For better gaming performance on an MSI Katana or Crosshair, first connect the correct original MSI power adapter, set Windows to Best performance, and select MSI Center’s Extreme Performance scenario if your model offers it. Then check that the game uses the discrete GPU, make sure the laptop can ventilate, and adjust demanding game settings. Menus and GPU-switching options vary across models, so confirm your full model name before following model-specific steps.
Start with power and performance modes
- Connect the original power adapter. MSI says its laptops achieve their best performance on AC power. Check the adapter requirement for your exact Katana or Crosshair model rather than substituting an arbitrary charger. MSI’s low-FPS guidance makes this a baseline recommendation, not a promise of a particular FPS gain.
- Set Windows power mode. Open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose Best performance under Power mode. Windows labels can differ by version.
- Choose a performance scenario in MSI Center. Open Features > User Scenario and select Extreme Performance if available. MSI describes this scenario for demanding gaming; the exact features and labels depend on the laptop and MSI Center version. MSI Center overview
To see whether a change helped, compare the same game scene at the same resolution and graphics settings. MSI does not publish a universal FPS increase for these changes.
Make sure the game uses the discrete GPU
On laptops with integrated and discrete graphics, Windows may let you assign a game to the high-performance GPU. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, choose Options, set it to High performance, and save. Windows’ label identifies the high-performance GPU; check that it is the discrete GPU.
Some Katana and Crosshair models also offer GPU modes in MSI Center. MSI says available modes depend on the model. On supported systems, MSHybrid switches between integrated and discrete graphics according to workload, while Discrete uses the NVIDIA GPU exclusively. MSI characterizes Discrete as the highest and most consistent option for graphics-intensive work; changing modes requires a restart. Do not assume your laptop has a MUX switch or a Discrete option. Check temperatures, vents, and fan controls
Use the laptop on a firm surface that does not block its vents, and check that the openings are clear. Dust and hair can accumulate around fans and vents. If performance drops after a longer session, heat may be a factor: MSI says high CPU or GPU temperatures can cause the system to reduce power and operating frequencies, which can lower FPS or contribute to stuttering. For supported models, MSI Center’s User Scenario settings may include Cooler Boost or fan controls. MSI’s troubleshooting sequence includes Extreme Performance and Cooler Boost, but names, availability, and custom fan-curve support vary by model. Faster fan operation increases noise. Update drivers and system software carefully
If low FPS or stuttering began after a change, or you see graphics artifacts or a display-detection problem, check Windows, BIOS, and graphics-driver updates for your exact model. Start with its MSI support page; do not install a BIOS or driver package intended for a different Katana or Crosshair.

If the laptop is in Integrated Graphics mode and NVIDIA is not detected, MSI says to switch to MSHybrid before installing the NVIDIA driver. Reduce settings that tax the GPU
If the game still runs below your target frame rate, try lowering resolution or reducing demanding options such as shadows, global illumination, reflections, and ray tracing. Change one or two settings at a time and compare the same scene so you can identify which adjustment matters. The best balance depends on the game and the laptop’s hardware; MSI’s guidance does not establish universal settings or benchmark results. MSI low-FPS troubleshooting
An SSD usually improves game loading compared with an HDD. MSI notes that it may also increase FPS in some AAA games that require significant loading of high-quality graphics, but that is not a guaranteed or general frame-rate upgrade.

Tell network lag apart from low FPS
If the frame rate is steady but other players or actions respond late, investigate the network rather than treating it as a graphics-performance problem. MSI lists poor network conditions and ping spikes as causes of high latency. By contrast, low FPS or stuttering points you back toward GPU selection, power mode, heat, drivers, or in-game settings. When to contact MSI support
If these checks do not resolve the problem, look up the full model name on MSI’s support site or contact MSI. Use model-specific instructions before changing BIOS settings or attempting overclocking. MSI says overclocking is available only for certain CPU and GPU combinations, so it is not a universal first step. MSI Center overview
