A desert cooler may cool poorly in a humid room because it works by adding water vapor to the air. When the incoming air is already humid, there is less room for evaporation to lower its temperature—and the cooler makes the room more humid as it runs. Check humidity and manage airflow, but don’t expect a direct evaporative cooler to behave like air conditioning: it does not remove moisture from the air.
Why a desert cooler loses effectiveness in humidity
A desert cooler is a direct evaporative cooler. Water evaporates into the air passing through the unit, lowering its dry-bulb temperature while raising its humidity. How much cooling is possible depends on the incoming air’s dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures. The more humid the incoming air, the less useful evaporative headroom is generally available.
ASHRAE’s 2023 handbook illustrates how strongly entering-air conditions can affect the result. In its examples, a cooler with 80% effectiveness supplied air at 19.8°C with entering air at 35°C dry-bulb and 16°C wet-bulb under Reno design conditions. Under Atlanta design conditions—34°C dry-bulb and 23.5°C wet-bulb—the same illustrative cooler supplied air at 25.6°C. What to check and adjust in the room
Measure humidity instead of guessing
Use an indoor humidity monitor or room hygrometer to observe conditions while the cooler is running. Note whether the room becomes persistently damp, rather than judging performance only by how cool the air feels near the unit. If humidity keeps rising or the room feels damp, reduce or stop direct evaporative cooling and address moisture before running it longer.

ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022 Addendum e specifies a 65% maximum relative humidity for covered HVAC zones whenever evaporative cooling equipment is operating, and calls for humidity sensing in zones served by direct evaporative equipment, subject to exceptions. Give air a way out, but consider outdoor humidity
Evaporative cooling needs air movement through the space, including a path for air to leave. However, opening windows or using outdoor air can make conditions worse when that air is very humid. ASHRAE cautions against ventilative cooling when outdoor air is too humid. Choose an outlet and operating approach based on the outdoor conditions, room layout, and cooler; there is no single window or exhaust-fan arrangement established as best for every home. Stop if moisture becomes a problem
In hot, humid climates, inadequate humidity control can contribute to mold and other moisture-related problems. If surfaces or belongings feel damp, or humidity remains high, do not keep running the cooler in an attempt to force more cooling. Ventilation is useful only when the incoming air and conditions support it; bringing in very humid outdoor air is not a reliable fix. ASHRAE consumer resources
When equipment designed for humid conditions makes more sense
If added moisture is the main limitation, the more relevant alternative is a different cooling process—not simply another setting on a direct cooler. Indirect evaporative cooling uses evaporation in a secondary airstream and a heat exchanger to cool the primary airstream without adding moisture to it. ASHRAE also identifies two-stage evaporative cooling as an approach that can extend the conditions under which comfort requirements can be met and deliver lower cool-air temperatures for the same design conditions.
