Most Shokz call problems are fixed by correcting the call input, moving the microphone into the right position, and removing dirt or moisture from its opening. Start with those free checks before changing apps, resetting the headset, or buying another model. On a computer, verify the microphone selected inside the calling app as well as the operating system. On OpenComm and OpenMeet, keep the boom close to your mouth; on other models, make sure nothing covers the built-in microphone.

Shokz headphones use an open-ear design, so you can hear surrounding sound while wearing them. That is useful for awareness but means neither the headphones nor their call noise reduction can make a windy street, workshop, or crowded room completely silent. The sequence below separates routing faults from physical microphone problems and gives model-specific recovery steps.

Start with a one-minute diagnosis

Use this order so you do not mistake an app setting for a defective microphone. Make one short recording after each change; the result tells you which branch to follow.

A clean, correctly routed microphone remains bad everywhere Possible hardware fault or persistent firmware state Use the exact model reset procedure, then contact support if it continues

1. Confirm mute and the correct call input

Check the call application’s microphone

First look at the microphone icon in the meeting or calling window. A system-wide mute, a meeting host mute, or a per-call mute can make a healthy headset appear broken. Speak while watching the application’s input meter. If the meter does not move, open the app’s audio settings and choose the Shokz headset as the microphone rather than the computer’s internal mic, a webcam, or a previously paired accessory.

Make a short test recording with the phone’s or computer’s built-in recording software. If that recording is clear but a particular calling app is not, the headset is probably working and the problem is app routing, permissions, or an in-call mute. If the recording is also silent or distorted, continue with the physical checks.

Use the computer’s Hands-Free input

Bluetooth computers commonly expose separate listening and calling profiles. A high-quality music output selection does not prove that the headset microphone is connected. In the operating system’s sound settings, select the Shokz device as the input and choose its Hands-Free call input mode when that option is shown. Then open the calling application’s own audio page and select the same microphone there. Some applications retain their previous device choice even after the system default changes, so both selections matter.

Close and reopen the call application after changing the device if its input meter remains inactive. If the headset works in a built-in recording program but not in one app, check that app’s microphone permission and its separate input selector rather than resetting the headset repeatedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phone versus computer checks

On a phone, confirm that the Shokz device is connected for calls, not merely listed as an available Bluetooth accessory. During a call, open the audio-route menu and select the headset if the phone has switched back to its handset or speaker. Then make a recording outside the calling app. On a computer, perform both the operating-system and in-app selections because either layer can override the other.

If the microphone works on the phone but not the computer, that pattern points toward the computer’s Bluetooth profile, app selection, or permission settings rather than a blocked microphone. If it fails on both devices, continue with positioning, cleaning, moisture, and the model-specific reset.

2. Put the microphone where your voice is strongest

OpenComm and OpenMeet boom microphones

Rotate the boom so its microphone sits near the corner of your mouth, not below your chin or alongside your cheek. Keep the opening facing you and leave a small gap rather than pressing it against your lips. A boom that has swung away during storage can make speech sound distant even when Bluetooth is working normally. Recheck its position if you change glasses, a mask, a hat, or any other clothing around your ears and face.

Speak at your normal volume after each adjustment. Do not shout to compensate for a boom that is too far away; that can make the call sound harsh while leaving the underlying pickup problem unresolved.

Other Shokz models with integrated microphones

Wear the headset in its intended position and check the microphone opening on the frame. Hair, a hood, a collar, helmet straps, or a hand resting on the headset can partly cover it. Remove the obstruction and repeat the same short recording. Do not assume that moving closer to the phone will fix a covered microphone; the obstruction is at the headset itself.

3. Clean the opening and remove moisture

Routine cleaning

Dust, skin oil, and lint can block a small microphone port. With the headset powered off, gently clean the opening with a dry cotton swab. Use light pressure and do not push fibers or debris into the hole. Avoid spraying cleaner, inserting a sharp object, or flooding the area with liquid. After cleaning, record a test clip before changing other settings.

If the problem started after sweat or rain

A sudden muffled sound after a workout, heavy rain, or shower exposure is consistent with moisture around the microphone. Wipe the headset with a dry, absorbent cloth and leave it in a well-ventilated place until it is fully dry. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, oven, or compressed air; concentrated heat or pressure can damage seals and components. Do not charge the headset while moisture may remain in or around its charging contacts.

OpenRun Pro 2 moisture procedure

For an OpenRun Pro 2 whose microphone became muffled, Shokz’s model guidance is to gently shake the headset at different angles, wipe the microphone with absorbent tissue or a dry cloth, and leave it ventilated for several hours. This is a moisture-removal procedure for that model, not a factory reset and not a guarantee that a damaged microphone will recover. Test only after the drying period.

