Start with the streaming site’s own quality setting and the channel’s available picture quality. Select Auto or Automatic if offered. A faster connection, a TV setting, or an upscaler cannot restore detail the channel or service does not provide. If the picture is still poor, identify whether it is soft or pixelated, buffering, or stuttering, then test one change at a time.
1. Check the player setting and the channel’s source
Open the player settings and note which quality options are actually available. If there is an Auto or Automatic option, try it first: it lets the service choose from the definitions it offers in response to the connection. Free TV’s official guidance recommends Automatic for this reason, but its menu and available options do not describe every service; other players may use different labels or offer no manual quality control at all. A quality menu can select only the resolutions or feeds the provider supplies. If one channel looks soft while other channels or streaming services look sharp, the channel’s source feed or a service-side issue is a more likely place to start than your home network. If all services look poor, continue with the connection and device checks below.
2. Identify the kind of picture problem
- Soft, blurry, or pixelated picture: Check the player’s selected quality, the channel’s source, and whether your device and display support the target resolution.
- Buffering or quality that drops and rises: Check connection speed and stability on the TV or streaming device, then reduce competing network use.
- Stutter, judder, or motion blur: Check the TV’s motion-processing settings; they can affect how movement looks even when the stream resolution is adequate.
Make one change, then replay the same channel or scene before changing something else. That makes it easier to tell whether the adjustment helped.

3. Test the connection where you watch
Use the service’s connection test if it provides one, or run a reputable speed test on the TV or streaming device experiencing the problem. A phone tested elsewhere in the home may have a different Wi-Fi signal. DAZN notes that a speed-test result applies to the device on which the test was run. Speed is only part of the picture: a connection can test fast and still be unstable during a live stream.
These are examples of individual providers’ recommendations, not universal minimums or guarantees for free live-TV sites. They refer to different services, content, and devices; do not average them or assume another service will deliver a particular quality at the same speed.

4. Improve Wi-Fi and reduce network contention
Try the no-cost changes before buying equipment:
- Pause large downloads and reduce the number of devices actively using the network. Peacock lists simultaneous use and large downloads as possible contributors to buffering. Peacock buffering help.
- Move the router and TV or streaming device closer together; if practical, test them in the same room.
- Put the router in an open position off the floor, away from appliances and other wireless devices, and remove obstacles between it and the viewing device. DAZN also advises taking the router or modem out of an enclosed cupboard. Netflix Wi-Fi troubleshooting; DAZN streaming-problems help.
- Restart the streaming device. If the problem persists, restart the modem or router according to its instructions. Netflix Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
If the TV or streaming device and router both support Ethernet, try a cable as a way to test whether Wi-Fi instability is the cause. DAZN recommends a direct Ethernet connection as a troubleshooting option. A wired connection cannot raise the resolution of a low-quality source feed. DAZN streaming-problems help.

5. Check the device, output resolution, and HDMI path
For a consistently soft or capped image, check the full path: streaming service, TV or streaming box, receiver if present, HDMI cable, and selected HDMI port. Every link must support the resolution or HDR format you want. Netflix notes that device firmware and resolution settings matter, and that the cable and port can limit 4K or HDR. Set the streaming device’s output resolution to the desired supported level, but do not mistake an output setting for added source detail. A device can upscale a lower-resolution picture to fit the screen, but that does not turn the original feed into true HD or 4K. Install available app and device software updates as well.
6. Adjust motion settings only for motion problems
If the image stutters, judders, or has excessive motion blur, try turning off the TV’s motion interpolation or motion-smoothing feature and compare the result. Setting names vary; DAZN gives Tru Motion, MotionFlow, and Auto Motion Plus as examples. This is a targeted test for motion artifacts, not a general fix for a low-resolution or pixelated picture. 7. Check app, browser, and service-specific issues
If only one app or website has trouble while other services play normally, check that provider’s help page and service status before changing home equipment. For browser playback, use a supported, up-to-date browser. Clearing browser cache or app data is worth trying when the problem suggests stale or corrupted app/browser state, rather than as a routine picture-quality upgrade.

If several devices on the home network are affected, check for an internet-provider outage after trying the connection checks. When contacting your ISP, note whether one device or several are affected and whether the viewing device uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet; Netflix recommends sharing those details.
