsung’s guidance on low or no sound during calls says to check whether a case or screen protector is blocking the receiver. Look at the earpiece grille closely in good light. Do not push objects into it. If debris is visible and you can remove it safely, a soft, dry brush is the safest option.

Test the handset, speaker and headset one at a time

Switch between the handset, speaker and any wired or Bluetooth headset during the same call. If the voice is clear on one route and distorted on another, the problem is tied to that route rather than the network. Note which route was clear so you can use it while you investigate further.

The other person cannot hear you

Hold the phone so the microphone is near your mouth

Microphone position is one of the most common causes of a faint outgoing voice. Google’s Pixel Phone Help says: “For better call quality, hold your phone so the bottom microphone stays near your mouth.” (Google Pixel Phone Help, Turn on Clear Calling.) On most phones the bottom edge houses the main microphone, but check your model’s layout because some devices place secondary microphones elsewhere.

Remove obstructions without damaging the phone

Check that fingers, a case lip or a screen protector edge are not covering the microphone openings. Samsung’s microphone troubleshooting specifically warns against using compressed air to dry or clean a device. Do not poke into microphone ports with pins or metal tools, because that can push debris further in or damage the microphone.

Record a short test clip

If the other person still cannot hear you after you have cleared obstructions, Samsung suggests recording a short clip to see whether your voice sounds clear on the phone itself. Samsung’s microphone troubleshooting page describes this approach.

  2. Open your phone’s built-in voice recorder app and record about 10 seconds while speaking at normal distance.
  3. Play the clip back. If your voice is muffled, faint or missing on the recording, the microphone or its opening is likely at fault.
  4. Repeat the test after cleaning the openings and removing any protector. If the recording is still poor, contact the manufacturer or carrier.

The problem appears only with a Bluetooth device

Bluetooth can change where call audio goes, which is a common reason calls seem to come from the wrong place or the caller cannot hear you through the accessory.

  • Check the active audio output. During the call, confirm the connected Bluetooth device is the selected route. If it is not, choose it from the in-call audio selector.
  • Enable Phone audio for the accessory. Google’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance says that when calls cannot be made or received through a connected device, you should check its Phone audio setting. The Media audio setting is a separate control and does not decide where calls go.
  • Re-pair the device if it still fails. Remove the Bluetooth pairing and pair again, then place a test call.
  • Test without Bluetooth. Disable Bluetooth briefly and make a call on the handset. If the handset call is clear, the accessory or its link is the likely source.

The problem appears only in certain locations

Weak or inconsistent network conditions can affect call quality, and a location problem often means the signal, not the phone, is the cause. Move to a different spot, such as a window or an open area, and repeat the test call. Samsung says a weak Wi-Fi connection may affect call quality when calls use Wi-Fi.

Compare cellular and Wi-Fi Calling

On a compatible phone and carrier, Wi-Fi Calling routes calls over Wi-Fi. Google’s guidance on making calls over Wi-Fi says availability depends on your carrier, charges may apply, and the phone may turn the feature off if it detects Wi-Fi Calling problems. If you test both, compare calls at the same location and at the same time of day so the results are meaningful. Wi-Fi Calling is not guaranteed to improve quality, so treat it as one option rather than a fix.

Pixel-specific option: Clear Calling

Clear Calling is a Pixel feature in the Pixel Phone app on Pixel 7 and later. Google says it filters background noise during calls and that its availability depends on call bandwidth. The processing happens on the Pixel device. It is not a general Android toggle, and Google’s documentation does not extend it to other Android phones or third-party calling apps. If you use a Pixel 7 or later, you can turn it on from the Pixel Phone app’s settings, but it may not appear in every call.

Hands-free options

If the phone’s microphone position is inconvenient or you need both hands free, Google documents making and managing phone calls with Pixel Buds. Earbuds can make calls easier, but they do not fix weak reception, a blocked phone microphone or poor audio on every Android model. Confirm compatibility with your phone before buying.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek help

  • The problem persists across several locations after you removed cases, protectors and accessories.
  • Your test clip is still faint or distorted after cleaning the openings.
  • The problem happens on every accessory and every network, which suggests a hardware fault.

In these cases, contact the phone’s manufacturer for hardware checks and your carrier for network or Wi-Fi Calling issues. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance on a caller who cannot hear you on a Samsung Galaxy phone and its guide to low or no sound during calls cover the same checks in more detail for Galaxy models.