4. Control the sound around you

Understand the open-ear trade-off

Open-ear listening intentionally leaves ambient sound audible. Unlike an in-ear design, it does not seal the ear canal, so nearby voices, traffic, fans, and wind can remain noticeable to you and can also reach the call microphone. This is a design characteristic, not automatically a fault.

Move before changing settings

Shokz advises moving to a quieter location when noise cancellation is less effective in an extremely noisy environment. Indoors, step away from a fan, air conditioner, loud keyboard, or speaker. Outdoors, use a wind-protected area, turn your body so the headset is sheltered from gusts, and avoid speaking beside moving traffic. Ask the other caller whether the background improved after each move; that feedback distinguishes environmental noise from a microphone defect.

Noise reduction has limits. It can reduce some steady or competing sounds, but no setting makes every outdoor, windy, or loud location silent. If calls are routinely taken in such places, schedule them from a quieter spot or use a call-focused setup with a boom microphone and the correct computer adapter.

Separate what you hear from what the other caller hears

Because the headset is open-ear, you may notice room sound even when the microphone is transmitting an acceptable voice signal. Ask the other caller for a specific report: is your speech quiet, distorted, or merely accompanied by background noise? A complaint about traffic or wind calls for environmental changes first. A complaint that every word is muffled points more strongly to blockage, moisture, positioning, or hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Reset only with your model’s instructions

After confirming routing, placement, cleanliness, dryness, and environment, a reset can clear a persistent noise-cancellation or pickup state. Reset sequences differ among Shokz products. Using a button combination copied from another model can fail or put the headset into an unintended mode, so locate the support instructions for the exact model name and suffix first.

OpenComm manual reset sequence

Shokz gives OpenComm a specific sequence:

  1. Power the headset off.
  2. Hold Volume+ for 5 to 7 seconds until pairing mode starts.
  3. Hold the multifunction button, Volume+, and Volume− together for 3 to 5 seconds, until you hear beeps or feel vibration.
  4. Power the headset off again.
  5. Turn it on, pair it with the phone or computer again, and make a recording and a test call.

This procedure is for the OpenComm instructions that specify it; do not apply it automatically to OpenRun, OpenRun Pro 2, OpenMeet, or another model. If the reset changes nothing, return to the input and physical checks rather than repeating it indefinitely.

6. Fix computer call routing in detail

Windows and other Bluetooth computers

Open the computer’s sound control, identify the paired Shokz device, and set it as the input. If the system lists a music or stereo output and a Hands-Free call profile, choose the Hands-Free profile for the microphone. In the meeting application, open its audio or device settings and select the Shokz microphone explicitly. Start a test call and watch the app’s input meter while speaking at normal volume.

If selecting Hands-Free makes music sound lower quality, that is expected for many Bluetooth implementations: the system has switched to a two-way call profile. Prioritize the profile that actually carries the microphone during the call. After the call, you can switch the output back to a music profile if your computer permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate app and system failures

Use the built-in recorder as a control test. Clear speech in the recorder but silence in the meeting app points to app selection or permissions. Silence in both points to headset position, blockage, moisture, pairing, or hardware. Test a second calling application only after confirming the first app’s microphone permission; otherwise you may carry the same routing error into the second test.

Model-specific considerations

OpenComm and OpenMeet

These models use an adjustable boom, so placement is the highest-value check. Keep the boom near your mouth and unobstructed, then verify the computer’s Hands-Free input if you use them with a desktop or laptop. OpenComm also has the manual reset sequence listed above; do not substitute a generic reset.

OpenRun

Shokz describes OpenRun as using Bluetooth 5.1 and being compatible with iPhone, Android, Bluetooth-enabled Windows PCs, and Bluetooth-enabled Mac computers. Compatibility means the headset can connect; it does not guarantee that every calling app or operating-system configuration will route its microphone correctly. Check the app input and system input independently.

OpenRun Pro 2

If its microphone became muffled after sweat or rain, follow the shaking, wiping, and several-hours ventilation procedure rather than treating the symptom as a pairing problem. If sound remains muffled after it is completely dry and the opening is clean, continue with the exact model’s reset and support instructions.

OpenComm2 UC 2025 Upgrade

Shokz’s September 18, 2026 comparison and support material describes the OpenComm2 UC 2025 Upgrade as including a Loop120 wireless adapter and an improved noise-cancelling boom microphone, with DSP and cVc processing described on its product information. Those are manufacturer feature descriptions, not an independent result proving it outperforms every other headset. Compare an upgrade on practical axes: boom microphone versus an integrated mic, direct Bluetooth versus an adapter workflow, phone versus computer calls, the noise level where you work, and whether your current fault is intermittent or persistent. An adapter can simplify computer call routing, but it does not correct a muted app or a blocked microphone on an otherwise functional headset.

