Start with the audio controls already on your phone: adjust left-right balance if one side sounds weaker, try headphone accommodations for soft speech, and use a dialogue-enhancement feature when your video app supports it. On iPhone, these options are in different places and do different jobs; they are not universal fixes for every app or phone.
First check what is making the audio hard to hear
Before changing sound settings, confirm that audio is playing through the intended speaker or headphones, that the headphones fit properly and are in good condition, and that the app’s volume is turned up. If speech remains difficult to follow, captions or subtitles may help; Apple lists captions among its hearing accessibility features.
Different problems call for different adjustments. A left-right imbalance is different from quiet speech, dialogue masked by sound effects, or music whose tone or volume feels off.

Adjust stereo balance or use mono audio on iPhone
On iPhone, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual. Apple’s audio accessibility settings guide describes two useful controls:

- Balance: Move the left-right balance control if one side is quieter or harder for you to hear.
- Mono Audio: Turn this on to send the same audio content to both sides instead of separate left and right channels. This can help when stereo content is difficult to follow, but it removes the distinction between the channels.
These are accessibility controls, not general-purpose dialogue enhancers. If the problem is that music or effects cover speech, balance or mono audio may not address it.
Make soft headphone audio easier to hear
For supported headphones, iPhone’s Headphone Accommodations can amplify soft sounds and adjust selected frequencies. Apple explains the feature in its Headphone Accommodations guide. Availability depends on the exact headphones, so check Apple’s compatibility information rather than assuming every model supports it.

- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations.
- Turn on the feature if it is available for your connected headphones.
- Preview the tone and amplification options and choose an adjustment that makes speech easier to follow without making the sound uncomfortably loud.
- Choose whether the adjustment applies to Phone, Media, or both, depending on where you need it.
Apple also documents this feature for supported AirPods. The setting changes the sound reaching compatible headphones; it does not improve every speaker or every audio source.
Reduce competing sound in supported Apple TV app videos
If dialogue is being masked by a soundtrack or effects, iPhone has a more targeted option for supported video content in the Apple TV app. First enable Add Voice Isolation in accessibility settings. Then, while watching supported content, open Audio and select Enhance Dialogue. Apple’s iPhone audio accessibility guide says that “During dialogue, voices are isolated and all other audio is substantially reduced.”

This is not a universal control for every video, streaming service, or app. Because it substantially reduces other audio during dialogue, it may also change the balance between voices and the rest of the soundtrack.

- EQ: Choose a preset to change the music’s tonal balance.
- Sound Check: Normalize playback volume so tracks play at a more consistent level.
EQ changes how different parts of the sound are emphasized; Sound Check adjusts perceived differences in track level. They solve different problems, and these Music settings are app-level controls rather than system-wide changes. Compare options at a comfortable listening volume.

Audio and accessibility settings vary by Android phone manufacturer, software version, headphones, and playback app. The available documentation here does not establish a reliable, precise settings path for Android, so menu names or instructions for one model should not be treated as universal. Check your phone maker’s support guidance and the audio app’s settings for options such as mono audio, left-right balance, sound enhancement, or captions.