An upgrade is relevant when your work depends on frequent computer calls, you need a boom microphone, or an adapter-based workflow is more reliable for your computer. It is not a prerequisite for fixing a muted app, wrong input, covered microphone, dirt, or moisture problem, and it cannot repair a defective existing headset.

When the problem is probably hardware

Escalate after you have completed all of the following without improvement:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The call application and the operating system both use the Shokz microphone.
  • A built-in recording is also silent, very faint, or distorted.
  • The boom or integrated microphone is correctly positioned and unobstructed.
  • The opening has been cleaned gently and the headset has dried fully.
  • You have tested in a reasonably quiet location.
  • You used the reset procedure written for the exact model.

Test with a second device if one is available, but keep the test controlled: use the same quiet room and a fresh recording. Failure across two devices is stronger evidence of a headset fault than failure in one meeting app. Note whether the symptom is constant or appears only after movement, charging, exercise, or exposure to rain.

At that point, contact Shokz support for diagnosis and warranty review. Shokz states that headphones bought from its official website and authorized retailers have a two-year manufacturer-defect warranty. Warranty terms, regional eligibility, exclusions, and proof-of-purchase requirements can change, so confirm the current rules for your country and keep your receipt, order record, model name, and serial information available. Describe when the symptom began, whether it followed moisture exposure, which apps and devices you tested, and whether the built-in recording was affected.

A practical prevention checklist

  • Before an important call, confirm the app’s selected microphone and make a 10-second recording.
  • Keep the OpenComm or OpenMeet boom near the mouth and clear of masks, hair, and clothing.
  • Store the headset dry and wipe sweat from the frame after exercise.
  • Do not charge a wet headset or force debris into a microphone opening.
  • Use a quieter, wind-protected location when speech intelligibility matters more than environmental awareness.
  • Keep the exact model’s reset instructions available; button sequences are not universal.

Frequently asked questions

Why can people not hear me on my Shokz headphones?

Check mute first, then choose the Shokz microphone in both the operating system and the calling app. Use the built-in recorder. If it is silent there too, inspect microphone placement, obstructions, dirt, and moisture.

How do I make a Shokz microphone clearer?

Place an OpenComm or OpenMeet boom near the corner of your mouth, uncover the microphone on other models, clean the opening gently with a dry cotton swab, and test in a quieter location. Do not shout to compensate for poor placement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Shokz microphone sound muffled?

Sweat or rain can leave moisture around the opening, while lint or dirt can block it. Wipe and ventilate the headset; for OpenRun Pro 2, gently shake it at different angles, wipe the microphone, and leave it ventilated for several hours.

How do I reduce background noise on a Shokz call?

Move away from fans, traffic, keyboards, speakers, and wind. Open-ear listening deliberately leaves outside sound audible, and noise cancellation cannot make every loud environment silent.

Should I buy OpenComm2 UC 2025 Upgrade to fix a bad microphone?

Not as a first step. Diagnose routing, position, cleanliness, moisture, and the exact model reset first. The OpenComm2 UC 2025 Upgrade is an optional call-focused choice with a boom mic and Loop120 adapter; verify the regional model and included components before buying.

What if my Shokz microphone still fails after all these checks?

Contact Shokz support and request warranty review. Keep proof of purchase and provide the model, devices and apps tested, moisture history, recording results, and the reset procedure used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable improvement is usually a correct input selection followed by correct microphone placement. Cleaning and complete drying address the common muffled-voice cases, while quieter surroundings address noise that open-ear listening cannot eliminate. Reset only after those checks, and seek support when a correctly routed, clean, dry headset still fails in recordings and calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can people not hear me on my Shokz headphones?

Check call and system mute, select the Shokz microphone in the calling app and operating system, then test with the built-in recorder. If recording is also silent, check placement, blockage, dirt, and moisture.

Why does my Shokz microphone sound muffled?

A dirty or damp microphone opening is common after exercise or rain. Clean gently, follow the model-specific drying instructions, and retest only when the headset is fully dry.

How do I reduce background noise on calls?

Move away from fans, traffic, keyboards, speakers, and wind. Shokz open-ear headphones preserve ambient awareness, so noise reduction has limits in very loud environments.

Do all Shokz models use the same reset sequence?

No. Reset procedures vary by model. Use the exact product instructions; the Volume+ and three-button sequence listed here is specifically for OpenComm.

When should I contact Shokz?

Escalate when the microphone remains bad in built-in recordings and calls after correct routing, unobstructed placement, cleaning, complete drying, a quiet-location test, and the exact model reset. Ask about current regional warranty terms.

The Bottom Line

Fix Shokz call quality in this order: unmute and select the correct Hands-Free input, position or uncover the microphone, clean and dry it, move to a quieter location, then use only the reset procedure for your exact model. If recordings and calls still fail across devices, contact Shokz support and check current warranty eligibility.
